  • Developed and published by Broderbund in 1993
    The 1993 sequel to Jordan Mechner's masterpiece should have been a triumph. More levels, varied locations, not to mention impressive production values and scripting for a 1993 DOS title should have resulted in a fantastic experience.
    Unfortunately, thanks to a host of poor design decisions and technical issues, my experience with the game was total opposite.
    Whereas most of the levels in the first game could be completed without prior knowledge (albeit with careful exploration), the sequel features more elaborate traps that sucker the player into unwinnable situations. Gates often lock you inside inescapable prisons, and shattering a loose platform at the wrong time leaves the level unbeatable.
    This isn't so bad in itself; much of the challenge is learning and overcoming these particular obstacles, but what I did find so objectionable was the stilted animation system and unresponsive controls. Combat is a complete and total nightmare, thanks largely to the game ignoring repeated key stabs to initiate parries and lunges. Earlier enemies you face are far less prone to counterattacking, but the Birdmen in the temple levels are extremely tough, often forcing you to face multiple opponents at the same time.
    Having twenty minutes of painstaking progress wiped out by the janky controls is something you'll need to get used to. The grid-based movement system doesn't always detect when the player initiates a running jump correctly, which results in the prince plunging to his doom on a regular basis.
    It's interesting to note that three versions of the DOS release exist, each with their own host of bugs. The initial release (abbr. to IR) is an almost-complete version of the game that never reached store shelves, but was leaked to FTP and bulletin boards ahead of the official launch. It misses certain sound effects (e.g. prince's footsteps), and buggy AI that results in guards happily throwing themselves off cliffs or wandering into traps to get to the player. It still persists online to download, and has been the focus of other longplays ( • PC Longplay [702] Prin... ).
    Version 1.0 (the version used in my recording) fixes the guard intelligence problems, adds the missing audio effects, and lacks the graphical issues found in the later 1.1 release. However, it features a bug that prevents the cutscenes from playing until you trigger a restart of the game (ALT + R).
    Version 1.1 was included with the Prince of Persia Collector Edition CD, released in 1998/1999. This fixed a couple of bugs found in 1.0, but added a glitch to the exit level animation, with the prince walking through the back wall, rather than the door.

      Is not because of the version but the Hardware, the Roland MT-32 had amazing sound even for today's standards, but overly expensive and very few games were even optimized for it. Resulting on that you would pay 600$ on a sound device that in most games just sounds like a Sound Blaster-16, but for a selected few you had 32-bit crystal clear quality.

    Prince of Persia 2 and Flashback were great games and sequels but like you said not revolutionary as the originals. They didn't blow my mind away like their predecessors but were fun to play. 1:06:41 - Only very few know that the sword can be picked up. But for that you have to approach it from the direction of the handle . In the first attempt when we approach the sword it raises and you change the direction the blade is pointing to
    . Then you again go back to same route (if had not broken a particular tile) but this time the sword is pointing the other direction (as you crossed it already ) so you pick it by the handle …. but you lose it anyway after you die to steal the flame ..,

    Thank you so much for this video. I never knew there were three versions of the game. This was and still is a masterpiece to me. I remember I finished it without help or looking online, I think I didn’t have internet at the time I was in high school.
    The final part I was so frustrated and started playing with the keyboard and walla the prince left his body. This was bonkers how would anyone know?

    Is this the right aspect ratio? I have heard that the game was meant to be played on a 4:3 monitor, and that therefore the native 1:1 pixel output (which would have a 16:10 aspect ratio if left as-is) should be rescaled by 5:6 to look correct. This is what I did for my own playthrough. Is that not right?

    • @oppie47
      @oppie47 Před měsícem

      Your upload is correct. The CRT monitors in the 90’s were 4:3 perspective. The 320x200 screen resolution used in old games at the time had tall rectangular pixels.

      It is! It's not just a matter of unzip and play, but it is possible. You have to install an MT-32 emulator like Munt, download an MT-32 rom to plug into Munt, then run the setup of the game in Dosbox to use the MT-32. Munt has to be running while the game is playing of course.
      There was one page that explained those steps in detail, but I can't find it anymore.

    • @Bobaklives
      @Bobaklives Před rokem +7

      The ending was a cliffhanger they never completed. Game designed Jordan Mechner explained it in 2013: "Ah, the Old Witch. In the final shot, after the prince and princess have defeated Jaffar and are flying off on a magic horse to live happily ever after, we pull back to reveal they're being watched in a crystal ball by a sinister old hag. Tattooed on her forehead is a serpent-S symbol. Observant players may recognize that symbol from earlier in the game, as graffiti scrawled on the walls of the ruined city, presumably by the marauding army that sacked it. That's the peril of cliffhanger endings: I wrote PoP2 thinking there was going to be a PoP3… but then there wasn't. (PoP3D doesn't count.) In that never-written third game, the Old Witch would have been the primary antagonist. She's the arch-villainess who gave Jaffar his powers, the one behind the slaughter of the prince's parents and sacking of his home city, and whom he is destined to vanquish one day. The serpent-S is the symbol of the evil god she serves. (Apologies to Tolkien, Wagner, Lucas, etc. It was the nineties.)"

      Prince 🤴 Of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame is an action 🎬 - adventure platformer game 🎮 released ♥ by Broderbund in 1993. It is the sequel to "Prince of Persia".
      Story: "In ancient Persia...there lived a Sultan who had an only daughter...whose beauty 😍 was like moonrise in a clear heaven. Now it happened that the Sultan left his kingdom...to fight 😤 in a foreign 🤔 land. In his 👋 absence, the Princess 👸 fell in love 😍 with a young boy traveller...who climbed the palace wall to see her. This did not please the Sultan's Grand Vizier Jaffar...who meant to marry the Princess 👸 himself. Seizing power, Jaffar had his rival thrown into the dungeons...but the young man 👨 escaped and struck down the evil 😈 magician 🎩. When he learned of his Vizier's treachery...the grateful 🙏 Sultan offered riches...but the stranger requested just one reward. And so the young lovers were wed and they lived happily...well, for eleven days."
      Good Ending "The Princess of the Awaken"
      With the sorcerer's death 💀, his spell was shattered. The Princess 👸 looked upon ✨ the Prince 🤴...and saw once again the man 👨 she loved ❤. This time the Prince 🤴 took no chances. He ordered Jaffar's ashes scattered to the winds. The people rejoiced...and the Prince 🤴 and Princess 👸 dwelt together ❤ in joy and serenity...and lived happily ever after.

      Yeah I can definitely see why some would prefer the DOS version. The enemies though. The floating heads look so bad on DOS compared to Mac. :D

      @@AL82RetrogamingLongplays The PC-98 and FM Towns versions have the same look as the IBM PC DOS version, if you're curious.

      The Mac version looks like upscaled DOS graphics in too many places for my liking. Also, I find there to be something kind of weird and off about the Mac color palette, like they couldn’t use all 256 colors due to the Mac interface.

    Thanks for the video! Great game.
    I use to play it on www.retrogames.cz. It seems to be version 1.1. The frustrating part is the fight against several birdmen at the same time. In this video you fight one after another. They wait their turn. But in that version 1.1 they don't. You find yourself being hit by two or three of them simultaneously. Impossible to win, at least so far ...
