Madonna's performance of " Sooner or Later" at the Oscars is simply iconic. The best performance ever at the Oscars. You should react to it as she elevates the song into a complete show per se. That song won an Oscar that night.

This is a must see performance. Truly one of best performances and certainly one of the best if the best live vocal performance. She owned that Oscars show and night, along with her little known date for the night, so guy called Michael Jackson?!?...not not me either! Haha 😂 It's an overused phrase these days but her whole performance from the entrance to the exit from the stage was ICONIC! 🏅🏅💪💪🥰🥰 Much love and thanks for this deep dive, you are one of the only reviewers that get her actual musical talent as a song writer and producer. Most people and critics get distracted by the images/videos and the controversy and miss the real moments of genius and sometimes tongue in cheek humour, i.e. Hanky Panky, I'm going bananas, cry baby. It was just an album made to have some fun and also she loves big band music from listening to what her Father was playing around the house. It's not a serious album. But then beautiful moments like Something to remember about the death of her teenage dance teacher who snuck her into gay clubs and she found her spiritual home! Haha 😂. Also what can you loose with Mandy Patinkin, just beautiful and heart breaking. Then the fun of convincing Warren Beatty to record a duet. Light hearted fun bit of a vanity project. I don't count it as a real M album proper. Best of love and thanks again for actually appreciating that she is a talented musician. ❤️💯👍👍👏👏🙌🙌✌️✌️@OTDEMusic

Initially- there wasn’t really a game plan by Warner Brothers to do an entire album other than the basic soundtrack to the film. “Vogue” changed all that. “Vogue” was written as a B-side for “Keep It Together”. Thankfully- WB knew it was a monster, and wouldn’t release it until they could couple it with an album. “I’m Breathless”- really a concept Madonna album with three songs from Dick Tracy- was born. The cheekiness of this album was delightful. And- Madonna vocally was in top form.

Madonna’s character Breathless Mahoney, in Dick Tracy, was one of the most perfect characters she could ever play. I’ve always said, the growth from her first album to this, deserved a Grammy. The soundtrack I'm Breathless is for the motion picture Dick Tracy. Even though the movie was deemed a disappointment it did gross $100 million dollars back in 1990. The last song may feel out of place is because it was not intended to ever be released. Vogue was actually going to be the B side single for Like A Prayer however, her business associates convinced her the song was too good to not be released. Thankfully she listened to her business associates and released the song as a single and put it as the last track for the soundtrack to Dick Tracy. The song went to become her 8th number one record ( a record at the time), her best selling single, and introduced voguing to the mainstream along with a groundbreaking music video. If you do anything else please watch the music video for Vogue. It captures everything that is Madonna and know you will not be disappointed.

Disney did lose money, but it did do pretty well and I think they probably made their money back in the long-term. It was Disney's biggest opening weekend at the time, got decent reviews, and was nominated for a few Oscars (and won for Best Song). So I would say it did moderately well.

I love this album - most of the songs aren't actually in the movie, just inspired by the characters, which is probably why you picked up on the different "voices." The songs you thought sounded like musical theater were indeed written Stephen Sondheim, a very famous Broadway composer. "Vogue" was absolutely tacked on, but I think it works. Don't sleep on "Justify My Love" and "Rescue Me" (from her greatest hits album) before moving on to her next studio album. First time on your channel and think it’s so great you’re doing this deep dive into her entire catalogue. This is a great album where she took her character from the Dick Tracy movie and made an entire album out of it. Funny how you were describing detective movies and basically just described Dick Tracy lol

This album was inspired by the film, "Dick Tracy" that Madonna had a supporting role in. So, you nailed it as far as this reminding you of a detective type story, film noir, where a woman in a tight dress (Madonna) drops a file on a detective's desk to solve a crime that she secretly committed. I thought this was an interesting album and also showed Madonna's range not just in vocals, but the different styles of music she experiments with. She also wrote 6 of the tracks off the album. "Vogue" was a massive huge hit. It's considered one of Madonna's classics. Although it did seem out of place a bit on this album and should've been added to the "Like a Prayer" album since there was certainly space for more hits on that one and it was written and recorded during that time. It was originally supposed to be a B-Side to the "Keep it Together" single from that album anyway. Madonna wrote the lyrics and recorded the song in under three weeks. Released it and it went to #1 immediately. Check out the "Blonde Ambition Tour" which supports many of Madonna's hits pre-1990.

Vogue was produced by Shep Pettibone, at that perood of time he used the Bazooka drums, and this type of composition you can hear it on the Janet Jackson’s remix of Miss You Much (Shep’s House Dub)

This album is just pure fun! And I can't get over how Vogue originally was a B-side before it got pushed up because the executives insisted it was a hit. Blonde Ambition tour had so many of these songs and it was so great.

In regards to your "its the 1990s" comment, in reference to Cry Baby,, it's actually set in the 30s gangster noir world, so fits that time period's moral ideas, though released in 1990.

The biggest traversty of this album was the fact that the record company abandoned "Now I'm Following You" as the next single after Hanky Panky. It's a real shame because it's such an innovative song and would probably have been a surefire hit at the time. They even got so far as commissioning promos and remixes before they pulled the pin.

  • @zanyzander

That's Mandy Patankin, Broadway and TV star singing on What Can You Lose. It's Warren Beatty, movie star and non -singer, attempting to sing on Now I'm Following You. Reminds me of Pierce Brosnan trying to sing in Mamma Mia film. I remember reading something about autotune being created for Warren Beatty's bad singing, or that it was the first time it was publicly acknowledged that autotune existed and was used.

This wasn’t a soundtrack, it was inspired by the movie, which had it’s own actual soundtrack. A couple of songs we’re in the movie and in fact, the song “Sooner Or Later” won the Oscar that year. The movie for this ,is the Live Action “Dick Tracy”, which Madonna played a lounge singer named Breathless Mahoney. Such and underrated album and sadly got no awards, it was due.

The last track Vogue was originally planned for her B-side to her upcoming single Keep It Together in early 1990. But when her record label executives heard it they knew it was going to be a hit. So Madonna put this song on this album because it was next album or soundtrack release after Like A Prayer and because of the rap in towards the end of the song she lists the famous actors and actresses with the exception of Joe DiMaggio who was a well known baseball player who was once married to Marilyn Monroe that were considered the Golden Age of Hollywood from the 30s, 40s and 50s. And because Dick Tracy was set in the 30s with gangsters, moll like Breathless Mahoney and with a film noir feeling she felt that the song was a good way to add to it and close it out. Plus even though Vogueing and the stars that she raps in the song are from older times the song itself production wise and the genre it is in takes her back to her dance music roots.
Madonna was introduced to Vogueing when her long time friend Debi Mazar, who Madonna met in 82 at the Danceteria night club where Madonna made her break through the DJ Mark Kamins, told her about it and took her to see Jose Gutierrez and Luis Camacho vogue at the Sound Factory night club in NYC. Madonna was so impressed with their dancing that she asked them to audition for her upcoming Blond Ambition Tour and they appeared in her Vogue music video and Blond Ambition Tour and Truth or Dare documentary which is the behind the scenes of the Blond Ambition Tour.
I can't wait for you to react to the Vogue music video and the Blond Ambition Tour.

This is one of my most solid Madonna record. I think it's in my top 5 fave of hers. My I'm Breathless LP is a go-to when I can't decide which to spin. It's got a lot of Stephen Sondheim numbers, an OST to the 30's America detective 90s movie Dick Tracy based on the hit comic book of the same title. Vogue was an instant classic and iconic. YOU HAVE TO react to react to her MTV VMA performance of Vogue. My fave next to this track is More. Did I already say you have to react to Vogue fr the MTV VMAs?
Oh, and by the way, Mandy Patinkin sang in What Can You Lose.

I’m Breathless was one of three soundtracks released for the film Dick Tracy: Madonna’s great concept album, from the perspective of her character, also a 2nd soundtrack of songs by other artists recorded for the movie, and finally the movie’s film score written by Danny Elfman. Not many movies get 3 albums, but this was a big movie in 1990, and the studio’s marketing machine (Touchstone Pictures, an imprint of Disney) was working at full throttle on this one.
