    This is something a lot of younger people now don't appreciate about Madonna, she was taking all of this stuff on back when nobody else in pop music was doing it. Not just this but even more so support for the gay community, AIDS, women owning their sexuality, the hypocrisy of religion etc she was in peoples faces about it back when it wasn't the "cool" thing or accepted. I don't say that to diminish what others have done but when I hear young gay guys talk about Lady Gaga like she is so brave and "the first one" I just think to myself "you have no idea" lol Madonna was the only pop star who supported the gay community proudly back in the 1980's and 1990's, Janet Jackson never mentioned us, Mariah Carey never mentioned us it was only Madonna. Getting back to race issues she brought that up a lot, her tours always had a very diverse group of performers and she has always celebrated other cultures. I know she can be an oddball sometimes but I'll always appreciate her for helping me to feel comfortable with myself as a very closeted gay kid in high school in the late 80's and early 90's.

      Madonna did it first and she did it better. Others have literally used her career as a blueprint for their own, and claimed they were original. Some may get fooled by that, but not the ones who were alive to remember.

I'm not diminishing M's contributions. I'm a fan of both & they both have made contributions in the gay community in their own way. @German Morawski yes I do. Many people think it's religious, when the Vatican is fully political. Each pope has deceived the whole entire world over the years killing Catholicism. Little tip mr, the Vatican isn't Catholic or Christian. It's a front. They are Luciferian and the proof is so easy, you can youtube it. Plus the Vatican is the home of kidnapping kids to molest and rape. Nothing about the Vatican is good. They are all evil behind closed doors, the Vatican declared Lucifer as God and many people don't know that. But so many have woke up. The Vatican holds a lot of power, the Jesuits; but they are evil and it's a Babylonian bloodline doing what they can to never die. Pope Francis, Benadict, and ones prior, the vatican was made to actually supress Christian values. They are parasites. and people who are blind and go there are so deceived. The people of the Vatican can rot in hell, actually they will. So that's why Madonna did not care.

    She is a living legend and we're lucky she still alive. People will be studying Madonna for years. Your videos react to Madonna 30 years after she wrote most of these songs.
    I can imagine very easily that a 100 years from now someone will be reacting once again to madonna.
    I've touched on her being a champion for ageism and sexism and other very important things. But have we talked about the power Madonna has. She is smart she is in control of her own life and her own career. And that's from the beginning. She owns her own companies she owns her own brand she writes her own songs she plays instruments. She is a powerhouse.She's in the Guinness book of world records. She has changed music dramatically. She has showed the world that music videos is A tool for change.

      She's a Woman, She's Old, She's Crazy, She has botox, She can't sing, She doesn't play the instruments....The haters will always find anything to dismiss her instead of focus on the genius she is and that's because they don't feel comfortable with anyone who still stands exactly because she was the first woman to be different from others in the music industry by free expressing her points of views and personality without caring for approval of others, the first to stay "old" and still want to work and create art, that's why she is always paying a price, because she is PIONEER, INOVATIVE, UNIQUE, FIGHT LABELS, PUSH BUTTONS. For a man to be like that was always normal on the music industry but she is a woman, she should be quiet on her place and not to be interventive and express her opinions and above all never, never try to be on a place that was always and only reserved for men and objectifying men like they did objectifying woman on their music videos since then, how dare you Madonna? Men always liked to be on command and that's why they are afraid of her...That's the reason why she is a LIVING LEGEND, A MYTH, AN ICON, THE ONLY LIVING SUPERSTAR WHICH STILL REMAINS, and was named the QUEEN (of pop). Come on guys give her a break and let her continue her artistic and genius career while she is still alive, one day when she won't be with us people will notice her importance in History, but I guess it is always like that, you must lost someone important to know his real VALUE. That's why I'm always thinking how fortunate we are to have the privilege every single day to have her still among with us while she is ALIVE AND KICKING. For me Madonna is the definition of WOMAN and will always be until I die. Sometimes I think as a Madonna huge fan she really don't have the best voice in the world comparing with other singers nor is the best dancer nor is the best this or the best that and for me this is even more the reason why she is my favourite artist of all time, because with all this "limitations" she remains above other great artists on a timeline because she has PERSONALITY, CHARISMA, STYLE, INTELEGENCY and applies that on her artistic path and surpasses herself constantly, from others we can only say: "ok great voice this artist have, this singer is so pretty and sexy,..." we only appreciate them by their technical and physical skills, but with Madonna is different we appreciate her by some of this same skills but as WHOLE, as a PERSONALITY. Everytime she bring us a new record or concert she impregnate her unique strong sincere personality on it remaining coherent with her beliefs and convictions and that's why I think people still follow and respect her. She's BEATIFUL on her own way and I am not only speaking physically which she was of course more when she was younger but she is even more beautiful as time goes by because beauty is not only what you see outside but what you perception the others give you from inside and on this Madonna is the most beatiful person in the world and History because she is such a beatiful soul and human being inside. For any reason singers like Whitney, Mariah, Janet, Britney, Beyonce, Rihanna that stood for her great voices or style/beauty comparing to Madonna never accomplished what Madonna is and done (and I'm not saying I don't like those artists) because she has that "It" factor, a "je ne sais quoi", a MAGIC MYSTERY that no one can explain but that's why she is a MYTHICAL (LIVING) LEGEND in HISTORY. Many things have been said about this woman in the past and will always continue in the present and future because we want to explain and guess who is this person and woman/human being which is always defying us. She is LOVED and HATED, but the geniuses and myths were always like that, loved for some and hated by others, the true ARTISTS AND GENIUSES were always like that originating debate because they were DIFFERENT. Today to dismiss Madonna is kind of trendy but Madonna is ETERNAL like all LEGENDS are so as time goes by and as fashions move on she will stay UNTOUCHABLE and IMMORTAL as one of the most SINGULAR human beings that come to this planet and universe. Madonna is a mix of unique physical and personal beauty that combined together made the person who she is until today: A GODDESS among GODS. THANK YOU Madonna for CHANGING MY LIFE.

And I have to disagree with everyone saying she doesn't have a great voice. She puts so much passion in her music that is comes out beautifully. I've hear remixes of her songs by other artists and they don't sound nearly as good. Of course, not every song is amazing, but when you think of songs like, Frozen, Rain, Crazy for You, Live to Tell, This used to be my Playground, and the Evita songs - they are just beautiful. You can't group her in the same category as a Brittney Spears or JLo, they don't even come close to her musical talent. Yes, Mariah and Whitney are amazing and have amazing voices; I agree. Now we all can see for our own eyes how (some) cops really treat black people because everyone's got a phone and can record it... the cops can't hide this shit anymore. That M knew about this and was brave enough to shine a light on these issues in 1989, 30 years before the BLM movement, is nothing short of heroic. I am sure now some people could read the video as a 'white saviour' story but considering how much risk she took for being a strong ally to the black community (along with women, the queer community, etc.) I think we have to give her mad props.

Madonna has always been ahead of her time. Even back in the day, we didn't realize how epic this video was. It's one of my favorite pieces of art now. Great reaction!

    I was 9 years old when I first watched this video and I was completely blown away. The thing that surprised me the most was that Madonna, whom I knew as the perfect blond, was the same person as this one. There was no music channel in my country. There was only a program on the national channel that broadcast 5-6 foreign music videos a week. Every time I watched that show, I prayed that this clip would air again. But I couldn't watch it again. Instead, every time a different Madonna video was aired. I was always shocked to see Madonna with a different identity every time. The thing that impressed me the most about Madonna was that she was the only person I had ever witnessed with the freedom to change herself completely and become a better version of herself every time.

    My father had lit some of Madonna's shows in the 80's, including her Solid Gold performance of Holiday when she first burst onto the scene. He also lit Madonna's Pepsi Commercial in 1989 when I was 16. The commercial was shot at a French school in L.A. One of my sisters was in the commercial dancing with the other school girls with Madonna walking down the hall in the school. The commercial came out featuring the Like a Prayer song. The next day the Like a Prayer video came out and it caused a huge uproar. It was all over the news. People slamming it as offensive. Pepsi pulled the commercial due to threats of boycotts as a result. People were still just as simple minded then as they are now.
    Madonna kept the $5 million pay day for that commercial and used it to create one of her most popular music videos for Express Yourself. Ironically, the Like a Prayer song and video are now hailed as well-loved classics. But it is interesting that decades later not much has changed. Racism is still a hot topic and people are still easily offended. You'd think they could evolve as quicker as Madonna has over the decades.
    The boycotts and threats and media storm the Like a Prayer video caused didn't stop the song and album from hitting #1. haha

  • @lkpippins
    @lkpippins Před 3 lety

    This was I think her 2nd or 3rd album. Anyway the video was shot be Mary Lambert who directed another on of her videos back in the 90''s. If you look at the Wikipedia page for the song you will be amazed. Not only was it the first song released from the album Like a Prayer this song for Madonna was worked on very hard by herself an Patrick Leonard. The music in her eyes had to really reflect what her vision of the song. Then the Choir was actually the Andre Crouch Choir, and she had to share the lyrics with him before he would sign on to have the songs chorus to sing as the choir. It was noted on the Wikipedia site that she had done all that she could to make this song as good as it could get. I mean she collaborated with the best in the industry. It release as #2 the first week on the charts but the following week it hit #1 later the Bon Jovi's Song "I'll be there for you " to the number one spot. The lyrics have been analyzed, taught in colleges and so much speculation about the meaning of the lyrics have also been discussed. The in Week 2 on the charts other artist were already sampling the lyrics. Like a Pray has been named or placed in the category of songs that changed or affected the world. She got a Pepsi commercial out of it for 5 million dollars. However, when it was released the catholic church threat to boycott Pepsi so the pulled the deal but Madonna was keep her 5 Million dollars. There is a pretty good version of the song and Vogue on the TV show Glee. Madonna had no problems with Ryan Murphy using the songs he chose because she opened her catalog to him. Because the generation had never heard the song before it had a short resurgence. It renter the charts top 400 songs or album I can't remember. The black actor's name is Leon and he acted in the role of the black man falsely arrested. Also he acted as the saint for people of color. I think also the scene of them kissing was speculation the she was kissing the saint but anyone who watched the video fully and not narrow mindedly would've not come to that conclusion. The video turned out to be a play which I thought was cool. The imagery just had a lot of symbolism and the narrow minded just can't perceive due to the stiff rod of them trying to control the masses. Anyway, I don't want pontificate here, I just really like the song and video till this day. BTW, I think the reason it was made like a play is because she had done a play in NY called "Speed the Plow" with other stars in the cast. But , like I said she worked hard on this song with the industry's best and she wanted to be as best as it could be before it was released.

I love this video and it is still true today sadly. Feels like it could have been just made and that's telling us just How brave Madonna was to do it back in those times. Her hands showing the crucifixion wounds I remember was symbolic of the decision she would have to make to go to the police and tell them what really happened because the Gang That assaulted the woman that had seen her face and could come for her.
