    Samsung better make a 4 TB version of this drive (and maybe even an 8 TB version).

    • @Frozoken
      @Frozoken Před 6 měsíci +6

      Praying on the 8tb. We need an affordable 8tb nvme drive. Currently all the 8tb drives are over triple the price of flagship 4tb drives while also being moderately worse performance, ik part of the lower performance is from issues with scaling to 8tb but no, most of the 8tb nvme drives are straight up older by a couple years which is more reason for them to be priced lower than 3x the current flagship 4tb drives yet they aren't.

    • @MitchellTheMitch
      @MitchellTheMitch Před 6 měsíci

      @Frozoken Well maybe because it's hard to fit 8tb of FAST storage in such a small form factor. It'll get cheaper as the years go on, but you need to under that were fitting 8 Terabytes of storage with a speed of 7,000+ Megabytes Per Second, in something as small as a stick of gum. Yes we can do it, but it's an expensive process to do so.

    • @Slav4o911
      @Slav4o911 Před 6 měsíci

      No it does not, it takes a full 4x slot and uses only 2 lines from it. That does not mean you can use more cards, the mainboard will automatically dedicate 4x lines to a 4x slot, even if you use only 2x lines on it. There are of course better mainboards where you can do manual bifurcation and use a x16 slot like 4x4x4x4x . If the mainboard does not have that manual bifurcation and you put an 4x card in a x16 slot it will use only 4x lines, if you put an adapter with 4 M.2 SSDs and your mainboard doesn't have manual bifurcation, only one of the SSDs will show up. So in practice it doesn't matter that his particular Samsung "gives up" two lines. You can just put a regular faster PCIe 4.0 SSD in that PCI 5.0 slot and it'll work with PCI 4.0 4x speed... no need to give up 2 lines for an unknown reason. These PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots always have dedicated 4 lines.

    • @Frozoken
      @Frozoken Před 6 měsíci +2

      @@JayRello1buddy it's literally worse in every way than a 990 pro, gen 5 is not enough reason for it to be priced the same or above it. Especially when at a queue depth of 1 sequentially which is all you'll actually use for a big write, 2 lanes of gen 4 on the 990 pro will be very close if not the same throughput at the 990 evo. If you literally keep 90% of the evos advertised sequential write with 1 queue than ur at 3.8GB/s which can be achieved with 2 lanes of gen 4. @willy7968 Not quite the fastest gen 4 but very close nonetheless especially for only upper mid range price. It has some weird performance issues when you run out of slc cache and the 990 pro beats it in low queue depth random reads (what matters for real world performance unlike sequential speeds) but regardless it's actually 2nd in that metric which is very impressive imo for a non flagship drive and at least the size of said SLC cache is about double the 990 pro so ur less likely to run out in the first place. I just installed a 2TB Samsung 990 EVO into my laptop computer, and it's an excellent Gen4 SSD for a laptop. It tends to run a bit hot under load, so I added a flat copper heatsink that is held on by rubber bands and fits inside the laptop. That keeps it below 60 C even with a large sequential write. Sequential read/write is a bit slow but overall performance is really snappy, just as the PCMark 10 benchmark shows. So my experience using the 990 EVO agrees very well with everything your report says.

    It gets even better than that. It's also backwards compatible with Gen 3. PCIe specifications mandate that PCIe devices can fallback to previous generations of PCIe. You might not have compatibility with PCIe 1.0, but that would be because no one ever bothered to create NVME drivers for PCIe 1.0, not because of PCIe incompatability, but a lack of software/firmware for NVME support on PCIe 1.0 hardware.

      Btw most tech reviewer r not ur typical gamers, they really don't have enough pcie lanes if they use consumer plaform. a x16 x8 ssd raid expansion card already take away 16/8 lanes, gpu take away another 16 lanes.
      if u need more hard drives, LSI card take another 8 lanes.
      If u do render where u want to use multiple gpu, u also used more lanes. And capture card also take away more lanes.
      If u r doing some more serious work on ur pc that also requires a lot of storage u will know that most consumer motherboard/platform lacks sufficient pcie lanes
      U r talking about a tech reviewer that gear a lot toward "creator", which usually complains about lack of pcie lanes from their workflow

      @@789know Yes but giving up 2 lines will not magically give you 2 lines. That's like if your GPU is in a x16 slot and uses only x8 lines, the other x8 lines do not become "magically available". Also why will you give up your presumably valuable Gen 5.0 slot to that abomination?! If you just need a lot of space you hook up a 18TB HDD, if you need many SSDs you can put them where there are slots. Giving up 2 of your most valuable lines will not make them magically show up somewhere else. If you don't need Gen 5.0 SSD you can put fast gen 4.0 SSD in the same slot. If you need a lot of flexibility you get a board with lots of slots and manual bifurcation support. That SSD will give up 2 lines which in practice will not show up anywhere, the mainboard will still dedicate 4 lines there to that slot, you'll just not use 2 of them. Without manual bifurcation you get nothing, that drive will not "bifurcate" for you.

    I can see the argument for this kind of drive but there are issues with the marketplace. Drives are sold on speed and this thing is slow on paper compared to others. Most building systems are not that worried about pcie lanes unless they are loading up on peripherals at which point they already want that straight up gen 5 drive for what they do. I think this is too much complexity to sell as much as i think limiting the lanes used is a good idea since 5GB/s is plenty fast for practical use

    • @guily6669
      @guily6669 Před 6 měsíci

      I don't see is the complexity part but agree with the rest...
      I actually think it's just cheaper for them judging how this gen one of the things both AMD and Nvidia cheaped out was PCi-e lanes on their GPUs while mostly only AMD did it last gen but it became a huge problem too for ppl with old PCI-e 3.0 PC's that want to upgrade GPU some of their most recent GPUs perform worse than buying so much cheaper used last gen GPUs and getting the real PCI-e X16 version...
      But in terms of drives I also think Samsung 990 is enough and therefore cutting it's PCI-e lanes aren't really damaging it like the GPUs.
      Instead would have been better was to get lots of M.2 slots PCI 5.0 2x on any modern motherboard even the cheapest ones instead of getting sometimes only 1 M.2 pci 5.0 4x and being able to add much more SSDs in the future cause it's something we need to sadly be constantly adding more if we dont want to keep deleting data to put new stuff.
      Ps: I actually have a decently fast enough for me M.2 PCI 4.0 SSD and I'm even far from getting it's full speed on my old PCI 3.0 PC and don't care, but I went for a used Strix RX6700XT so I wouldn't dare loosing any FPS from the PCI lanes since I'm already loosing more than enough on the PC being old...

    Nice idea but without agressive bifurcation support down to x2 (I.e. x2x2 in a x4 slot, multiple x4 connectors but only x2 gen5 support or x2x2x2x2+x8 in a x16) or gen5 x1 or x2 slots the extra lanes are wasted per connector. Intel z690 and z790 can only split the gen5 x16 slot into two x8 slots. AMD supports x4x4x4x4 but still not x2, so the xtra lanes are wasted anyway. Most x1 slots are gen3 except very few AMD that are gen4. So far ... Future will tell or Samsung already knows of future support... I know of a 10Gbps ethernet card that runns at x2 in Gen3 mode or x1 in gen4 ... Unfortunate I only have gen3 in the x1 slots so I waste a x4 slot for my older 10Gbps card. More gen5 x1 and x2 to the ppl.

Sequential write & read speed above 1GB is a luxury. Consistently mind you... any drive that does 7GB/s only does it for a few minutes at most.

      Then make numerous copies of Linux ISO with YUMI which takes the ISO’s and copies all those files over to the USB. It’s those little files that make the big difference. It’s really those other numbers in the bottom 4 of the 8 that truly make the difference.
      My other two flash drives had significant poorer lower numbers of those last four and they took so much longer for the _Exact_ same files it was frustrating. So then after I ran CrysralDiskMark and took screen shoots and labeled the flash drives !!
