Billy Joel is so amazing. His catalogue is extensive and quite varied. This song always struck me as having come from a deep heartbreak. It just seems that he was betrayed and hurt by someone. “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” and “Goodnight Saigon” are two more powerful songs to check out from this amazingly talented guy. 🌺✌️

I read an old review of 52nd St. that read "the sweet music of Honesty is sabotaged by trite lyrics." I've read other places where Honesty is criticized for having weak lyrics. I disagree but to each his own.

The most mind-blowing thing to me about Billy is, I heard him in an interview talking about how he only ever really wanted to compose music when he was first starting out. He had no desire to write lyrics to his music until he was told he would never get any airplay for strictly instrumental music. He then started writing lyrics and it turns out he's as good of a lyricist as he is a composer. Truly a musical genius.

He's a good singer and better pianist than an overwhelming majority of pop artists. He's great to listen to in those aspects honestly he doesn't hold a candle to the highest standards set in those categories, his songwriting however is outstanding and why people really love him, and his humility and how he's learned from others is inspiring.

Billy is SOOOO good. Massive catalog but I mostly prefer his early stuff to his later stuff in the 80s that was more "popish". The later stuff still was good, and a few great ones even, but the earlier stuff has really stood the test of time.

I LOVE Paul McCartney too as well as Billy Joel and they admire each other's song writing. I ALWAYS WISHED that they would compose a song TOGETHER! It would be INCREDIBLE!!! The last concert at Shea Stadium before it was demolished, was done by Billy Joel, and Paul McCartney also appeared on stage with him, since he did a concert at Shea with the Beatles in 1965 and 1966. They did Back in The USSR together.

Billy Joel was a great fan of the Beatles and of course of Paul Mc Cartney. And it's true he sometimes sounds like him. They perfomance together on stage in a Billy Joel's concert in New York. It was so cool cause Paul just arrived on a flight and went straight to the concert to peform a Beatles's song with Billy. Besides, i also think Billy Joel looks like Stallone at Rocky movie. But, this song it's not only about a couple relationship, also is about a work relationship cause Billy went throught a lot of disapointed situations with some managers who took avantage of his business. He lost much money because of it. So Honesty is very important in this industry. Billy Joel is one of my favorite artist ever. He is so talented writing, composing music and performance piano and guitar. He is complete musician.

Nominated for a Song Of The Year Grammy and absolutely should have won it. Believe it or not, this song game him terrible writers block...Billy writes music first and then lyrics, which is different from what many artists do. He was stuck on this one for a while, and his drummer (Liberty DeVitto) started jokingly making up some rather offensive lyrics of his own 😂, so Billy had to scramble a bit to get a proper song. I'd say he did pretty well in the clutch. 😉

Another example that fits in the 3% exception include if nazis come to your door asking if your hiding a family in your attic. Regardless of the truth, the answer is not, "Yeah, totes!" It's "Nah man, nothing to see here."

Billy took classical piano lessons from the age of four and his teacher also taught ballet and so he would get picked on by some of the other kids. His dad was European and left the family home and America because he could not settle and Billy later took up boxing to learn how to defend himself.
On the album cover to The Stranger, Billy is sitting on a bed and there is a mask and also a pair of boxing gloves hanging on the wall and the album and the film Rocky were both released in 1977, with one reviewer accusing Billy of trying to cash in and jump on the boxing bandwagon by having Sylvester Stallone on the album cover!

I listened to the American station AFN in Germany at the end of the 70s. I didn't understand much English as a child but I always listened to the music in the evenings. The songs accompanied me as a teenager and I was proud to understand the name Bily Joel and his album 52nd Street. So I bought the then current record and came into contact with this brilliant musician. I am very glad that by this coincidence I discovered Billy Joel for myself. Many albums by him followed. I love this Billy Joel train you are on! He is one of my favorites. I don't know how much background you have read or heard about him, but he has had a string of relationships and marriages with famous and not-so-famous women, and have had his share of heartaches with each. I have seen him on a lot of talk shows over the years. A lot of his songs come from personal experiences. As a woman, I have imagined over the years that he would be a little hard to live with. Lol! Great reaction! Thanks!

Billy Joel has had many relationships (and wives) most notably (in my mind) was Christie Brinkley the super model so he has plenty of experience to draw from when writing great songs. His songs about relationships are some of the best ones out there.

70's Billy Joel is the best Billy Joel imho, although Glass Houses and The Nylon Curtain are very strong albums as well.
