  • Here's my review of the Lemmy bass that I bought. Please keep in mind that this is just my experience of this particular bass! You might have worse luck than me if you decide to order one!

    I know the video is a year old now so you probably won't read this, but I think I know what the issue with the bridge pickup is. To me it sounds like the inner coils of the pickup are wired out of phase with each other. The way to fix this would be to reverse the wiring on one of the coils. You'd have to disassemble the pickup to do that though, so not sure how practical that'd be

    • @BasEirik
      @BasEirik  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey man, thanks for that suggestion! Maybe I'll try it one day. Shouldn't be too hard right?

    • @oleksiishekhovtsov1564
      @oleksiishekhovtsov1564 Před 3 lety +2

      @@BasEirik Well... depends on the pickup, but it's kinda tough. You'd be rewiring the part of the pickup not meant to be taken appart. I'm genuinely not sure if it's worth it. The steps are:
      I: take of the pickup cover (desolder if needed)
      2: Remove the waxing inside the pickup
      3 Remove the thin electrical tape wound around the pickup winding.
      4: Carefully rewire one of the coils without breaking the delicate wire that connects to the copper winding. I messed up more humbuckers than I'd like to admit whilst trying to do this back in the day.
      5. Add a new electrical tape around the winding.
      6. Rewax the pickup
      7. Resolder the pickup cover
      So, yeah, not sure if the trouble's worth it... but if you go ahead with it, do let me know.

    • @BasEirik
      @BasEirik  Před 2 lety

      Well, the pickups might be worthless like they were on mine, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with mine.
      Thomann has some Rick-copies under the Harley Benton brand. They're probably much better, although they're pretty ugly.

      @BasEirik  Před 2 lety

      @@LC-xi7xi yeah you might (probably) have to change the pickups, but IMO that's the only real problem. The only other thing would be that they might be heavy, my Lemmy bass is certainly very heavy.

    So I know that rickenbacker made all of these a little bit different so each one had a uniqueness to it, but do you know how to spot which ones are fake or not? Because I look online and the most I see one go for is like $850 which is weird when they apparently originally sold at $1800,
    and then I heard that someone sold one for around $13,000, so I don’t know if I should try and get one of these or just play it safe and grab a standard Rick.

    • @BasEirik
      @BasEirik  Před 5 lety +1

      The most obvious giveaway would be the pickups IMO. Most fakers, if not all, that i've seen have pickups that have a solid gold finish (like mine). Rickenbackers pickups are black in the middle. The bridge will look a bit different. The pickup selector will be bigger than the original. The shape of the headstock will be a bit off, as well as the truss rod cover with the logo. Also the oak leave carving looks exactly the same on every Chinese bass that i've seen. On the original they vary more and are more intricate.
      If it's a bass up for $850 it's almost certainly a fake (and a rather expensive one). Rickenbacker only made about 40 of these, so seeing one for sale is very rare and it will also be extremely expensive.
      If you're looking for the Rick sound and feel, I'd advise you to get a standard 4003 or something like that. The Chinese basses don't come close to the original.

    I would have respect for China basses if they would have just designed their own bass. For the price you probably could deal with the issues. But counterfeiting is disgusting.

    Real Rickenbacker guitars are definitely not perfect. I have three that I’ve bought since 1977. If you want perfect, Schecter is much better but personality. Ric

    • @BasEirik
      @BasEirik  Před 3 lety

      Yeah I think you're right actually, my 4003 from 2011 also has a small defect in the finish around the bridge. But I still get amazed sometimes when I haven't played it for a while at how well it plays and how stable it feels, so in that department I can definitely feel the quality. Compared to the chickenbacker, it's almost perfect!

    These Chinese instruments are not supposed to be a perfect rendition of what it's representing. They are far better for the price than the stuff I had when I was younger than you.

    • @BasEirik
      @BasEirik  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes, although as i mentioned in the video the pickups on this one were almost useless from the start. Budget brands like Squier/Epiphone/Yamaha are far superior IMO, for essentially the same price.
