Mates in British English, it can use with male and female right, Mark? It’s like ‘ guys ‘ ?
I live in the USA for a long while, I’m a surgical assistant for cardiac surgery in the USA for over a decade. I teach English as my gig to Thai people who cannot understand English all the way and need explanation in Thai as the same time.
The most important is, I can keep myself learning English until I’ll drop dead.
By the way, I’m in love with your content because I can learn American and British English as the same time.

Hello! Yes, you are right. You can use "mates" to describe men or women, *however*, it's usually with men describing men, and women describing women.
A man: "I went out with my mates." I imagine he means male friends.
A woman: "I went out with my mates." I imagine she means female friends. Obviously this isn't a strict rule and it depends on the individual, but that's the image I have in mind when I hear it. Hopefully that makes sense.

Thank you very much for doing this amazing work for advanced learners like me. This is what I needed most, but I have an idea of explaining news articles. I mean, I have this problem with common and spoken vocabulary, phrases, and colloquial language when it comes to talking about certain ideas and concepts, such as animals, crimes, weather, personalities, and so on. For example, how about picking a news article and explaining it by breaking down some hard vocabulary words and colloquials? I think it will be a pretty good way to expand vocabulary.

Same thing here in Egypt. People are addicted to drinking tea on every occasion after breakfast, lunch and before going to bed . If you invite some friends over you can offer them a cup of tea. If you visit a coffee shop, restaurant or a cafe you will find tea the first thing on their menus. It is like a pretty standard hot drink here in Egypt. And a hot cup of coffee comes in second place after tea as the most preferred of hot drinks.
I'll add that to the long list of reasons I want to visit Egypt! It's good to know there are other tea addicts out there 😄 - well done using 'pretty standard' as well, and thank you for such a detailed comment!
