i think that it shouldn't even matter whether or not McCain is a war hero. It should matter that he's a human being and to treat a person's impending death with such a callous comment is deplorable. That's why it was leaked. Maybe someone there actually had a heart and couldn't let it go.

the meeting was a conference call with Republican congressional leaders. It wasn't a private conversation among staffers!
(which would not make talking trash about a heroic vet any better either).

Seriously, it does not matter whether the comment was made in private or not it should not have been said. When is this administration going to learn the difference between right and wrong? If the leader behaves badly and says bad things then we should not be surprised his staffers would do the same. Just disgusting.
What an irony. During the Vietnam war, when people were just so fed up with the lies of the government and its unwillingness to admit the defeat that was so apparent to everyone, ire turned the public against the soldiers. That was a mistake and the real culprits were never brought to the justice of a prison cell they deserved.
Here, so many years later, we see one of those soldiers again treated with that same disrespect - blaming the soldier for being shot down, blaming the soldier for being caught, blaming the soldier for being permanently injured, for being sick and ultimately blaming him for dying.
The inexplicable heartlessness, the self-blinding arrogance that feeds this unholy group is too saddening for words. The ages will know how to measure the hero and the heel but we, alive in this shattering time, can honestly attest we knew them both and had no trouble whatsoever knowing who was the hero and who was the heel.

Some of my friends came home from Vietnam forever changed, one didn’t come home. Senator John McCain is an American hero, God be with him and his family in this difficult time. Draft Dodger Trump disrespected Senator John McCain and all of our POWs when he said you’re not a hero if you’re captured.
The difference between a child speaking & an adult speaking is their maturity. Adults know when to keep their big mouths shut; otherwise be humble and apologize in public!
At this point, if I were one of the McCains I wouldn't want an apology because it wouldn't be a genuine one.
