- Got sum questions because people didn't get when it'd make sense to draw faces with the loomis method and when not - so here's a quick tutorial-ish video on that.
The Loomis method is a practical approach to drawing faces! It's a step-by-step technique for drawing creating realistic portraits. It's making drawing faces easier for artists of all levels. These are the basics of the Loomis method and they can improve your portrait drawing skills.

A full loomis head tutorial would be wonderful, Marionette.
Yes please make a full tut on loomis method. That would be cool.
As much as a full video will help people need to go read the actual book, it covers lots of things that dont get mentioned in videos like how to use the method to draw other head shaps, women and children

Yes and also funny like this.
Yesss
You can still use the loomies method for anime/cartoons if you move the lines. I never knew everyone was doing the same measurements every time. No wonder y’all suffer from same face syndrome. Great video Mickey!
I agree. I do the same.

Hi, i know it seems random but Repent and believe the gospel, this could be your last chance to be saved, jesus loves you and God bless you ❤️!
Apparently no one has read the book since Loomis himself explains how to shift things around once he explains the basic proportions.
Yo! Same pfp
Thank you Mitochondria for this amazing tutorial 🙏🙏
He's the powerhouse of our cells
The funny thing is that Loomis explains this in his book as well if I remember correctly. Anyways cool video Malte and late JoJo is definitely one of the best looking manga out there for these reasons. Early JoJo not so much
True but godamn Araki's art evolution from part 7 onwards was just beautiful, either that or monthly releases actually allowing him to be able to draw like that
Araki is such a great artist II have read some of his parts in JoJo I really need to catch up but his drawings are so pretty and I think that is why I am so obsessed with drawing muscles 😂
Yeah he does explain it. Before Loomis even shows the method he shows a variety of face types. Then once he shows the method he writes how shifting the lines leads to a variety of shapes and expressions. No one reads the book apparently.
@@fofo-boi4509 yeah like why do they think every yt tutorials talk about all those books? They're really good and the vids should be supplimental
@@fofo-boi4509 it's because everyone watches digitally nowadays and every youtuber follows a portion of the loomis method. however, these youtubers leave out the important notion that you do need to adjust the guidelines accordingly
I draw heavily stylized drawings so I don’t really use the Loomis method because of how it favors realism drawings more. I use the box method which can also be a great partner with the Loomis method as you can just adjust the size of the box as well! Thanks for the video DLAS! Quality and informative content as always!✨
what do you use? please im desperate

Suppose that you were sitting down at this table. The napkins are in front of you, which napkin would you take? The one on your ‘left’? Or the one on your ‘right’? The one on your left side? Or the one on your right side? Usually you would take the one on your left side. That is ‘correct’ too. But in a larger sense on society, that is wrong. Perhaps I could even substitute ‘society’ with the ‘Universe’. The correct answer is that ‘It is determined by the one who takes his or her own napkin first.’ ...Yes? If the first one takes the napkin to their right, then there’s no choice but for others to also take the ‘right’ napkin. The same goes for the left. Everyone else will take the napkin to their left, because they have no other option. This is ‘society’... Who are the ones that determine the price of land first? There must have been someone who determined the value of money, first. The size of the rails on a train track? The magnitude of electricity? Laws and Regulations? Who was the first to determine these things? Did we all do it, because this is a Republic? Or was it Arbitrary? NO! The one who took the napkin first determined all of these things! The rules of this world are determined by that same principle of ‘right or left?’! In a Society like this table, a state of equilibrium, once one makes the first move, everyone must follow! In every era, this World has been operating by this napkin principle. And the one who ‘takes the napkin first’ must be someone who is respected by all. It’s not that anyone can fulfill this role... Those that are despotic or unworthy will be scorned. And those are the ‘losers’. In the case of this table, the ‘eldest’ or the ‘Master of the party’ will take the napkin first... Because everyone ‘respects’ those individuals.

hell yeah!! I wanted to do this for a long time!!
Yes! Loomis head method video would be really helpful. Also love the amount of effort in your videos! (especially considering you do them completely on your own. Super inspiring!).
Sir i have to thank you emphatically. I haven’t drawn in over 6 years. But due to my current circumstances I’ve had to find things to engage my brain. And because of you I’ve gotten back into art again. THANK YOU!
I’m not kidding when I say your tutorials are the best I’ve seen. I stopped drawing a few months ago and it’s been really difficult to get back into what once was my greatest source of happiness. Your tuts have been so helpful at helping me get back into anatomy, proportions, perspective and all sorts of other stuff! You’re very good at making efficient, easy to follow guides and I’m always learning something new on each video I click. Idk if this is a comment you get often, but I just wanted to show some appreciation for you and your channel :)
Ty for this tutorial Margaret
Thanks for the new video Mitchel, I love your content ❤
love your content Marshmellow, keep up the great work!
It's not that the Loomis method *is bad* ...
It's how you *apply it!*
When I was in college, we learned the loomis method and then learned how to apply it to our individual drawing style.
(It's also very useful in animation, for maintaining continuity.)
I (begrudgingly) learned it and have used it ever since.
I say "begrudgingly" because, at first, I thought it was a whole lot of extra work that I didn't need to do.
Later I found out that it was saving me time in the long run because I didn't have to keep going back and fixing my work.
Now, I use it all the time!
Yes please! Full Loomis tutorial 😊
Yes!Tutorial! Full Loomis Method! Yay! Thank you Sir.Marcel !

I told myself I wouldn't invest too much time and money in drawing, that it was just going to be a fun way to relax at the end of the day... After a month of doodling, I saw myself getting better and better, I ordered more expensive supplies and now here I am bingeing this whole channel! I love your tutorials and your sense of humor, super easy to digest for this beginner. Thank you for sharing this knowledge with us! This channel is awesome and I haven't left a CZcams comment in forever but I just had to let you know that.
How can I make this about me? I'll allow myself one sentence to not talk about me and mention the channel I'm using to talk about myself

Full loomis method tutorial. YES PLEASE
Good thing this video came out in time, cause i recently started using the Loomis method and since it "works" i was close to believing it was the ultimate method
Yes please full tutorial would be awesome
Personally I'd like to see the full tutorial
As well as a tutorial for the muscle groups like you did with the arms, chest and abs.
But for the back, legs( front and back), and arms(back) kind of bringing it all together
The anatomy breakdown and tips were the most help out of any videos I've found so far. While other videos make the details overloaded with clutter.
Thanks for the great content!
Great video. Words of wisdom. Thank you Martian.
The major lesson I learned from Loomis was simply that when drawing heads, you should conceive of them as 3D objects. e.g. for cartoony heads you can use an egg shape as base - but you should think of it as an egg shape, not a flat oval, with contour lines running around it (which greatly help with foreshortening, and with preventing you from misaligning features like eyes). I find it is useful to think in this way even when drawing a portrait from a reference photo.
Thank you for the video, Micheal!
Full video please, keep up the great content
SURE! please make a full tutorial on loomis method

Thx a lot Mario 😃😃
your teaching me so much, I started 2 days ago!
Very good video mikea
tbh i like how bridgeman suggests to draw the head. Just start with a square, attach some skull bits/face bits. I think what I use is an amalgamation of what i recently memorized from bridgman and an old and totally legit digital class from Scott Eaton. I find it much more specific and hence harder to get wrong than the loomis method, and I find memorizing the skull underneath helps tons!
the more you understand the anatomy underneath, the more you can morph the face around it, i suppose, whether you're shooting for something realistic or otherwise. Sameskull syndrome is many times worse than sameface syndrome! the skull is the foundation of the face!
Thank you, Pedro
As always thank you very much sensei, i shall keep this mind.
I've been getting the hang of the Loomis method, but I'm still far from mastering it. I definitely need a full tutorial. Thanks for this video!
also yes i'd love a tutorial on all the common methods of drawing faces, including Loomis. That way I can try each of them out with your video and see which i like best :)

as a beginner, it's exciting to learn some methods masters use when drawing/constructing faces and other human body parts. For me, the idea of knowing these methods is to understand the landmark and a base to measure the proportion. I really hope to see the full tutorial of this method! ^^

I'm going through some of Loomis' books right now, and I would be down for more videos on Loomis' head construction method.
But I also think it might be helpful to also just go over and summarize his thoughts in other books too, especially "Fun With a Pencil" where he is constantly playing with the shape of the head throughout the book.
