    txg.ca - Many viewers ask us whether they are good enough to play blade irons, and the question of blade versus cavity design comes up very often in the golf community. In this video we tested a blade iron against a cavity iron with identical lofts to see what kind of performance differences we could find.

    As always, we really appreciate everyone taking the time to watch and join in on the discussion on the channel! Just wanted to leave a quick note regarding some of the feedback suggesting we do this test with a high handicap player. The reason we did not go that route is that we wanted to provide data that compares things like ball speed, launch angles, spin rates, forgiveness, etc. between the two club head designs. In order to do that most accurately, we felt that a consistent golf swing was best for the job. Introducing the high variability in swings that a high handicap player would produce (in our opinion) would greatly reduce the objectivity of the data provided and really just turn the test into a record of one player's experience with blades versus cavity back irons. In a perfect world, we'd be doing this sort of test with an actual swing robot to eliminate all variables introduced by an individual's golf swing. We hope you enjoyed the test, and stay tuned for future videos where we plan to dive into this topic even further!

      I play Wilson FG-59 baby tour blades...because I love how they look and feel...and for the very fact that they punish me for my mistakes. I don't think one can improve one's ball striking through the use of GI clubs. I also have a set of Cleveland Tour Action 3...small head, cavity back irons.... non offset. The two sets compliment each other very well...with similar head shape, size, loft and lie. I usually start the season with the Clevelands...then when my swing comes around...move to the Wilsons. I also find that playing blades keeps me from overswinging...leading to purer strikes and much greater consistency...without loss of distance. Just last week I hit my Wilson 9 iron 140yds to a back of the green pin position...then of course missed my birdie putt. Anyway...thanks for the video.

      I think the problem when comparing these two club designs, is Matt! He's just too damn consistent. Aren't you really attempting to compare forgiveness with this test? If so you need to compare similar off centre hits rather than perfect sweet spot contact. 10mm off centre on both clubs to see how much the game improvement club will bring the result back for less than perfect hits. Matt's just too good for this test to be meaningful imo.

      @@PrtPrtPrtGood Exactly what I was thinking. Its great that Matt was consistent. But to really dive into the worthiness of application for comparison purposes. Consistent 'off center' shots would seem to be a big piece missing from this experiment. I love this channel though, these guys come up with great ideas to test and then just do it.

    Blades get a bad wrap. More mass for lag, turf interaction, follow through and smoother transition. Well struck goes the exact distance. Poor struck hurts but unless over a hazard doesn't kill you. I also feel you learn faster because you can feel the misses more accurately. That said I'm not trying to win tournaments

    • @kourt2469
      @kourt2469 Před 6 lety +2

      Brant Chmiel what do you mean by more mass for lag? The head weight of a blade 8 is around 274 grams, the head weight for a cavity 8 iron is also 274 grams. They don’t weigh any more than the other.

    I've just been back playing golf for 9 months after a 33 year hiatus. I've been through 3 sets of irons this year and come full circle today. I've gone back to what I knew as a boy in the '80s, a traditional club that I've only found out this year is referred to as a"blade"! It's a golf club that we all used until the Ping Eye 2 came out, nothing fancy, nothing special, or scary. I've bought a set of Miura MB 101s, and they're awesome! In fact, to those who think "blades" are scary, I'd argue the opposite: I'd rather that the ball looked bigger, because that's what you're trying to hit! Think about it! Also: I don't want to be rewarded for my mistakes, I want feedback to make me know what I've done wrong, and then I can make progress to be a better ball striker. You're not going to get that from so-called game improvement irons! It's time to take the stabilisers off! I feel like I'm six years old again and coming of age! Woo Hoo! The last time I felt like this was on a Raleigh Boxer!

    Something that gets overlooked with MBs is that on mishits, they come up short which for me is actually a good thing. I would rather be straight and still short then go the same distance and be 15 yards to the left or the right that gets into real trouble.

    This is some great information in here regarding offset. I really need to drive down to Toronto for a fitting when COVID is done, my appointment was cancelled on me because of the cases are up. I suffer from pulls and pull hooks as my miss. I noticed when I changed to Miura CB 801 from Ping ie irons that I have much less of a draw and hooks. There is very minimal offset in the Miura's in comparison and I had a hunch that my fewer hooks/pulls were related to the lack of offset in them! I had some MP-20 SEL's before as well and those too hooked much less! AWESOME info!

    Thank you for continuing to educate me. I'm 61, mid-handicapper and using the MP69. Loving it though not relishing the punishments from the mishits. I chose it for three reasons; it forces me to focus, it's more flexible for loft & lie adjustments and lastly I have no interest in big club faces with offsets. GREAT VIDEO! I find my ability to hit the middle of a golf club is directly correlated to how small the head size is - i.e. the smaller the head, the more centered my hits are. I play small headed irons now, even though I'm a mid-tens handicap. I'd love to play PING G irons but I end up spraying the ball all over and loosing my confidence. #golfindustrymarketingcrap

    Great video! Once again it shows that more people should be playing blades. The marketing has made people afraid of blades, when in fact they are more rewarding to hit and look better. Also, if a flaw creeps into your swing, the blade will show it faster, allowing the player to correct it faster before the flaw is grooved into their swing. Again, great show!

    • @chynz330
      @chynz330 Před 6 lety +1

      Anthony McKenzie I'm not a fitter but I watch a lot of fittings and understand that cast clubs rarely, if ever, change in lie, particularly loft, because they are so rigid. You literally need a torch to bend them. Now that changes if you're constantly smacking clubs into trees or hitting rocks, but I know forged clubs need to be checked at least once a season because even for me, who barely plays, my lies and loft changed a degree with Mizunos Mp-53's with the 6,8,& Pw, clubs I use more. And I'm not even a hard hitter. They're just so soft!

    Love this video! As someone who grew up using 690MB to learn the game but just got into a set of P770, I can appreciate the results of this video. I don’t think there is much of a difference outside of look at address and turf interaction. It all comes down to preference, I actually prefer a blade but went with the slight cavity of the P770 for a few reasons, A)couldn’t quite get comfortable with look of 718MB of Mizuno blades at address, B) P730 doesn’t come in LH unfortunately but would have love to test those due to the shape at address. But love the look of P770 down at the ball, nearly no offset and pretty compact head, kinda best of both worlds. And as someone who only gets out once a week really anymore, that extra bit of help never hurts, although I think its 90% mental at that point.

It depends on what a player needs out of their fitting, for Sam part of the story was getting more distance which he wouldn't get with the Miura's traditional lofts and lower (comparable) ball speed. He also needed the fat/heavy shot forgiveness which again would be unlikely to occur with the Miura's. Not to mention Sam's wife would probably murder him if she found out he was trying out more clubs!! 😆

    Hey guys and welcome back. Thanks just for a few swings but a lot of good discussion between both of you two.
    The take-home-message for me is to think even more of a "combo set": blades for the shorter clubs for feel and awesome consistency, cavaties for the longer clubs with their advantages.
    What do you think about?
    But nevertheless: one has gotta be fit by YOU👍🏻

    I bought a beat up set of 710 MB's for $150 to practice with and ended up putting them in my bag. I found I mishit them a lot less than I did my AP2's, which I could only put down to the visuals of the MB being noticeably smaller so I subconsciously put a smoother swing on it because I knew my margin for error was smaller rather than overhitting my AP2's. I feel a lot of people are scared of hitting blades but there is no better club to hit when you're wanting to improve ball striking because the feedback from strike is instant.

    I switched from AP2 to MP5 for 2 years ago and have never stroked the ball this good. Now I feel that I'm in control of the club and get clear feedback when I miss hit the ball which have improved my swing. That I have never felt earlier.

    I used to buy a set of Titleist 710 Mbs back in the day when I played of 20 just because I loved the look of them. I lowered my handicap to 8 in about a year and a half. But literally everyone recommended me a set of 712 ap2 so I bought and played them for about a year. Didn't see a massive difference in forgiveness. When you miss you are going to miss anyway. The turf interaction was very different too. Eventually I changed back to the blades and lowered my handicap to 1 within the next 4 years. I just prefer the look and turf interaction of a blade it also feels more consistent. This year I bought a new set of 718 mbs but a progressive set with the 4 and 5 as CBs. The best set of irons ever!

    Do you have any recommendations for medium game improvement irons to try. I am looking to upgrade my current set of Cobra Amp cell irons at the end of this season.
    Currently I am looking at Ping G400, Callaway Apex and the Srixon Z565 (after watching this video).
    Thanks keep up the good work.

    Nothing beats the sound of that solid CLICK with blade irons when you hit 'em right. Worth it for me in spite of my handicap being in scientific notation :) never mind that I haven't golfed in many years now...

    I was a Callaway X Hot2 Pro player for the last 3 years, I have now gone to Mizuno MP18 Blade 7-pw and MMC 4,5,6. I am so much more consistent with my distances and left to right dispersion with the blades then with the small cavity backs of the x Hots. Granted I've lost about a club and a half of distance but I knew that would be the case and my iron play has never been better.

    Ian show us how you fix the gapping problem with one length. Many reviewers seem to write them off, but you prove every time that shaft,loft and lie can be manipulated to a players advantage. I want to try them, but haven't seen what a real fitter can do with them....bring in your average golfer....keep up the good work.

    Thx! I'm a new viewer and learning lots of good stuff. This video has me questioning sole width. With my steep attack angle with irons, I chose Ping G15 because I'd read "diggers" benefit from wider soles. However, from your comments (and the fact that Ping narrowed the soles of more recent G-series irons), I'm wondering if the wide soles are helping as much as I think.

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  Před 6 lety +1

      Would be worth trying an iron head design with a narrower sole to see how it performs for you. Still lots of forgiving iron designs with a narrow sole design (i.e. Taylormade P790, Srixon Z565)

    Hey guys, recently discovered your channel and am hooked. Awesome content!
    Curious though if someone came in with those Srixon irons and were hitting them like Matt there with consistent over draw, is that not something you can help adjust with fitting or is it an issue created by the offset like you suggested in the video, and that becomes a bit much to correct?

    Great Data/information/conversation yet again. You guys are firing on all cylinders now with these videos. Have thought about lowering the loft of my Titleist CB 716 to try to gain a little bit more distance, lower spin and help in the wind, without having to go to game improvement iron. Question would be about bounce on club, face angle and turf interaction, is this an issue or would 2 or so degrees not make a big difference.

    I'm beginning to sound repetitive, but another super informative, made easy to understand video for us "normal, non technical" golfers. The standard keeps increasing with everyone one of your productions, well done. HOWEVER, Ian, are you losing your Scottish identity? In today's video Matt was hitiing a Zee 565 iron but in a previous video he was hitting a Zed Star ball, so where are you going with your pronunciation ? lol lol :) Keep up the GREAT WORK (from a British Expat living in Malaysia)

    Great video. Loved that blades are more consistent if you can strike them
    I did find that you could get really “hot” shots with game improvement - like a week struck 8i could do 160-165, but you might get one that just comes out hot and goes 175-180

    Great video guys. I think a lot of golfers are deterred from trying players/blade like irons because of of the sigma that those clubs are only for single to low handicap golfers. I think that golfers need to consider what is appealing to the eye as they set up to the ball. If a club doesn't look good to me at address, I usually don't hit it well. Keep you the great content. Always look forward to your videos. Any chance for a WITB on Lydia Ko given she just won recently?

    Cool comparison! Obviously the test doesn't take into account play over a period of time and playing conditions. I don't play too often these days and play on Scottish links courses. Although I see the benefit for me to move to something more forgiving than my blades, I'm not sure how workable they would be. It would have been a good thing to see Matt trying to hit a variety of shots, from knock down half shots to high/low draws/fades to see how the two compare. I appreciate this wasn't the purpose of todays test, but perhaps you could do this as a follow up?

  • @JohanSchmidt
    @JohanSchmidt Před 4 lety

    Very interesting! Most of the manufacturers unfortunately only offer blades with super stiff shafts which only those with very fast swing speeds can hit. So it's a case of no matter how much you like the shape of the blade head, unless you're prepared to pay extra for differents shafts, there isn't much joy. Ben Hogan are offering blade heads with a large range of shaft option - from heavy Gold Dynamic shafts to light UST graphite shafts.

    Great video. I have been wanting to try the 565 was worried they might still have a flier in them. Thinking a combo set might work well for me. Want something close in loft to my x22s. Don't need strong loft hot irons. Want that consistency of distance.

      Z565's are fantastic Philip! They work very well in a combo set, in fact I just played with someone yesterday that had a combo set of 565, 765 or 965 from 4-PW
