    Our band was playing one night and a guy got up on stage to play guitar with us. I was on drums and we let people get up and play all the time. After about 6 George Jones` songs in a row I asked the singer: "Hey Mike, why all the George Jones` songs?" He pointed at the guy on stage and said: "That`s George Jones` guitar player!" It was close to Christmas and George was visiting family in Louisiana. He was down the road at a relative`s house and his guitar player had driven his big car with horns on the hood to the club! The front plate said "No Show." We tried to get the guitar player to go get him but he wouldn`t.

    Wow, thank you Joe! Many things came to mind listening to this segment. One jumps out: when Billy says he got out as a dinosaur, the expression on his face and the sound in his voice seem to convey the feeling that he left just as musical integrity was being pushed to the side. He seems real proud, in a good way. Thank you again!

    By damn, he nailed it when he was talking about how homogenized everything sounds now. They use the same seven session players on every production and there's no variety in the approach any more. Crying shame. Good interview, Joe.

    Always interesting to hear an interview, both parts ,someone like Billy Sherrill as successful as his career is, to hear what makes them tick. Sounds like he is one of those "it's my way or the highway' type guys. Man he sure was involved in many hits songs for sure. Sure sad so many of these musicians have passed since you done these 'Vault Series" interviews. Thanks again Joe for capturing the back stories on many great musicians of this era.

    I have loved Billy Sherrill songs, fantastic. A smart executive, businessman. Learned a lot about his stable, CBS. In the past, RCA and their producer got the spotlight. Billy was open to answer questions, but he waited for your questions. You, obviously did a lot of research to come up with your interview. Lots of great information here. I wanted more about pedal steel guitars and violins, mandolins, dobro. Peter Drake, yeah, great textures, sublime, not overwhelming, tasteful. Writers are so important, co-writing, bouncing ideas off each other. Billy’s cosmopolitan sound with Charlie Rich, terrific. Johnny Paycheck had great songs and could really sing. Nashville has so many artists and styles. Late forties through 1970’s were my favorite times. Thanks for sharing Billy with us.

    • @thomaspick4123
      @thomaspick4123 Před 4 lety +1

      When Billy spoke of the intelligence of the singers learning songs and the time it took, whew! Besides Tammy’s magnificent, unique voice, she was smart and could learn a song quickly. Also, she could sing the harmony to her songs perfectly. Anyone who sings harmony knows how difficult it is. Groups that sing harmony and duets are popular. The unique timbre of the voice blend creates such character.

To think he started from the very bottom and worked his way to the very top and see the music industry completely come and then go, is some story and now that's he's gone every word and story is so important. Unfortunately he lived long enough to see the music industry get destroyed by the internet and at the end seemed glad he was out of the shitty business it's become.

      I was there when it happened Kale... Elvis actually ended up not liking Billy at least for a few years. Billy was like family to me. I knew him about as well as most anyone. Billy kinda liked messing around with people in a fun way. Elvis didn’t understand Billy’s sense of humor..... at all:). He also was kinda freaked out that Billy and Snake( Ron Reynolds the engineer ) carried little hand guns. They don’t have guns in England. Billy and Snake would shoot their guns while in the studio into the thick Nashville phone book yellow pages and bet what letter the bullet would stop. That didn’t go over well at all with Elvis.. Billy also had Elvis double every instrument on a song they were recording as a joke. I mean they doubled the drums, bass. keyboards, guitars .... everything... As it turned out it sounded great... Elvis thought Billy was a genius!!! Billy was just as surprised... it actually sounded great but it was meant to be a joke on Elvis. I think Elvis finally caught on that Billy was joking around with him and got very upset but like I said I think in time he understood Billy really liked him and the album was one of his best. Thanks for watching... Joe

A legend passes away and his recollections becomes a train wreck due to a half dozen blurbs. I recognize that everyone needs to earn a living and pay the bills but please show the respect the guest deserves by hanging the spots at each end versus this method of carpet bombing a mans train of thought.
