Another great Stabler story is the one he told in his autobiography about the time the Oakland police called him in the middle of the night and told him they had Raiders' defensive player John Matusek in custody and asked Stabler to come down to the police station to pick him up. When Stabler asked what Matusek had done, the police told him they found Matusek wandering around shooting street signs with a .357 magnum!
Nah, the gun was found in his car. .44 magnum. I read the story in the newspaper when it HAPPENED. Matu was asked why a big guy like him needed such a big gun. He replied, "I live in Oakland."
@michaelmisczuk1188. Ken "Snake" Stabler told some of the greatest, funniest football stories you'll ever hear! I think my three favorite stories he told were (1) the one he told to Bob Costas and Joe Namath on Costas' "Costas Coast-to-Coast" radio show many, many years ago about when John Matuszak came to the Oakland Raiders in a player trade and head coach John Madden suggested that "Snake" room with Matuszak because Raider officials thought "Snake" would be a calming influence on Matuszak. Stabler told them that he'd rather room with Charles Manson!, (2) when Matusek came to the Raiders for his first practice session with the team in Santa Rosa, California, he came onto the practice field riding on either a horse or a moped wearing a German WW1 spiked helmet. Raiders' Managing General Partner Al Davis was standing on the sidelines next to LB Ted Hendricks and remarked, "I don't know about John"! Hendricks replied, "Al do you really think one more is going to make any difference!?" ( meaning, of course, that one more screwball on a team of screwballs wasn't going to adversely affect that team at all - in fact, it actually probably enhanced that team!, and (3) the story "Snake" told in his autobiography about how either TE Dave Casper or defensive lineman George Bueller loved to play with remote control cars. One day when head coach John Madden was in his office at Santa Rosa sitting at his desk, Casper or Bueller sent a remote control car with a bunch of lit fire crackers attached to it into Madden's office and sent it to stop right below his chair. All of a sudden the players heard, " POP...POP....POP, POP, POP, POP" and Madden comes rushing out of his office yelling, "Goddamnit who did that!".😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.

Stabler, blanda, branch, Casper, Freddie biletnikoff, Lester hayes. Damn those were the days ! Grass fields, less penalties, no replays no gloves lastly most players hated the other teams. No hugs after games.

Mr. Stabler would gather us kids together putting out a circle of chairs and tell us stories much like this one. He was an absolute great and fun guy just like you see in this discussion.
Years and years of fond memories 😊
I miss you dad 🙏
This Detroit Lion fan always enjoyed the Snake, Kenny Stabler, and the bad boys of Oakland, the Raiders.
I remember watching all these guys when I was a little kid. They were all great players. Kenny Stabler was so fun to watch. I had no idea he was this funny.
I am so glad I could watch Kenny Stabler lead that great Raiders squad in the 70's. You knew when he crouched to take the snap that more often than not they would advance all the way to the end zone, whether it was at the start of the First Quarter or in the last two minutes. Great memories and stories from a master of his craft.
Hubbard was 1 of the greatest Raiders.he knew how to do the holy roller shuffle.
Gotta love Kenny!
Lifelong Eagles fan but I could listen to Snake tell stories all day long.
As a 56 yr. old lifelong Bengals fan, I actually loved Kenny Stabler. There was just such a coolness about him, even as a 7yr.old....I sensed he was a *bit* different and him being LH made him that much cooler to me. Thanks Snake! *BOOM*
Then you remember Brian Sipe, I'm sure? Went to SDSU also about the same time as Brian. He was a solid QB.
Best quarterback in the history of the game. His perfect tosses that sliced the air were as sweet as honey.
Always remembered him as a Raider, great nickname, Snake
Life long Auburn fan but damn the Snake was the man!
I would love to have hung out with him for a while.
On the field as clutch a player as ever played!
My all-time favorite. I remember all those clutch marquee games in Baltimore, Oakland, Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl,... she good, so long ago.
one helluva quarterback, the best the raiders ever had. RIP SNAKE.
The Man, The Legend, Superbowl Champion, Football Hall of Fame.
THE SNAKE. RN4L
Nothing like athletes reminiscing. Great stuff.
There was no other quarterback you’d rather have than Snake for orchestrating a game winning drive. Just sit back there and pick you apart. One of the great characters of the game as well.
Kenny " The Snake " Stabler Rest in Peace 🏈
I got to meet Kenny. Great guy! Loved watching him play. Sorry he's gone. RIP Snake.
It's so sad that Snake is gone. He would have told stories until he couldn't walk anymore.
Those southern boys always were good story tellers.
Was a big fan of The Snake back in the day.
I see that he is one personable guy. He can really tell a good story.
Buckeye fan here, but love listening to Snake ......Good Old Boy. Great stories and memories.
I wasn't a raiders fan as a kid but I was always intrigued by the way the snake played and carried himself... I still have respect for him
The Snake! Seemed like a helluva nice dude! The Banaszak story is gold!
I could listen to Snake all night!! Thank you for sharing
Breaks my heart to see what happened to Earl Campbell after all the collisions he initiated. He was one tough SOB
Ken stabler, what a character,
A, great "QB", A Funny Story Teller,
I, later, found, out, after he
Retired."Cool Guy"!
John Lorberter
closest thing to Jimmy Brown you can't get a higher compliment
Not so much now, but back then I was a huge Raider fan. I lived in Oakland and knew all those players he was talking about. Great, insightful stories!
I lived in the Bay Area during that period as well sir-There was NO PLACE to watch a football game like the OAKLAND COLISEUM. RIP
Esp the way Cosell used to pronounce it on MNF.
Even though I wasn't a big Raiders' fan, he was my favorite 70's qb.
Snake was so tough and talented.
A guy anyone would play as hard as possible for.
Such a Big Men, My Childhood HERO....Thanks for all the Memorys MR STABLER...GOD BLESS YOU.
Greatest Raider ever.
Stabler was a great storyteller. I could of listened to him all night over some cold ones. The man who looked over the playbook under the light of the jukebox. Players were built different.
Truly one of the coolest cats on the planet. Thanks Snake for all the memories and the cool stories. I still wear my silver n black #12 Stabler jersey. The 60's, 70's and early 80's, What a great time to be a part of...😉
What a great storyteller! Who'd have thought?
Living Legend. RIP Snake. I remember you well (I was born/raised in Alameda - Raiders Headquarters & training camp 1970)
Snake was one of a kind. I shook his hand once at the Flora-Bama, forget the year...early 90s. Mullet toss. If you never been to one do yourself a favor, it's a good time. Being a Bama fan, I've always held him in high regard. Never saw him play at Bama seeing as how I wasn't born til '72. He was a great one...college and pro. RTR
The face of the 70s Raiders, if you missed the 70s Raiders you missed it. Todays players AND fans can’t hold a candle to the ones back then
Man you got that right. Even though I'm from Ohio and was a super browns fan, when cleveland wasn't playing if the raiders was playing that's where my TV went ! Stabler, blanda, branch, Casper, Freddie biletnikoff, Lester hayes. Damn those were the days ! Grass fields, less penalties, no replays no gloves lastly most players hated the other teams. No hugs after games.
Love hearing Snake talk. Reminds me of when I was a boy and listening to him and Eli call the games
I was a rookie QB drafted by the Raiders in '75...Kenny was a great mentor to younger players, especially the QB's Oakland drafted that year... He loaned me his car one night during training camp in Santa Rosa so David Humm (QB) and I could "run the gauntlet" in Santa Rosa...he was the real deal...Down to Earth...and the best QB of his generation IMO...
The Snake could tell some stories. I miss my old Raider family !
