- Tonight I'm taking a look at Linda Ronstadt, this time with her guitar playing being the focus! (*Linda's version was actually released in 1975, recorded in 1974)

Linda was courageous. She sang Mexican , she did Broadway, she did American standards by Nelson Riddle. Dolly Parton said there was nothing she could not sing. All when the record companies said this will ruin your career. Linda did not care. She is a national treasure.
The first night she performed live with Nelson Riddle and his orchestra was at the Greek theater, an outdoor theater. I had tried for years to get to see her live but she always sold out. The first night at the Greek, it rained cats and dogs and I had gone there to buy tickets for another night; but, they let me and my friend in for free and we sat in the rain, no raincoat, not umbrella, nothing. Got soaked and loved it. "Whats new" was amazing.
That is the very definition of an artist they must challenge themselves for the pure joy of creativity.
The voice, the playing is pure gold
she did all those genres cuz her talent was Big!
She sang light opera in Gilbert & Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance" - brilliantly.
There is nothing Linda couldn't sing. Her talent effortless. She was the first concert I went to, and I believe it was in 1974-75. Totally captivating. Shame we can't have her voice and ability anymore.
Linda, who was key in the Eagle's existence, is such a magnificent, passionate singer and musician!
People don't realize Linda covering somewhat unknown artists songs helped kick off careers - she did Hasten Down the Wind, Carmelita, and Poor, Poor Pitiful Me by Warren Zevon and songs by Karla Bonoff that got them noticed - Warren Zevon says that during the intro to Hasten Down the Wind on Stand in the Fire. Always humble and generous
Just listened to her version of Hasten Down the Wind live in Germany - gave me chills - similar to Gram Parsons, they are able to sing from the heart in a way that you can feel the raw emotion. There is also a video of Linda opening a show with Lose Again where she had to wipe the tears from her face.

@Ash Murdoch - I saw Dolly Parton (no slouch herself) in a documentary say that Ronstadt was "the best female singer ever and that includes Barbra Streisand".

Jimmy Page on here as she does her best. I don't believe she put her all into her Guitar playing praticing. Then again she got by wonderfully,as here beautiful voice could down out a train wreck. She would just sweetly sing over it. Seen her in 1978 I was 15. And what a Summer to remember. I had a huge crush on her and some of my older friends knew it. My dear Friend Peter got tickets he was 18 and even paid for the tickets ,wanting no money. I didn't at the time know she played Guitar. And to see her standing there in a White Halter top shirt or Blouse. And Dungees. With very decent seats, I fell in love with Linda Ronstadt. Lol. Thanks to my friend Peter Rabias whom lives on the other side of the U.S. I'll never forget that Summer ,and my girlfriend Kathy whom got that shirt because I liked it,and she knew I blabbed about this Concert and that shirt that I miss seeing back in the day. Sorry to go on... But I just had a flush of great memories and an Artist I true sorely miss not being able to sing better then the Birds in the trees. Thanks Sam! And Fil as always you Rock! Okay... there is so much beauty in every one of Linda Ronstadts performances.. like the absolute artist she is, she supplies all of her music from deep inside herself..she lives and feels every song she graces us with. This song has so much personal sorrow attached for me that even at 70 years old I still am not able to listen without sobbing like a child. Thank you for featuring this particular song by a singer I adore. I'm so lucky to have grown up in this generation of musicians.

she recently said she sings with her immediate family, like they always have. Glad she can.
Parkinson's is a hellous disease. My friend Rosie suffers from it. Luckily it affected her later in life.
When Linda sings with her immediate family, she still sounds better than me.
My father had Parkinson's. It's a horrible disease and I hate it.

When you had to be able to sing if you were going to sing. Her voice is just beautiful on everything she has done.
When you take me back to the 60's and 70's with your videos I feel so very privileged to have been a teenager in the 60's and young adult in the 70's. What amazing music was such an integral part of our fabulous young years. It really was 'the good old days". Linda was my favourite female artist. Emmylou and Rita Coolidge were also great.

I love the subtle aspects to the playing that you pick out, like the finger adjustment on the fret. Fil, I am so glad I literally stumbled on one of your analysis videos only a couple of weeks ago. Since then, I have seen many of them, and each one I learn something new. I am a classically trained musician (flute), and am loving the exposure to the different genres and artists I would not otherwise bothered with. Keep these up - your perspectives are MUCH appreciated. Love, love, love these!

Bit of a sweeping statement there Carla. I have been a loyal (British) fan since 1972. I adore the lady, and it saddens me greatly that she can no longer sing due to Parkinson's disease .
I am British. We were being blown away by great pop & rock in the late 70s & early 80s, lots of competition then. Love Linda though!

I can't imagine Linda without a guitar. When I see someone singing with an acoustic guitar, I know they will be great storytellers. Its like they feel the lyrics through the guitar and vice versa. Top analysis, rawk Fil.

Thank you for all of this. You are a great "credit giver", pointing out things about artists that most non-musicians would probably not appreciate. I am so impressed by one MORE thing Linda Ronstadt did in her astounding musical journey. I've sung and played finger-picking guitar for most of my life, but I know I could never execute a continuous melody through an entire song while singing, as she does nearly flawlessly here. She is a great perfectionist, and was always so hard on herself in any interview I've ever seen.

Great analysis, Fil. I never knew Linda could play as sweetly as she sang. The smile on your face says it all: you are in love with her and her music. A person would have to be heartless not to adore her.
I’ve always been a Linda Ronstadt fan, what an amazing artist. Everyone loved her beautiful vocals, but people did tend to overlook her guitar playing. A brilliant talent indeed.

Love the smile on his face as he watches but even moreso I love the fact that he can appreciate and critique music from a different generation. Most of the "analysis" videos I see from younger people are of the younger artists. I get that; it's their world now but every musician worth his/her salt can tell you not only who influenced them directly but also what they appreciate in other musicians. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Omg am just blown away. I was a massive fan of Linda Ronstadt in the 70s and later in the 80s. I did not see her in concert until the 80s when she was into her sort of new wave rock phase , and I’m truly embarrassed to say that I did not know that she played guitar! Not only played but was terrific at it. I wish I had been able to see her live back in the 70s. And also, why doesn’t anyone play pedal steel guitar anymore? I absolutely love it and so many of the bands used it in the 70s but you don’t seem to hear it much anymore. Again thank you for the wonderful musical education. I’ve always wanted to learn to play guitar, but it sounds a bit complicated LOL. 🤟

Right on Fil. The hardest part of learning fingerstyle is the development of an independent thumb. Takes endless repetition to make it subconscious. Linda is wonderful as usual
I saw her back in her heyday. She put on a great show. Very understated performer who avoids the hysterics of today’s singers. Sublime.
I came for the singing - the woman simply melts me. Really appreciate your assessment of her playing. Like you said, it's very easy to look past it with her vocal skills. To be able to just stand there in the spotlight with her guitar and be that exposed both musically and vocally - it's a simple, elegant and amazing performance. Thank you for this one.

"Perhaps igniting the Brktish Invasion"? Hell, so many very successful European great rockers said that their inspiration came from Buddy Holly & other U.S. acts, particularly the southern blues. Heck, even The Beatles said their name was inspired by Buddy Holly and his back-up band The Crickets.

Good video! I learned that song from her back in the 70's, and used to play it with my sister singing. Linda Rondstat was so Hot back in the 70's, a beautiful talented woman indeed.

Really fun for those of us well ensconced in middle age to revisit how good these artists really were and that we did not recognize their real skill when we were listening to them "back then" as teenagers. Fil has mentioned how good they were and how many of us are only realizing this in hindsight.

Fil, thanks for giving us another look at Linda, featuring her guitar playing here. Pausing the video to explain some of the technicalities with her playing, then showing the rest of the video was very educational! I didn’t know this was a Paul Anka song, nor his generosity towards Buddy Holly’s widow. I remember my mom picking me up, as a toddler, and dancing around the room when Paul Anka’s song, Diana, would play on the radio. I much preferred his early music over his later works. Warm and fuzzy memories. 🙂👍🏼

I remember this song from that time, Linda had a lot of smash hits, she is/was a great artist, too bad she isn't performing anymore.. Great analysis!
Saw her several times in concert and she sounded just like the record. She had such a phenomenal voice, she never knew her good she really was, heard her say she never listened to herself because she would think maybe I should have done this or that, very critical of herself.

I went to see it, at the movie theater over last summer. Twice. Loved it, totally enjoyable film. Linda's amazing.
I remember my dad playing a Linda Ronstadt record for me when I was young and I was completely blown away by her voice! She is such a supremely talented lady and one of the first women to sell out huge arenas. I always love your analysis videos! Having grown up listening to Linda you're right, her vocals tend to be all that people hear. Maybe because they were so incredible ;-) Nice job bringing her playing out.
Especially in the 70s, every guy I knew was in love with the gorgeous dark-eyed girl who could sing like an angel. She was so beautiful that it was heartbreaking. With ALL of my friends, it was either Linda Ronstadt or Susan Dey...or BOTH, like me! Also, as an aside, Linda was of Hispanic ancestry--thus her album "Canciones de Mi Padre" (Songs of My Father, or My Father's Songs)--and in Spanish, "Linda" means "Beautiful."

She could sing the old Manhattan Yellow Pages phone book and make it great. She always had the BEST back-up musicians, too. Songwriters always wanted to have Linda cover their songs, Few could ever do it better! Such a shame illness robbed her, and the world of her superb voice. Anka wrote a ton of hit songs. He's one of those 'he wrote that?' songwriters.

I'd love to hear your take on Linda Rohndstadt's original 1968 version of "Different Drum", when she was with the Stone Ponies. With much less vocal training than she got later at that time, she delivered one of the most compelling vocal performances I've ever heard.
She added so much more emotion to this Buddy Holly classic, it hits me hard. Knowing that she lost her talent to Parkinson's disease adds even more to it for me, since I've been diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's 10 years ago.
I did not know that it would be possible to appreciate Linda Ronstadt more than I already do but your concise analysis of her seasoned and skilled guitar playing really did the trick. Thank you for making one of my favorite song performances of hers even better

Never forget the first time I heard or saw Linda. She was just starting to get noticed. She was on the Mike Douglas talk show on tv.
She came out with her bohemian look and she was barefoot. Unheard of in tv, for any performer. As alway, great singing.
