    Definitely better constructed than my 1970s Avanti AV-170 Sigma 5/8.
    One note of advice, I drilled 4 holes in a washer which fit tightly over the threads of the SO-239 through which I threaded & epoxied 2 loops of kevlar kite string wrapped around the coax at 4" and 8" down the casing to take strain from the weight of the coax from the connector.
    I thought it was a minor disappointment they never added some sort of strain relief cable to the inner base designed to attach to the coax.

      +ADOMITUS OH, thank you again. The TAGRA BT210 isn't more in the height. It was broken in a big storm at April 2012. Now I've an original SHAKESPEARE 176-Stile (SUPER BIG STICK) vertical coaxial Dipole on the mast. This stick works not bad... Best 73's to you...

    Hello David. Mny Thanks for the visit. I think, the golden super PENETRATOR from hy-gain, is easier to install, because the koaxial cable to the BT-210 must go into the mast-tube... 73's de Stefan..

    RE: TheZeke19744 years ago,
    "Reminds me of my Avanti Sigma 5/8 i have laying out back of the shed. LOL"
    Except your AV-170 Simga II 5/8 measures 22' 4" from the top ring connection to the tip, making it a TRUE 11m 5/8, and considerably longer than this or the MacoV5/8.

      @SWIZZRADIOS  Před 8 lety

      +Aerial Heights Yes of course, it's a real 5/8 wave antenna with a height of about 6.8 mtrs., like the PENETRATOR 500. Happy airwaves to you..

    • @adomitus6871
      @adomitus6871 Před 8 lety

      +SWIZZRADIOS - Not so.
      Actually Aerial Heights has a good point, unless you are using it as a 5/8 wave on 28.372mhz.
      According to the given measurement of the radiator (6530mm/ 260" electrically) this would be a true 5/8 of a 416" full wavelength, which comes out to 28.372mhz.
      It is as are many other so-called 5/8 waves, about a foot short of a true 5/8, but matched for probably somewhere around 27.730mhz.
      No doubt a competent performer, although too short to be compared directly with a 27.0mhz-tuned original 22' 6" Penetrator-500 true 5/8 radiator, nor a 27.110mhz-tuned 22' 5" Avanti AV-170 Sigma II 5/8, true 5/8 radiator.
      You must multiply the calculated .625 wavelength radiator by the velocity factor of aluminum in air of .9979, and subtract the average circumference of the radiator of approx 2.5" in order to calculate the correct mechanical length electrically equal to a true 5/8.

    A point 64 wave is the longest and most efficient single radiator, there is no 7/8 wave antenna. Above .64 the pattern distorts.

      I am currently working on transforming a 5/8 wave Maco V5000 into a .64 wave. I'll let you know how it comes out. I have a photo of the pattern of 5/8 wave, point 64 wave and the pattern above point 64 wave.

      Figure (A) The black vertical line represents the antenna. In this case, a 5/8 wave. We are looking at it from the side. The GOLD color area represents the radiating pattern of the RF signal. Note how it stretches outward
      towards the horizon.
      Figure (B) represents a .64 wave antenna. The gold area is the pattern of the 5/8 wave, and the red area represents the extended pattern outwards of the .64 antennas pattern.
      Figure (C) Represents any wavelength OVER a .64. As the wavelength goes over the .64 maximum, the radiating pattern (Shown as BLUE) begins to extend more upwards and downwards, but decreases going outwards. This lowers the signals going out and coming in from greater distances. The gold and red areas behind the blue, shows the original pattern of the 5/8 and .64 wave antennas. It also shows how much signal strength was lost by going over the .64 wavelength maximum for good radiating patterns. As the length of the antenna gets even longer, the blue area will extend higher and lower, and decrease even more going outward towards the horizon. At a full 1.0 wavelength, the blue area would look like a football standing on one tip. Very little RF would radiate off the sides. Most of the RF would be lost to the sky and the ground.
      In other words, the .64 wave is the most efficient length you can have for any transmitting antenna on any frequency. Yes the .64 wave also needs a matching coil network to correct the impedance mismatch. But because of the extra length of the main element, the coil uses less windings. Less windings means less power loss and more RF to the main element. Less power loss and a greater radiating pattern. It's a win - win situation.

      @@dietrichzumwald4777I'm wondering how well your build turned out?
      I've kind of given up on 5/8 wave (.64) antennas due to the donut of dead area around 30 miles out - due to the upper lobe reflecting on the D-layer and coming back down, cancelling the lower lobe energy, usually about 25-35 miles out.
      I prefer my home-built (home-brew?) 46' dual polarization omni. - I'm seeing about 2 s-units meter strength over the Penetrator 500.
      There are ways of making taller then .64 antennas which do not phase poorly and hence have greater gain than even a .64.

  • @dietrichzumwald4777
    @dietrichzumwald4777 Před 7 lety +1

    The proper terminology is 73' not 73's - Seven Three originated with CW operators, 73 means best wishes and was sent at the end of a transmission to extending best wishes to the operator on the other end of a QSO, so then if we extrapolate from that 73's (plural) it would mean, best wishes-es

      Easter is actually Ishtar and IF it falls upon "the actual Christian Holiday" of the resurrection, the Pope will hold Easter off for one week. That particular holiday is a pagan holiday
