  • Ever heard of Neodymium? It’s one of the most essential elements that nobody talks about. Without it, our EV wouldn’t drive, our phones wouldn’t work and our wind turbines wouldn’t generate energy. This is a story of a rare earth metal that has many countries scrambling.

    We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world - and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

    There are a lot of motors and generators which don't need any magnet. Indeed you can create even stronger magnetic fields with electricity. Howerver neodymium magnet are cheap enough to still be used.

    • @mozillaproxima4941

      Sm-Co (BH)max[MGOe] about 35 (BH)max[kJm-3] about 240 NdFeB about 55 and 440 respectively. FeN ( theoretical ) roughly ×2 of strongest NdFeB

    • @DWPlanetA
      @DWPlanetA  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Neodymium magnets have exceptional strength, but some limitations to their temperature stability and corrosion resistance. Cobalt-Samarium magnets are especially relevant when higher temperature resistance is critical. 🔥

    Don’t these super strong magnets also power things like high speed rail such as maglev tech?

    • @wizz1358
      @wizz1358 Před 5 měsíci +1

      Nope! For maglev regular magnets (even rare Earth's ones) are not strong enough, you need super conductors, which are made from crazy alloys and cooled down to cooler than liquid nitrogen.
      We use the same technology on the CT scanners, they use an alloy that is cooled to 2 degrees above absolute zero using liquid helium so they can generate a magnetic field SUPER strong so they can read the electric currents inside your head and create a 3D map

    • @DWPlanetA
      @DWPlanetA  Před 4 měsíci

      Hey there! For maglev trains, either electromagnets are used but also rare earth permanent magnets such as neodymium iron boron permanent magnets.

    Good remember magnet is a specific iron oxide with three oxygen and two iron, Fe2O3, different from the commun rust, a simple iron corrosion, FeO, but with a big property difference like useful magnetism and useless rust. I mean in chemistry, only a little difference like numbers of atoms in a molecule is enough for a great difference of property like neodymiun magnet alloy....

    Neodymium is not that rare. But mining and refining it is very environmentally damaging and toxic. Environment regulation of China is very weak, so China can dominate the world neodymium market. Such mining are expensive in other nations due to strict environmental regulation.
