- In this video, I discuss how to use the reins on a horse. If you are a beginner or even an advanced rider I hope you find some valuable information.
I start by discussing the correct rein length. This is important to know as it can positively or negatively affect how effective your reins are when communicating different things to your horse.
Next, I cover the two most common ways that I use my reins. These are the opening rein and direct rein. Each one will be used at different times depending on how your horse reacts to your seat. To illustrate this I demonstrate using the opening rein to turn and also using a direct rein.

Just started learning . 8th lesson today in rein control. Scary moments. The horse bucked . Was very twitchy and I felt very scared. Once lost the reins when the horse put its head down. Thankfully it was stationary. Scared.

I really like your way of presenting the teaching method, like I can quickly understand based on the "pictures" you draw, and you clearly show how your legs/hands are moving. Most videos i've watched they just talk and i don't know what they really mean until someone demonstrate it
And the instructor is supposed to be working for You. IMHO, a different instructor might be worth checking into.

I love your videos. I learn by visual demonstration and thorough explanation. My instructor talks too fast and doesn’t take the necessary time for me to really get something. As a result, I viewed myself as a slow learner and get confused when she explains something to me. I am 62 and started taking lessons 4 years ago. I now own a POA and ride Western. You are up there among my favorites.

This is a helpful shot for those just starting to ride in an English style but I am one of those who rides in a western style and we use reins slightly different in fact many of us western riders opt to not use a bit at all so direct pressure and neck reining air taught to is as beginners...all the other sides are pretty much the same

Yes! Thank you! This was a simple and direct visual explanation for how and when to use these different rein techniques! Much appreciated! Long time neck reining western rider, gone English direct reining, struggle with contact on their mouth and how to freaking steer! I end up with loose reins, that bang on the bit as her head moves, and can’t find that sweet spot, let alone steer. So this was simple and helpful. 🥰

I am starting to retrain an OTTB and am using a bitless bridle since he has nerve damage to his mouth from racing (teeth have been checked by vet and dentist). I have been using your techniques and love your demonstrations. Would love to see you try a bitless bridle in a video-I have used them on a forward TB and a seasoned QH and both respect the bitless readily. Bitless is much more forgiving for those who tend to be heavy-handed--it helps the rider understand that they don't need to be--the horse adapts quickly!

You are so clear , helpful and interesting. Not many instructors actually go through the fundamentals of how to use what , when and where when learning to ride. You are exactlty the type of person and instructor I would have loved to have had lessons from years ago when I was learning. Instead I had either those who didn't teach much at all and the last was so rude and aggressive to the class many gave it away including me.

Great video! I've struggled with horses falling out, this was such a clear explanation of when using the open rein is beneficial! I'm working on slowing down a hot sensitive horse. She gets bored quickly, so I'm looking for techniques to help her settle down and focus. A video would be great!

I’m working on indirect rein - and bending. I am looking for a bit more of propulsion as my my horseback and I circle. I like what you said about the “channel” - info on getting your horse straight, too.
I’m also curious about “kneeling” in the saddle to give weight and leg cues.

I love your videos, you have some of the best informational content, and you have a very friendly, encouraging vibe- I would love for you to go more in depth on some topics, like this one, maybe something more about contact, how to achieve it and maintain it? I am struggling with that, I try very hard to have soft hands, to the point where I give the contact away- I am finally keeping my fingers closed now, but my instructor demonstrated what she thinks is the right amount of contact, and it is FAR HEAVIER than what I had thought, and what you described at the beginning of this video looks like what I try to do, but in my lesson yesterday she said I wasn't keeping him on the rein, and like I said, what she demonstrated seemed very overbearing and heavy! The horse I ride seems to prefer the way I do it, too, but that doesn't always mean it is the right way! That is us in my user photo, if the photo is big enough to critique, I welcome any constructive feedback!

Thank you so much for your positive feedback and kind words❤️ Having a soft elastic and consistent contact can be a difficult thing to achieve and maintain. I believe there are several things that contribute to the consistency of your contact including your balance as well as your horse’s balance. This is a topic that is difficult to describe and would be more easily understood with visuals so I will plan to do a future video this year covering it🐴

They are just PSofSWEDEN regular leather Dressage reins. I wrapped purple masking tape around them to make them more visible:)

My instructor is telling me to technically lift my hand for steering. I did the opening rein for the longest time and she says I’m pulling.. so I can’t do the way I’m used to which makes me so confused when trying
Hi...what do you mean by "close left leg"?
I haven't ridden a horse in about 5 years. I have lost all memory of every single thing about caring for horses and riding them. I remember when I first started, my legs were so tiny, I had to use my whole legs to kick the horse, and it took a lot of practice to use only the lower half.
I always have trouble with my rein length- they’re usually much too long and I don’t realize it until I go to use them. When I shorten them, I feel like I’m tugging so I lose the bend in my elbows. 🤦🏼♀️
I'm having trouble with keeping my shoulders back and relaxing when I canter. Any tips ?

I have a question, I’m taking horse back riding lesson since last august and i have one thing that keeps happening and I don’t know how to fix.
