Gorgeous playing and respect to Tore for showing exactly where a lot of us are at right now.
Wow, a tab for the chordal work Ariel does starting at 17:45 would be spectacular. Such a rootsy vintage sound. Killer playing as usual.
6:14- That look at the camera says it all
Yeah I caught that too😂
pro tip: you can watch movies at Kaldrostream. Me and my gf have been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Walker Miller Yea, been watching on kaldrostream for since december myself :)
@Walker Miller Yup, have been using kaldrostream for since december myself =)
I discovered Ariel because I bought his signature slide lol. Fits like a glove. Plus it's brass.
Wow Tor you gave us one of your best videos here! That fingering below the slide technique is killer. Also the idea of practicing scales on one string and playing with the tip. Mange Tak!!
I’ve been to Ariel’s concert and his sound is amazing!!!!!!!
From 17:37 or so on is incredible - sounds like a pedal steel. I don't know other slide players who do that, and it's gorgeous. Also live those single string whining tones, reminds me of Derek Trucks. All just learning chords and scales with slide and fingers, whatever tuning. Awesome lesson.
10:45 - 11:01: I’d never thought of vibrato that way before! “You can only go sharp, not flat”. Seems so obvious now but this is why I love listening to musicians hang out and shoot-the-shit; you learn *so much* and pick up on all these neat tricks and tips.
*SO MANY* quality moments throughout this video, too many to list. Kudos to Tore for asking all the right questions and chasing down the minute details of Ariel’s techniques. And kudos to Ariel (my current favourite guitarist on the planet) for sharing his secrets and depth of knowledge.
I’ve been playing seriously for over 25 years (mostly acoustic fingerpicking, electric rhythm, some lead), recently took up slide as a challenge, bring something new to the game, etc. see if in fact you can teach this old dog a new trick. I learned so much from this conversation. Superb video, gentlemen. Cheers!
.
This is excellent. Incredibly useful and laid back.
Well done, Tore!
.
Thank you both for your time.♥️🏁👍👍
Really cool! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Note isolation and muting techniques with the right hand are the most important focus learning slide. Great Video.
Always wondered how to properly do this!!
I play slide on 9 - 46 strings. Yeah. Too light. But I’ve got used to it. I play standard tuning and go back and forth fretting with fingers then slide. Top tips from a master here.
Helpful seeing the beginner and pro side by side. It's also about body position. Lowering your fret hand's shoulder and elbow gives the proper reach and avoids fretting out. Freeze the video at 10:06 and compare the two. You can see Tor is sitting much more upright and now has to force his wrist down around the neck. Ariel's arm cradles around the neck. Perfect comparison. Nice informative video, thanks guys.
I find P-90-style pups work great for my slide tone (Tweed amps and fuzz pedals!!). I have a dedicated slide guitar, Jazzmaster copy with Ernie Ball 11-52s.
My slide goes on my pinky - I use a transparent glass/perspex slide that is just a *little* loose on the finger so I can adjust. I also have a metal slide but I like to be able to see through the slide to the neck.
WOW, Great Video Lesson on Slide, and I totally related to Tore as just getting into Slide and Ariel's explaining was spot on, learned lots about slide today. Thanks guys
Thanks, Bob 🙂
Very nice and informative lesson - thanks!
this is a great video by the way. i think we can all agree on that. thank you so much.
This is gold...thanks so much
Wow, this is a solid video for improving slide skills
Helpful tips. Thanks.
This is super helpful, guys! I'm getting serious about my slide playing and these are some great tips from a master. Thanks.
Thanks, Dave!
Great idea for a vid, Tor. Thx!!
That part at 17:50 is unreal. Great playing by Ariel
Very informative! Please do more videos like this! I also like the transparency that was shown as well.
Ariel said he likes to do it right on the tip.
And that subtle eye-fuck to the camera... classy haha.
Nice. I love how his guitar sounds like it's filmed in black and white.
Stoned?
That look at 6:14 has me creasing "You're right on the tip" ;)
Mto top os vídeos da TC electronics. Não perco nenhum. Abraços e bends
You need to mute both behind the slide and with the right hand: behind to dampen string "jangle," and with the right hand to stop notes from harmonically bleeding into subsequently played notes. Behind the slide is easy enough, but the right-hand technique definitely takes practice.
Sonny Landreth is good to watch for right hand dampening.
Life hack: instead of paying for lessons like a chump, start your own international effects manufacturing company and get free lessons from professionals of your choosing!
Dammit, you're on to us, Charles! 😅😅
Our very own Russel Brand
Respectfully disagree with the comment that the fingers behind the slide do nothing. They dampen the transients and solidify the intended notes. (Much easier to demonstrate than describe). But hey, to each their own. Ariel’s a badass so who am I to judge
I'd agree but it doesn't do as much as muting with your right hand. I tend to lift the trail fingers to increase the sustain when holding a note or vibrato
Great Guitar Stuff
You are 1000% correct and yes, go ahead and judge. If this guy ever played a pedal steel or lap steel or resonators etc. he would realize just how sloppy his playing sounds without "DAMPING". That term is used in ALL THINGS ABOUT SLIDE because it is pretty much rule number one. You can do YOUR THING on so many things and that makes you.....you. But, for him to TEACH that damping is wrong is where he REALLY screwed the pooch on this one.
I'd guess he mutes behind the slide more than he thinks with all the fingering he's got going on back there. I also disagree with his one string is best approach, but it works for him and he's great.
Robert Hedrick one string really depends on what sound you’re going for. If you want that Derek trucks feel that s a great approach but Duane Allman uses more boxes to get that harmonica sound. I dig them both.
Groovy Music Lessons
I am guessing he just misspoke as he is dampening with his ring finger a lot of the time. Ariel does in fact play pedal steel so I’m sure he understands the mechanics involved. There may have also been a miscommunication as the interviewer seems to imply he uses all of the fingers behind the slide to “mute”.
Great lesson! What pedals were you using?
Tore! Part of your LP is missing!
Seriously though, excellent vid. Now to give it a try, apologies in advance to the neighbours...
That is a rather extreme way to deal with a overly heavy Les Paul.
It's his guitar strap, guys! 😆
Sounds much better if you DO mute behind the string in my opinion. And glass on electric sounds much better to me too.
Me too, the strings behind the slide do make noise.
To YOU.
Muting with the right works for me (mostly because i can't mute with left!). I like the glass slide not for tone but because I like to be able to see through the slide to the fretboard
Is there a newsletter from TC we can sign up to?
Try here: facebook.com/tcelectronic/app/161293083930879/?ref=page_internal
By the way. Try playing in 5-7-12 fret. Youll get a lot of noise to mute from behind the strings.
Which pickup in the bridge Ariel? Pls reply
When it comes to sliding I prefer a Lap Steel. Totally different instrument but works and sounds just so much better
me too. i prefer to lay the guitar on my lap and play lap-style. feels more natural to me and i have more control over the sound. rock on and on.
I play, and own regular guitars, acoustic and electric, setup for slide in Open D/E, Open G/A and Standard, squareneck Dobro (usually in bluegrass G), several Lapsteels, usually tuned to D, and a Weissenborn in D as well. I think there are pros and cons to each, all can be beautiful, and/or powerful, and each will present character building challenges that will make you appreciate it all the more. The singing is the thing, instruments that can sing like a human voice are usually considered more beautiful (if played well), AND never forget the power of a specialty.
I have this Pinky Brass Rockslide that Ariel uses and I get quite a lot of static noise upon touching the strings, is there a way to get rid of that.
I don't know if you still need this information, but noise like this is usually a sign of an unshielded guitar.
Amazing player but at 19:00 when he switches guitar the low action shows. Unfortunately having a properly setup guitar for slide makes a lot of difference even to pros like him. Rarely seen anyone play slide in std tuning so well as this guy.
In terms of muting I think it’s good to mute with the slide hand too but hey...
I'm open D, all day every day. I've tried all manner of other open tunings but my instincts for open D are just too honed in, and everything else I'm too lazy to get to know, now.
I play pretty much exclusively in open E but shifting to D is really easy, same licks. I just started in Open E and prefer the higher tension
I actually use standard quite a lot, or open D, open G.
I'm trying to learn to finger behind the slide and it's killing me. Action is high, heavyish strings, and it's still nearly impossible. I think I need to learn to have a flatter pressure on the strings with the slide than I do. Never noticed that until now.
There is an optimal string height that makes playing behind the glass MUCH easier, and both ends of the guitar need to be tweaked usually (bridge and nut). Nothing with slide, or steel variants, comes overnight, so as Archie Bunker said "patience is a virgin" :) Landreth covers this in one of his lesson videos, online.
After watching that.....I realize how crap I am at guitar....🤣
What on earth happened to his Les Paul!
Dang that slide is singing
I take more of a middle aged son house approach😆
@2:14 - interesting...
Hope your show us your progress learning slide in future videos! Share your experiance in gaining more time sliding. look into Rockslides www.therockslide.com/ for a better quality slide!
that look.... on the tip 6:14 #dead
Oh, and JOEY LANDRETH.
6:11 ... HAHAHA

is this video about how to play slide when ariel posen is there? or how ariel posen plays slide guitar?
Both! 😅
:) \m/
I have to go against what you said about raising the action. No need to. If you can play you play any guitar anytime. No problems. You dont press down on the slide. Only use the weight of the slide and nothing more. Thats more than enough.
ok, my 2 cents... it seems to me he is damping with his ring finger behind the slide. just sayin...
Ever hear of a guy named Duane Allman?
Just wanted to see what you would say. George Harrison was the greatest slide player who ever lived. Nobody (especially you), come close to his feel, touch, tone, etc.
Try listening to the master, and humble yourself. He’s been my slide influence nearly 40 years.
Joe Sasser joe there are so many ways to express with a slide that to put a “greatest” sign on one player would certainly make George grimace! Sky dog? Sonny Landreth? George’s friend Eric? Bonnie Raitt can make you cry for mercy! Rory Gallagher could loosen your teeth (and every women in the room)! Could just keep going here but review the wiki list
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_slide_guitarists
BTW his style using his three open fingers does mute behind the slide by adding finger picked notes.
Richard Foulkes Even Eric says George was the best. Bonnie can’t hold George’s drink. The rest, I’ve never heard of, so how great are they. You’re just too young, haven’t lived long enough.
Ry Cooder is pretty good. Just sayin'. Johnny Winter. Robert Johnson. Lowell George.
George was a massive fan of Cooder and personally learnt tips from him. Keltner talks in interviews about George always asking after Cooder. George is one of my top players too as he has a unique & distinctive way with buckets of soul 👍. We're lucky to have so many past & present players to enjoy and take inspiration from. You heard his slide solo on 'The bluest blue' by Alvin Lee?
All the best to you-
