Riding Behind Reading and Northern

  • On May 25th, 2024, I took my first mainline ride behind Reading and Northern #2102 on the first Iron Horse Ramble of 2024! This excursion departed Reading Outer Station and traversed north to Jim Thorpe, where we had about a three-hour layover before re-boarding the train to return to Reading. This route has been the traditional route for Reading and Northern's steam excursions, and the route of every Iron Horse Ramble up to this point. However, this was the only Iron Horse Ramble of 2024 to travel this route, as 2102 will now begin to travel to other points along Reading and Northern's system (More details below).
This ride was really awesome, as both my family who joined me and myself had an excellent time! Hearing #2102 working hard on a 15-car excursion, especially climbing the grade out of Tamaqua and up Hometown Hill, was really incredible! Furthermore, Jim Thorpe is truly a historic and scenic town with a LOT to do. Unfortunately, I didn't get to do a ton during my visit, however, I was able to visit the Asa Packer Museum, which was very interesting and very well-preserved. Regardless, I definitely recommend visiting Reading and Northern's website at www.rbmnrr-passenger.com/ to look into excursion tickets if you would like to ride behind 2102 yourself!
As I had mentioned, 2102 will now be traveling to other points on the Reading and Northern. Specifically, on June 22nd, 2024, 2102 will be departing from Reading and Northern's new Nesquehoning Campus for Tunkhannok, PA to join the celebration of the town's 43rd Annual Founder's Day Festival! While this trip is sold out, there are still tickets available for a similar ramble departing from Nesquehoning on August 17th, 2024, which will travel to Pittston, PA for the annual Tomato Festival. An identical trip will depart the following day, August 18th, with the Reading and Northern F-units, and there will also be diesel-powered excursions from Nesquehoning to Tunkhannok departing on July 27th and September 7th. Be sure to visit Reading and Northern's website for more details and to purchase tickets!
Additionally, you may notice a certain foamer throughout my ride, and that would be my good friend ‪@JamieMakin‬ who chased this ramble and joined me for a cab tour of 2102 in Jim Thorpe! Be sure to visit her channel to see her chase of this excursion!
Lastly, I know this is a longer video, but I wanted to do my best to document the full experience of riding behind 2102. The actual ride in total is anywhere from four to five hours! I specifically focused on key locations along the route, as well as points when the engine was really working hard on the return trip. Regardless, I hope you enjoy a day with 2102!

Absolutely amazing footage. Looks like it was a wonderful ride that day. While watching this, I couldn't help but also think about the servicemen that 2102 or her sister engines pulled on troop trains during the Korean War (some older gentlemen online have shared some stories and info about this, it was apparently the main passenger duty assigned to the Reading T-1 class during the 1950s). Safe to say those fellas likely had a much more solemn journey than today's tourists. Thanks for posting this!

Awesome, can’t wait for my ride this Saturday. My Dad and I are riding in the NEW “Schuylkill River” Pullman! This summer actually celebrates the “1 year anniversary” of an article I did on the Parlor Car during last year’s Reading to Jim Thorpe Ramble to feature in the “Pennsylvania Live Steamers” gazette which I was thrilled to share with RBMN for making this article happen. My Dad and I originally had tickets for the King Coal observation lounge car but then I was personally reached out by RBMN asking if we wanted to upgrade to the Parlor Car. On top of that my Dad and I got to walkthrough Andy’s private Car 30 “Glen Onoko Falls” so that was an added bonus making it a very memorable ride that I’ll never forget. Can’t wait for this Saturday! Promised my friends at RBMN that I would let them know what my Dad and I think of the new Pullman we will be riding in from Nesquehoning to Tunkhannock. Hope you’ll be out chasing!🚂😊

@@PANortheasternRailfanthanks, be sure to ask your pal Jamie Makin about me next time you see her. We got to meet in person last fall in Pittston as she printed out my dome car tickets during the Fall Foliage to Jim Thorpe. She’s seen my article and thought that it was very well written and liked the photos I included. She thought that I nailed every detail of the Parlor Car spot on. The Parlor Car is my personal favorite to ride in!

Howdy Colin. Joe from Binghamton here. I hope all goes well. This video is phenomenal!
Even though I loved being back in the parlor car, I lamented that it was nearly impossible to get a good glimpse of 2102 while we were underway. There were just so many cars in the consist and the parlor car was next to last.
Your video was the next best thing to being closer to the action. I watched it on the big screen and blasted the audio through my stereo. Pure delight!!
Also, Jamie's DJI recommendation was spot on - what a cool action cam! The footage where both DJIs were pointed at each other was priceless! :)

Hi Joe! I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the video! And I hope your stereo system survived lol, there were some points where 2102 was really really loud. One day I’d like to ride in that Parlor car, but I’ll probably only do it behind a diesel for the reason you mentioned about being far away from the steam engine. Glad to hear you had a nice time though regardless! And yes, it was quite the meet for both Jamie’s and my camera lol
