    M wife saw this video. Guess what? She wants me to piece together a 4x8 butcher block island countertop to replace our old sad one that has a sink. She texted me the link to this video. I’m inspired. Question: I saw a company that sold hardware similar to yours for holding the pieces tight. Their instructions said not to use glue. Something about moisture and allowing for movement with the swelling and shrinking of wood as the humidity and temp change. ??? Obviously you haven’t had any issues.

    Awesome video. There’s several places where it looks like some strong double sided tape would have really helped you out [Positioning Template under Tablet, holding straightedge for cutting with Skillsaw, etc].
    There’s a neat trick you probably already know - put a piece of masking tape on the two objects you’d like to be together temporarily & put CA [Cyanoacrylate/ Superglue] between the layers of masking tape. It holds it plenty secure for drilling, router work, etc, but popping the CA glue is Easy and then you just need to peel the masking tape.
    Ideally you’d want to use this before final sanding & finishing, but I’ve used it even after finishing with good results.
    Full disclosure: it’s not my idea, I learned it from a Woodworker on CZcams [Rex Krueger, maybe?].
    Good luck on your future efforts!
    Cheers,

    • @jaredmyers3227
      @jaredmyers3227  Před 2 lety

      @@christiandenard I think zipbolts would be a good way to keep the end tight to one another and inline with each other. I would try to make sure you have the joint resting on cabinets to help support joint. I would probably put zip bolts in while mounting to cabinets. Test fit them take apart, place them on top of counters then bolt them together. I wouldnt try carrying them together as one piece, if that makes sense. Assemble on cabinets

    Hi Jared, thanks for the great video, that's super helpful. I was wondering if at some point you were considering putting some wood filler around the edges when you joined the different countertops? I would think that without you would still see the joint. Thanks!

    • @drymoonproperties
      @drymoonproperties Před 3 lety +1

      Wood fillers are for the most part not food grade material so using any fillers isn’t the wisest choice making sure your joints are well fitted, glued and tight is best. You always have to take the time to sand, plane etc whatever you need to do to get those individual pieces or tops fit really snug when done properly no need for fillers. I have over forty years of experience I watch other people’s videos one because we never know where a great idea or thought will come from and I am now retired and extremely ill it helps me stay connected to my work and love. I was a professional carpenter and woodworker because I really love it after spending several years in the Army in a very high stress dangerous job it gave me peace of mind and I felt connected to this wonderful world. And I have met many great people along the way. Enjoy this activity it’s a wonderful way to spend some time in life.

    How did you install the cook top? Did you have to use any protection around the inside edge or just place it in and screw it down?

    • @jaredmyers3227
      @jaredmyers3227  Před 9 měsíci

      I did not put any protection on block. My thought was if this is safe to mount on a laminate counter (that has pressed wood and glue) than it will be safe with butcher block. Plus the heating elements are pretty far from the edges and the appliance has a metal box around everyghing. There is also a gap between metal box and butcher block. The appliance rests on the butcher block around the edge and screws into the cabinet below. Keep following me I am working my way through my whole kitchen build and show all the steps. I just started getting to the Island in episode 12. Thanks for question!

    Is the 8ft counters actually 96 inches, or are they 98 inches? Ive found a few that give the extra 2 inches, which is what I need since I'm using a 36" and (2) 30" Ikea cabinets back to back. These ones are almost $100 cheaper per section, so if these ones are actually 98", then they will work to give me a 1 inch overhang on the sides.
