  • 2nd point- he was forced, compelled to carry it. He was ‘caught’ and forced to carry. Meaning he tried to run away, but they apprehended him.
3rdly - Mark talks about the 2 sons.
7 spiritual lessons from the life of Simon of Cyrene's family:
1st point: more than man’s praise, an honor received from God is more valuable. Simon got the honor of carrying the cross of the world’s savior even for just a bit. His body came in contact with the blood of the Lamb of God, spattered on the cross. At a time, when even none of the 11 disciples got the privilege to bear their master’s cross. Yet he got only a line’s mention in all 3 gospels, the one who did such a small, yet great thing. That is why honor from God is worth far more than man’s praises.
2nd point: God can call anyone to bear the cross. We have no clear idea of who he really was -some say a businessman coming to Jerusalem. The word says he was coming from the countryside. Probably living there to save costs. Maybe he was one of the gentiles coming to see the festival at the temple at Jerusalem, the Passover for instance. It was a week of celebrations. This reminds us of another north African and Ethiopian, the royal eunuch whom Philip met on the way back from worshipping at the temple. So Simon might have been poor, that’s why he was caught. God can call the riyal eunuch or a poor laborer. That is why God calls us to carry the cross - it is a privilege. We have nothing to boast, no qualifications.
3rd point: God can call us whenever to carry the cross. Simon probably had many expectations coming from the countryside, going home to Jerusalem. They caught him at the time when he least expected it. Look at Abraham, living in the land of Chaldeans worshipping idols. He was living a satisfied life. God called him, not his relatives.
Look at Moses, at an unexpected time God called him. He expected God to call him when he was 40 years old. Acts 7:21-25. He saw the injustice done to his fellow Hebrews and attacked the Egyptian. He thought the Israelites would see him as a savior, but that did not happen. God called him much later Acts 7:34, at 80 years old. Now he was old and trembling, not when he was 40 and strong.
Look at Amos 7:14,15. Amos was ‘caught’ by the Lord as he took care of Sheep. The disciples were each called at odd times, fishing, sitting under a tree etc.
4th point: We will be compelled to bear the cross. All 3 gospels mention that clearly - he did not want it, he had other plans. But they caught and compelled him to carry the cross. Jer 20:7 when God calls Jeremiah out for ministry - you visited me and compelled me. You forced me to accept. In jn 1 - we see three the ‘next day..’ vs 29, 31, 43. why the next day? No one to follow Jesus. But the next day 2 of John's disciples followed him. Then again the next day he gets Philip and Nathaniel. Jesus never quits but waits for the next day to find more disciples to follow Him. Jesus waits patiently for us the ‘next day’ to compel us to carry the cross, follow Him
The ark was caught 7 months in the philistine camp. But the ark caused great trouble to them, so they decided to return it. In a new cart, with 2 cows pulling, they sent it to Israel. 1 sam 6:10 the young calves cried from the back, but the mothers did not turn back but pushed on. Paul says the burden is on me to preach the gospel, I am not looking to the losses.
5th point: Only walk behind Jesus. Only Luke points this out. Matthew writes his epistles to the Jews, presenting Jesus as a King. “Where is born the king of the Jews?” Mark wrote to the Romans, portraying Jesus as a servant. Luke writes to the Greeks, portraying Jesus as a Man. John writes to the church, showing Him as God.
Mathew represents Jesus as a lion, Mark as a bull, Luke as a man, John as an eagle.
Heb 5:7 is Jesus’s prayer at Gethsemane. With blood sweat. Jesus carried the front end of the cross, Simon the other end. Simon may have been a stranger at that moment, but the principle here- Let Jesus carry, you follow. Take up your cross and follow Me. We must also only follow.
6th point: The children of those who bear the cross will become famous. Rufus and Alexander are mentioned in the epistles as famous in the Lord. Rufus is a leader in the Roman church, that’s why Mark mentions the children since he was writing to the Roman church. Alexander was a leader in Antioch church acts 13:1. or he might have been a governor. Either way we see that the children of those who bear the cross are blessed. All we have to do is bear the cross, nothing else.
7th point: the wife of him who bears the cross will be praised. Rom 16:13. ..Paul says: Salute Rufus’s mother whom I treat as mine. A mother’s role is to take care of the children. Her role is to pray to intercede for her children. Rufus’s mother prayed like a mother would for Paul.
Simon, at one point the cross will be removed from your back. The Lord’s coming is soon, we need not bear this cross for much longer.

M.A. M.A. John. ❤❤❤
