Much as I enjoyed the first episode as far as it went and all of it was done very well, the more I watched the more saddened and frustrated I became.
Two thoughts come to mind:
Nihilism and and an inability to follow an idea through satisfying progress to a worthwhile conclusion - very much modern society in a nutshell.
The underlaying lessons the various 'stories' were trying to 'teach' once past the superficial certainly aren't the ones I'd want my children to learn.
A very well done, thoughtful, video. Thank you.
I've watched this film several times and taken more away with each viewing. It's become one of my personal favorites. To me, each of the tales do connect, in that they collectively mock the absurdity of human life and behavior. Meal Ticket specifically, is probably the smartest critique of American art I've seen since Mulhullond Drive. It doesn't get better.
The breakdown of the movie was great! You're an inspiration for all of us too afraid to make things and I applaud you for it. Keep goin' strong. :)

I was prepared to critique your critique however after listening to it, your dissertation was as good as any I've heard.
I feel like it plays on the different tropes of the popular western in Hollywood. From the tassel shirt-wearing, campfire singing westerns of the early to mid-20th century, to the grittier spaghetti westerns to the more contemporary styles of the genre we see in film and on tv. Each story is told in each of the different styles.
This movie is a great example of the pride exhibited in people.
I can't believe I somehow missed this film.
I absolutely love Coen brothers films.
Gonna have to dig this up somewhere and watch it.

hmm....All gold canyon is actually a straight up filming of a classic Jack London story from I think the 1930s. So I don't see it as a social commentary so much as a moment of time in the wilderness of the frontier.

of this it is government regulation that causes these things.

Buster Scruggs is the definition of unfair. For as highly as he considered his might, had he truly made his conduct fair, then the examples he made of lesser agents of death would be alive to testify as much.
Yet the only man who truly represented a threat upon his vitality was the same man who emptied out a head that already had little to eject.
All those other impoverished souls were instead regarded as toys to play with, and points to prove a deeply disturbed look on his fellow man.
He was as black in spirit as his taxer was in dress.
He made a sick game out of taking every piece off the board in front him.
And the only honest death, in so far as death could ever be excused as honest, in which he played his part in bringing,
was only his own.

The explanation of capitalism was off base, but most explanations are. Need to look deeper into that story than just the impersonal necessities of capitalism. You took the bait and assumed the limbless man was a man simply because it was played by an actor. Think more along the lines of anthropomorphization of an item or tool that one uses to ply one's trade. When the tool gets worn out and can no longer be repaired then it is thrown out and replaced. You were duped by the story teller to feel for something that wasn't really a person to deny obvious logic and create catharsis. Namely the question why we wouldshould treat a person different from a tool.
