- While I was in London in October I finally got to meet up with my good friend and master bespoke shoemaker Dominic Casey. After our last video together, where we discussed the new casual shoes he is making for me, Dominic went away, and managed to find some shoes that related to the pair he is making me. But not just any shoes, these are an actual pair of King Edward VIII's shoes!

The great thing about kirby's videos is that you get to know the whole character through all the videos and can quickly decide on a shoemaker who is sympathetic to you. Thank you Kirby for this great video
Great point!
besides being a brilliant bespoke shoe/bootmaker, Dominic Casey also wins the best hair and 'stache award!!!
First thing I would like to do is thank Kirby for sharing this incredible video. Second I’m not going to chime in on the Duke of Windsor politics. That’s for a different video channel. Kirby was spot on in his selection of the Duke of Windsor to discuss fashion. The Duke of Windsor was one of the most stylish individuals of his time and arguably even today. The Duke’s fashion style is one to be emulated. It was first class all the way.
Given that shoes are the most functional part of human attire, we need a museum displaying the evolution of shoes at all stages of human history. It would be interesting to see how the craftmanship of shoes reflect the resources and needs of the time.
There is actually a shoe museum in North Hampton.
@@kirbyallison or if the UK Northampton
I'm a furniture maker in Virginia, USA and my shop repaired a bureau that belonged to King George V fitted out to be on a ship. Very cool. Great video Kirby!
Very cool!
Really like Dominic Casey, seems like a solid bloke!
Nice shoes good quality, great craftsmanship, thanks for sharing
Wow!!! What a video! Absolutely loved the whole thing from beginning to end. You have a great way of drawing people out Kirby. Thank you
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it all
What a wonderful story. Kirby, I was delighted to see the positive results of your videos, well done Sir!
Always impressed by the knowledge Mr. Casey has when it comes to shoe making.
Great listening to Dominic Casey. Looking forward to purchasing a pair of shoes.
Hahaha....Kirby at the 3:12 mark.... looks at the camera shaking his head...
That was hilarious Kirby.....❤
Always great to see Dominic!
Such a joy to watch. Kirby you are my men's wear hero. I hope to one day dress with your level of style and elegance. Right now I have to be happy with my TLB's which I absolutely am. I do hope to experience bespoke in both shoes and suit. Thank you for the continuing education. All the best!
Kirby - You should meet Patrick Grant, owner of Norton and Sons on Saville Row (next to Henry Poole). He is a Duke of Windsor fan. He even has the catalogs from the auctions of the Duke of Windsor's estate. They even auctioned off all of his clothes which were made by several tailors on the row. Patrick may even own some of the Duke's shoes or clothing.
Brilliant video Kirby. Dominic is a joy to listen to.
Fascinating, I love Dominic's historic insights!
Hi Kirby
Great Video
Loved Seeing The Duke of Windsor’s Collection !!
Thanks
What an absolute delight!
I think there‘s a picture of the duke wearing these during a 1949 vogue photoshoot… love this pair!
two great gentleman ... great conversations..
I’m really looking forward for the videos with Domenic Lee and you.
I would like to see 4 hours + of content of them talking about boots!
Can’t wait to get those guys together!!
Just East of Marble Arch, 487 Oxford would have been in that block now redeveloped into the Park House Apartments, that glass building that looks rather like a chocolate.
I appreciate your content. I have learned a great deal. I'd like to see more content with USA based shops. Many viewers may not be able to go to London to fit a pair of shoes.
Great content. Love the history and would appreciate similar videos in the future.
Did Dominic share with you where the Duke of Windsor’s Peal loafers “live”?
Thanks!
The tennis shoes in the photo are probably vulconized like a pair of converse, as much as we see tennis shoes as a modern invention they are actually over 100 years old
Btw thank you for the wonderful video
Entertaining stuff. And yes, it is a great knot✔
The proto trainers look very similar to British army tropical boots/shoes and army PT shoes. I think those all had canvas uppers and sort of rubber soles. So look into that.
Dominic has the passion Top, Top Man and Shoemaker,
It is interesting how these fit into the development of material technologies if they are from just after the post WWII period. Specifically the rubber and aluminum components.
24 mins well spent with this video!
Hmmm those 'proto-trainers' look to be made with a cup-sole or strobel construction... I really enjoy these videos with Dominic! To me he is the quintessential English gent; highly engaging, intelligent and interesting, with a healthy dose of eccentricity! You can keep your cigar-puffing bounders, he is the real deal!
Peal & Co was acquired by Brooks Brothers. They still use the brand but re label Crockett & Jones. Last I knew annyway
Kirby, could you review G&G deco holden in chestnut it's beautiful work of art.
Dominic is such a class act
He’s the best!
Kirby can easily pass for a duke 👑
as always an interesting and informative video.!
it would be even better, however, if Kirby could avoid interrupting the interviewee constantly.
Nice video but hoped you could have shown tighter closeups and talked a bit more about the materials, craftsmanship and style of those beautiful shoes. Say what you want about Edward but man could he dress, everything he wore was on point - he was never afraid of patterns, textures or pops of color without being gaudy. Finally I’m convinced that his shoes including the beautiful pair here served two purposes, practicality and a depth of style so smooth and complete that it had to showcase his footwear (even the socks). That is what I was hoping to see and hear more about - the SHOES !
Mr. Casey knows his trade.
A weird and fascinating character the Duke, but it is always bizarre checking out a dead guys shoes. Check out the historical connection to Dr. Lord Dawson of Penn.
What size were the Duke's shoes?
I'd love to know your opinion on Boris Johnson's attire! He makes Compo look smart.
Suit made by IKEA, goodish (yet poorly-ironed shirt), badly-knotted Hermès tie (his only concession to good taste), worn-out (rubber-soled for a rubber soul) oxfords and short socks. I repeat: SHORT socks!
Bojo ain't got no sartorial mojo.
I always thought you could choose rubber soles. Wearing leather soles in my climate would very soon lead to a broken neck.
Certainly not very commonly discussed…
@@kirbyallison that's why we love u
What watch were you wearing, Kirby?
A good rule of thumb seems to be avoid any footwear style chosen by Churchill.
Yeah. Not sure about the front zipper boot…
One thing we are forgetting here is most of Churchill’s footwear choices were necessitated by his physique. For a rather heavy-set gentleman with a protruding belly, it is next to impossible to bend down to tie shoe laces or close monk straps. His famous style of slip-ons and front zipper boots are easily to wear for a man of his physique. P.S.: Can attest to this as a fat man myself! 😂
A brilliant video, but could you say ‘King of the UK’ please? M.
I feel like a lot of shoes are to heavy and not wide enough….i do like the rubber sole its light . But many fine shoes are to tight not wide enough .
I want to know that what business you guys do and want to become a gentleman like you guys
14:40 ... Churchill wore zippered shoes because he couldn't tie a bow. Not that bright.
Although this is very interesting as an Englishman myself the Duke of Windsor and the Duchess of Windsor are not well thought of in this country probably because of there honeymoon in Nazi Germany , Meeting and staying with Hitler the Hitler salutes etc plus there’s the MI5 and MI6 reports on the possibility of both of them being possible risks and I mean Security Risks there was talk he was linked with Frances early surrender because Germany knew where to attack. However the shoes are excellent and my favourite suit is a Handmade Prince of Wales Check
Not your fault at all, Kirby (and Dominic said it too), but Edward VIII wasn’t actually ‘King of England’, he was King of the United Kingdom, there hasn’t been a King or Queen of England since 1707 (as a result of the Act of Union). It’s a mistake that many people make, including many British people, but mixing in the circles you do it’s probably best to get it right.
He was never actually crowned. While Edward VIII was technically King, his coronation was due to take place the year after his abdication.
Correct, he didn’t make it as far as his Coronation, but he was King from the moment his father died until the point he abdicated. The Coronation is only delayed in modern times because it takes a while to organise.
Thank you for the refinement!
@@kirbyallison No problem.
The buckled loafers are gentleman's 'court dress shoes' not opera pumps.
When he speaks about opera pumps he is referring to the black patent shoes with silk bows, to the left of the court dress shoes. I don't think you could catch this man out when it comes to shoe vocabulary, trust me.
@@WL-ld6dz fair enough. Your channel's great btw.
At least one pair of buckles are for highland evening dress
Great video, love it!
But please, stop saying "actually", Dominic!
I’m the Duke of Walmart.
Jesus is your way to heaven Believe in him and you will have life after death. He shed his blood for your sins to be forgiven
This video has nothing to do with the fictional character you think is real… can we please stay on topic?
@@benjamin3541 I really couldn't care less if you do or do not believe in fictional characters, the choice is yours and it's your birthright to choose and believe in what you want, you do you... Just don't go around forcing it down people's throats, that's also the reason people hate vegans... you don't want to do like they do.
While I don't believe in Jesus or any religion for that matter, I do agree with some of the values that are taught in them.
Again, I really don't think it's appropriate to discuss values and religion in a shoe video, so that's the reason I obviously poked fun at religion...
@@benjamin3541 You didn't. The other person did by being off topic in a shoe video hahahaha =P...
Ugly shoes to say the least. The fact they were worn by the King of England doesn’t make them any special
King of the United Kingdom, apparently! 😅😉
I find these loafers rather lovely to say the last. Just goes to show how fashion forward and stylish king George V was. Very modern silhouette and elegant.
We’ll, look on the bright side, at least it’s not just my shoes you find ugly. Relieved to know it’s not just me, thankfully Peals&Co, one of the historically great shoemakers also did some ugly stuff.
@@dominiccasey4466 I never said your shoes are ugly. There is so much work and craftsmanship that goes into making your shoes, no doubt about that. I just don’t find them as interesting to me personally as G&Gs or YFs. And that is just one opinion.
Especially considering he was a nazi sympathiser. The man had style but he was far from a good person
