  • The idea that our spacetime might be holographic is a long-standing one, dating back to the astounding observation that not only black holes possess a finite entropy, but that such entropy is proportional to the area of their event horizon. In short, it can be summarised as the conjecture that a certain class of quantum gravity theories if not all should be identical to an apparently different family of quantum field theories, lacking gravity and in one space-time dimension less. This would allow to either explore strongly interacting particle physics by means of well understood gravitational physics or to probe the quantum nature of space-time by employing well understood conceptual framework.
Juan Maldacena is the Carl P. Feinberg Professor in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. His 1997 paper "The Large N limit of superconformal field theories and supergravity" presented an explicit realisation of the holographic principle, in the form of the AdS/CFT correspondence. He has made significant contributions to quantum field theory, string theory and quantum gravity.

As a self taught novice, this interview has been wildly enlightening and has led me to understand ads/cft correspondence & duality much better. I’ve read a lot and have watched many Susskind lectures which gave me a solid foundation but the Professors expertise coupled with the hosts questioning and method of explaining back in his own words was very helpful. I have no formal education in physics and being interested in and wanting to understand astrophysics thoroughly led me to first be able to conceptualize physics in general. So I really had to start from scratch and finding high quality technical information that covers multiple subjects like this is extremely rare. So thank you to this channel. Maldicenas 97 paper is the most cited paper in history, if you didn’t know. The man is a living legend. You should ask him to help you get Susskind on

I was going to say basically the same things, this was a great interview/discussion with Juan. It would be so awesome to have Maldacena and Susskind on together :D

What a great job you have, to talk to the smartest people on the planet about the most important questions we can ask. How do you get these towering geniuses to come on your show???

Many of such brilliant people are very humble. I've sent mails to Dr Edward Witten as well as Dr Juan Maldacena and both of them replied multiple times. But most people never really send mails.

I have too lol. To Juan, and a few others. Yeah very humble.
That man is probably in the top 3 smartest physicists alive. Gets paid over 500k a year to think. Susskind is highest paid @ over 600k and he doesn’t even have to teach anymore, he’s pushing 90 and still making breakthroughs

The word entropy was mentioned close to 100 times during this interview. The word quantum was used 90 times. The word boundary was mentioned 40 times. Seems like you guys were just repeating the same three words over and over.

It seems like you have no idea what you’re listening to yet decided to comment anyway. That man is one of the greatest theoretical physicists alive-full stop. I hope you had fun counting words bud

@@jimsteen911 Mister, it seems like you don't know who you're talking to. I don't recognize Juan Maldacena as one of the greatest and nor should you.
It's funny to me that you think I counted any words during the conversation. I just made a simple search for a couple of terms in the transcript after recognizing how repetitive and circular this conversation was.
