When it comes to Steam Boilers. Gordon Schweizer with âAll Steamed upâ does the best work. Not a flashy channel but pure skill and experience. I actually favor an over sized drop header to send out to the system. Not a fan of how the piping looks.
He is the best at least on CZcams. And he doesn't put in an atmospheric boiler unless the customer is cheap. He usually goes for a Weil SGO with a Carlin EZ-Gas. And switching from oil to gas on a steam system is insane, especially when the eastern states are so crazy about banning natural gas. Biodiesel is going nowhere because it's carbon neutral. On oil you have the option of a Burnham Megasteam, probably the best steam boiler made. A 3 pass boiler, no heat transfer surfaces above the waterline at all, 86% efficiency. Not approved for gas unfortunately. I'm doing one in my own house, on gas, with a Carlin EZ-Gas burner, because I don't care about the warranty. As far as I can tell there has not been a single corrosion related failure on a Megasteam since it came out in 2008. For an approved option I would go with a Peerless EC-T or Dunkirk SBO with a Carlin EZ-Gas or Riello G200. Both approved to run with a power gas burner. No reason to go with an inefficient atmospheric today when we have residential sized power gas burners. Using Megapress on near boiler piping is just dumb, you know it's going to leak in 10 years or less. I would never consider doing one without threaded fittings, preferably cast, at every joint. As you say too, an oversized drop header. On my own Megasteam I will go for a 3 inch drop header and 2 inch equalizer, everything sized as for the MST629, the largest size, even though I'm only using an MST288, the smallest size. But from what I've seen Mike's not the greatest in terms of seeing why something is done a certain way. He replaced a Gorton D straight pattern with a Gorton 1 because the thread on the bottom was bigger. Those two vents both flow 0.330 CFM. The thread has nothing to do with it. He also replaced a perfectly good Robertshaw millivolt gas valve because he thought the powerpile generator was a thermocouple. Making it so the customer's steam boiler would no longer run during a power outage.
Impressive how precise Peterâs work is!
I love the guys deadpan stare as he's enthusiastically explaining they won't have to thread anything.
Then he says are you missing the point he's like no I get it lol
It is a great feeling when you have the old boiler out and the new one in place! I feel thatâs 1/2 the job alone. That electric hand truck is back and lifesaver.
I take it the âHail Maryâ workedâŠâŠthose viewer stats at the end of the video are impressive!
Great work by your Team, as always Mikey!đ
Never ceases to amaze me how much they often get done before 9am. Our guys here they might turn up before 9 but they'll then wander about, talking, smoking, waiting for their mate to arrive. Nearly every time. I'm sure plenty don't do that's my experience.
I bet you guys wouldn't pull a thru the wall boiler out cover the hole with cardboard then say the brickie will be here in 2 weeks in the meantime you effectively have a 3 foot hole in a north facing wall at the coast in November.
I really wish the trades we have in our home (landlord) were half as courteous as you, just shutting the door would be a good start
You got the test man. I passed HVAC equipment (85% of everything in MI), Hydronic Heating, Cooling & process piping, & unlimited service in Michigan. I took an 8 hour class with study guide. Passed all the classifications first attempt with mostly crash course studying the morning before testing. If I can pass MI test, youâll breeze through FL testing. I might be joining you in licensing and relocating $)
Mike broke the new guy already đđđ
Lol
Today was a good day.
Daniel and Peter are homeruns! Through back to guys that want to work hard. These new kids today are lost Mike, heads are up there ass and in there phone. Find two more like Danile and Peter your golden. Happy Hannukh Merry Christmas Mike!
Nobody wants to work because not many companies are paying livable wages anymore especially entry level positions, it's not the same America it was back in the 1960's anymore where you can work a blue-collar job and afford a house and support a family on one income and people need to stop pretending that it is that simple still.
Like the other guy said, I wouldn't kill myself doing hard manual labor for anything less than $20/hour. That's what I was making 10 years ago as a newbie and I'd hope new guys are getting at least that now if not more. Especially in the area they live in, NYC has an insane cost of living. Even $20/hour isn't much there. You can work as hard as you want and many still don't get anywhere in today's America. If your employers don't appreciate your hard work then why work hard and any chance at a promotion and more pay looks bleak? Could take a decade+ slaving away at a company to get that opportunity. That's why kids are lost and working class Americans are so miserable. The entire working class industry depends on paying the people that do the brunt of the work little so the people at the top can make all the money. It's the greed of capitalism. It's not viable long-term as eventually, all the money and wealth funnels to the top as pure greed takes over and leaves little or nothing for everybody else and that's what's happening in America. The middle-class is dying a slow death. The kids today see this for what it is, this is why 'people don't want to work'.
Mega press is back baby !
mikey was struggling with that pipe wrench! someone didnt eat their wheaties! LOL
Sounded like he aggravated an old sex injury
Mikey Pipes! Awesome videos man always enjoy watching them, thank you đ
Mikey Pipes youâre the man
We literally just got a mega press it's so new no one has used it yet. Looking forward to using it. Nice Job
Great show today
The live stream was awesome
Love watching you guys
Mikey you should be honored people using ur line between I noticed you used a number of hvac CZcamsr caught phase in your video as well sir.
Mike awesome job on the install and that powered hand truck is the nuts
I loved installing the Burnham boiler. We used the mega steam
mike, your patience with the youngsters is great. you should get all your guys brunt boots, GREAT BOOTS! no affiliation!
carry some boiler blocks on truck lay them on landing so u can tilt hand truck forward on last step at sit boiler on blocks remove hand truck and restrap.
What I like to do when it comes to fittings being close I mark them to make sure it will be good đđœ
Loved the live of this! Had a great time with everyone there. Fantastic job. I love the extra tall pipe out of the top! Sorry you lost a 1 day employee.. But, maybe it'll be good for you.
Long time subscriber to your channel, Just wanted to say Merry Christmas to you and your guys.
It will be interesting to see how well the Viega fittings hold up. My 300 will thread 2 inch but when I get 2-1/2 and 3 inch systems I buy nipples and cut them in half, jewel clamp and weld them. These little inverter mig welders make it easy. Tell your young helper before he closes the water supply to the water heater to hook up the hose to the drain and blow it out first. Sometimes this will open it enough for your pump to finish it after you cut it free. Good video, it shows people the struggle of bringing a steam boiler in through the house. I had an apprentice drop through the steps years ago three steps from the bottom, him the hand truck and the boiler, lucky he wasnt hurt.
Mike awesome job !Mike Im amazed how many steam mains in houses aren't insulated .Dan Holohan recommends yeah I seen in it Commercial buildings so many house no bueno! Thanks Mike my coffee mug is a coming!
I love the mega press fittings too bad they weren't black to match the pipe but I know you can paint them too if you wanted to
Thanks
59:48 haha, I think we've all done that at least once. You can always cut the tip of the handle off so it clears or just leave it as a memento to the screw-up so the next guy that comes in to work down there can have a laugh.
Very good
Hi Mikey, as I've said before love your channel.
I couldnt help get excited when you contemplated getting into the 'changinging hot water anodes business'. Here in Perth Western Australia, where the water goes backwards down the sink, there are companies just doing anode change outs. 2 year cycle, come in spin out the old and in with the new, $299 inc $75 anode. I do my own but its a great little side business and it works. It gives you another 5 years on your hot water heater. We have 'hard' water here so it pays well.
Have a great Xmas and look forward to 2023 with you and the team..... cheers.
Bruce
mikey! I always comment on something you did in your videos. not today brother! today, I wish you the best luck in your adventures into brooklyn. sounds like there's a huge market and I wish you the best in your entrepreneurial endeavors. you got this dude!
@@PipeDoctor What I find wild is that, as you know, people were getting into white collar stuff and there weren't as many people in the trades for a while. Now the kids don't want to do ANYTHING, lol, trades or otherwise.
Glad you got Peter under your wing though, he seems interested in what you have to teach.
Boiler feed shall connect on return piping on Inspection job. Makes sense to keep Hartford loop clean and ensuring the return(s) make their way back to that barrel of water.
Also, would be nice to see a drain on the wet return. Y'all dropped the ball on that.
Clean job. Impressive. Way to be.
the service guy at our shop is one of the smartest guys ive ever met yet he cant do sheet metal transitions to save his life lol!
Shee metal is hard, idk how people make the crazy duct work they doâŠ
The videos with no editing are fucking amazingđ
Thank you so much! I'm glad you appreciate the rawness of my videos.
On the steam max I love how the p trolls is mounted
Hey Mickey Pipes you know what they say { Its easy when you Know How] keep up the good work.
Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah Mikey Pipes and Crew! đ đ đœ đ
its you, mikey pipes!!!!!!
This is the first Steam Job I have seen with the Viega. The only thing that worries me about the Mega Press stuff on Steam is the O-Ring drying out and leaking in the future.
I appreciate how you interact with Daniel and Peter, sounds almost like a normal construction job. Hopefully you didnât scare away Anthony. Thanks for the videos. Have a Happy Hanukkah and a Happy New Year, for the others Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
@@PipeDoctor I attached the pipe however the customer wants. We had similar issues with Victaulic pipe connections years ago, they said the fittings were fine for water and glycol. It was multiple glycol systems, the fittings would leak. After numerous complaints and issues, there was a new rubber insert to fix the problem. So far so good. Iâm not trying to start anything, just been sold a lot of the next best things and it turns out to be a problem. Someone like yourself has to try it and see, and I appreciate that. Time will prove one of us wrong, I donât care if itâs me. Steam is a harsh environment for orings to survive, that was my main point. I still like you, Mike.
@@PipeDoctor reminds me of Naviens R&D or not, Viega is a good brand, that probably did R&D. Not put Death Machines in peoples homes and hope they work.
I watch the channel and get a lot of info on boiler
Mike another great video. Peter and Daniel, you guys need to eat some, arro, guandules, y pollo, strength in this trade is essential. Great job guys
Quality HVAC is more interested in corporate sponsors, promo codes and affiliate links then anything remotely HVAC related.
The storm door just use your foot to release the door from the locked position âŠslight outward push and the pin will release. đ
Brooklyn boiler turns boys into men! Thatâs where I learned
The utility outlet is a nice touch however, it should be a tamperproof gfci to meet code and provide protection for personnel using tools, etc.
Nice install.
Wise move expanding your business into Brooklyn. Plenty of steam units there that need your very expertise to either keep them going or determine if they need to be replaced.
Yeah I can't believe Anthony quit.
Once again I enjoy very much watching your channel and your content it's comical and educational I also did watch the live streaming of this particular install and congrats on the opportunity to be licensed in the state of Florida. I also want to wish you and your crew and your families the happiest and safe holiday season. Hope to see you guys in person soon.
Those press fitting make the job much easier but I'm still concerned they will eventually leak. Great job
We have been pressing the Viega system here in Germany since the late 1990s, everything is fine
Thing is with those is it removes the possibility of human error, you can't inspect a soldered joint to see whether it's good or not and even if it's sealed at that time the joint can fail esp on heating systems with expansion.
So all in these fittings are actually less likely to fail than traditional joints and they look much better too some of our central heating joints look shit (cowboy landlords plumbers)
We have a Metris. Money pit is all I can say. We do put a lot of miles on it but parts are expensive.
South carolina!!!!
Hook up pump to 1/2â pex and put down hot or cold water feed at top
Mikey pipes. Wait until you have to go into a south Florida Attic in June July and august đź. Lol it is like nothing you have ever experienced. Just a tip hit those attics way before noon if you can.
I Missed You Live Video
Like it
Every time I have the city Shut the water off at the street because the main stop doesnât work. They wonât turn the water back on till I install a dual check valve. So then I have to install a pressure tank on existing equipment.
Been waiting all day for this! Itâs me Tommy Gunz Mikey whereâs the CC for us hearing impaired individuals? Used high temp silicone to seal it customer didnât wanna pay⊠đ Oh this is the live video from this morning, yes? While is was replacing several parts a 31 year old Weil McLain oil fired boiler (triple acting aqua stat, pressure and temperature gauge and also a heavily leaking pressure relief valve!) Deep, Deep!
would be cool to use one of those PRESSURE PAL Hydronic Mini System Feeders, but not sure if they will work for Steam?
Figure you can pretreat the water, or use Gycol and not need to worry about the fresh water eating the furnace.
Daniel and Peter work smarter not harder.lol
We gotta get you a buncha coned cones so you can park anywhere
Over 90k!!
Dam the stairs look weak đ±đ±

Mike, you did not prep the pipe properly for the MegaPress fittings, you must clean the lacquer off of the pipe before installing the fitting. Also, you cannot butt two MegaPress fittings together like you did in a couple of places. Your 2â connections must have at least 3/8â of steel between them.
Also, if you bought quality ball valves like Apollo and a few others, you can change the position of the lever by 180Âș. You can tell if the handle is changeable by looking at it to see if it has two stops on the valve body for the lever. Itâs worth the extra $3.00 to provide a quality ball valve.
Nice job - love the Viega Megapress fittings and that you chose to do a drop header.
Quick question, now that you have the drop header, could you raise the boiler off the floor - by, let's say a foot or so? This would make the bending down a lot less in the future.
Watch the newer style meters. They will only let water go one way.
Mikey pipes! What was that cool ass hand truck? Where do I get one?
Iâm satisfied with the installation and I have a few questions. Iâm seeing zero insulation on the steam pipes and no insulation on the returns. Are you going to suggest that the homeowner get insulation from the supply house not the cheapest stuff they sell at Homeless Despot but nice thick pipe insulation to keep the steam from turning into condensate and high fuel bills?
I assume that someone removed the old asbestos insulation which although dangerous did a good job helping the steam stay hot until it reaches the radiatorâs.
If the homeowner wants to save some money over time they should add insulation to both the steam pipes and the returns both wet and dry to bring the condensate back hotter.
Not bad
Haha, yeah, make sure you don't loose the bottle inside đ
Wow! Vega pressâŠ..
Expansion?
man we carry those heavy ass boilers in amd out of install trucks by hand...
vacuum breaker on water heater? unless i missed it ! had to ask Daniel's off his game today
Way off my game, I figured out what my mind was preoccupied with but thatâs besides the point. I slacked immensely today and I will make sure that doesnât happen again.
No negative judgment my friend! Just busting chops, not that Mikey doesnât do enough of that . Love the Mikey teaches you guys. You got a good head on, your Gona be a good tech
Pivot!!
Interested in ever trying a Dunkirk? I think you would be happy with them.
The âbreadâ truck is being replaced by a âFedExâ truck.
Crown heights đ or Flatbush lol
I was just kind of curious is there a way to screw in a piece of black iron pipe into those feet to make it adjustable if you're on an on level floor since the feet that's on the boiler do not adjust hope it doesn't sound like a stupid question I was just curious
đđđđđđ
Worked on oil it's oil and soot in the pipe
Regarding the yellow handled water shut off valve that was installed too close to the above pipe to allow it to fully open. Can you remove the little nut holding on the handle , remove it, rotate it 180 degrees and reinstall it so it is pointing down instead of up to solve that problem.
Yea
Mike - when draining the boiler monthly, should more treatment be added? Or not necessary?
Change them main vents.
Blow air into the water heater
make up water is supposed to go in the return pipe not directly into the boiler
Dang. Second.
this is the first I have seen no threading of pipe ! Times changing , hey be kind to the boys, you calling names does no Justus. I know its in fun but you world may have some viewers that had to deal with this.
Do you have a lot of steam boilers installed in the States? I can understand that in an industrial plant but not in a private house.
Question on screwing together the stack pipes can you tape as well as extra security?
I like to do that just because I get concerned even with good draft. But It really shouldnât be necessary. The hot air naturally wants to go as high as possible which is the top of the chimney, so tap really is unnecessary one why draft is started. Which I think some manuals and specs can take up to 3 minutes to induce once the boiler fires up from cold
@@DCHVAC thanks Daniel for that.
@@DCHVAC thanks Daniel for that.
You never going to park that big truck in Brooklyn. Get smaller truck you be ok đ
Thereâs no parking in Brooklyn
You dont need vacuum breakers for the tank ?
which steam boiler is most reliable i have a peerless 64-07 which lasted maybe 6 years i noticed the top cover of the boiler started to corrode in the sixth year so it must have been leaking before that
Mikey? How heavy is that boiler? Just curious it looks like its a thousand pounds they way Daniel was holding back.
I think mike said 400lbs. Keep in mind Iâm a. Toothpick
Lol no i know i was just curious thing looks beastly
