  • World Champion Gymnast Maggie Nichols was at the top of her game in 2015 when she reported USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar for sexual abuse to USA Gymnastics officials. After failing to make the 2016 U.S. Olympic team and retiring from elite gymnastics, Nichols went on to become one of the best collegiate gymnasts of all time. Nichols joins "CBS Mornings" to discuss her new memoir.

OMG!!! Maggie’s interview gave me chills, and not because of the predator. I remember on day 2 of the the 2016 Trials Al Trautwig pointed out that the Committee wasn’t watching her floor routine. Now it makes sense.

Maggie Nichols is a wonderful person and was a FANTASTIC gymnast. We got to watch her for 4 years at all of the University of Oklahoma home meets. She was MAGIC 🪄 to watch. Maggie didn’t get to finish her collegiate career properly because of COVID, but managed to break all gymnastics records! What a successful career.

Way to go Maggie. You are very brave and thank you for your courage and inspiration for young women.

Maggie went through something horrible. Her narrative about 2016 needs to stop, she is deliberately encouraging hate towards other gymnasts who were also abused.

I feel for Maggie, I really do but she and her parents need to stop having this revisionist history about her potential place on the 2016 Olympic team. Maggie was at the top of the list in 2015 but she had a horrible injury right after 2015 Worlds. Anyone who is a gymnastics fan that follows the sport in all the years knew that put her spot at risk. She simply did not have enough time to get back up to her potential for the Olympics. All the other team members, plus the alternates, potentially has 1 or 2 routines that were going to be scored higher than anything Maggie could put up. Gabby’s bars alone would have punched her ticket and did. USAG was a horrible and abusive organization but her being a whistle blower didn’t cost her a spot. Marta would have put her on the team in a heartbeat if she could have massively help the team. Maggie couldn’t and did not. Maggie and her parents are contributing to racist campaigns that undermine Gabby (an Olympic AA champ, mind you) and her place on that team.

Evil does not exist in a vacuum. It needs supporters and other intermediaries at its front line to both facilitate and further its agenda.

It’s just crazy cause after she lost her 2 and a half she had no chance of making the team. Still awful what happened to her tho. All the best. I hope McKayla writes her book soon. 🙏🏼
