Ben also opens up about what it was like dealing with early internet hate during his time on the OC compared to how social media has evolved now.
We talk about the start of his relationship with wife Morena Baccarin while on set, making sense of life without the lights on, and how to fight through nerves to deliver a confident performance on set.

I've always been a fan of Gotham and I recently binged all of The OC, which I absolutely loved, so I'm definitely a fan of Ben as an actor, but this was the first time seeing him talk as himself, what a great dude! Loved this episode!

I loved Ben in Southland. Best cop show hands down. Everyone in that show killed it.
Best cop show, thatâs a tall order. It was really good but to me things like The Shield, The Wire or even Banshee (admittedly not really a cop show) are untouchable. Even Shades of Blue was very underrated.
Just Ben, Michael Cudlitz and the greatest actor on the planet not named Meryl or Daniel Day Lewis the always great Regina King throwing 100mph fastballs every week in an ultra realistic cop show. What was to love about Southland really...(sarcasm) The fact that show didnât have bananas ratings boggled my mind.
Donât know if Iâd call it the best cop show, but it was awesome. Ben, Michael Cudlitz and especially Regina King were fantastic in it.
Swann I meant like, JUST a cop show. The Wire was really more of a âeverything that was a disaster about 1990s Baltimoreâ show. The Wire is in my top 3 dramas ever.
Ben seems like a really chill and easy person to talk to. I wish more actors were like Ben. I have all the love and respect for Ben.
I love that you often bring up mental health. It's so important to talk about it and to normalize talking about it.
You're getting all of my TV show favourites on, Smallville, Buffy and The OC. Great to visit the past.

Ben was my screensaver in high school. He hardly ever does interviews so I was excited to see this!
It's ironic you interviewed McKenzie right now I just finished forcing my mom to binge the O.C, she resisted for over a year, she didn't believe me on what kind of show it was and when we finished she wanted to start it over, I said fuck that I hadn't seen Gotham since it was on and now we're on season 3!

Great interview Michael!! I got introduced to Ben with the OC during my High School years, I liked his voicework as Batman in Batman Year One and I really enjoyed his performance as Jim Gordan in Gotham!!!
Ben Mackenzie and Robin Lord Taylor were my favorite on Gotham đ. Never thought I would like Penguin until this show changed my mind.đ

Such a great interview! I liked his character portrayal on both OC and Gotham!
I never watched The O.C. and I did not have great expectations at all about Gotham and about Ben, but boy oh boy did he change my mind episode after episode. The creativity of Gotham's scripts, how all main characters and supporting characters are played by these incredibly talented actors. Every single one of them!
Want to meet Ben Mckenize once in my life before I die. I loved him in OC, gotham and in Southland.
Ben Mckenzie so talented. Loved the OC and of course Gotham and voicing Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman: Year One which was great with Bryan Cranston voicing Jim Gordon. You need to get Bryan Cranston as one of your guests for your next or future episode.
This was one of the most pleasant dynamics I have ever seen between you and a guest. I loved Ben Mckenzie in Gotham, such an amazing version of Gordon. I bought your mug as soon as I saw it in the last episode, hopefully one day I can get you to sign it!!

I find it interesting to. Even in Line Of Duty a good film by the way with Aaron Eckhart and Ben McKenzie.
I found it amazing how different he sounded in the film as a villain compared to Jim Gordon.
Lol because he does a ridiculous cartoonish voice as Gordon. You can't have seriously thought that was his natural voice. He just does the Christian bale batman voice.
I always wondered if he regretted of the voice he chose like Misha Collins said he did with Cass on Supernatural. Lolđ
Ben, i'have always looked up to you man. i def knew i could relate to you through your characters and personalities. This conversation really confirmed it for me. glad to have heard about your life experience and your view on things on this podcast.
Three things:
1. I've been a Ben McKenzie fan from the OC to Southland. Ben hardly does interviews so it's so nice to watch this. Not too mention that you guys have such great rapport!
2. Had no idea that you had a podcast. So excited to now do a deep dive into your channel and watch a ton of them. Belated Happy Birthday!
3. As a psychologist, I love that you bring up mental health but never conflate everyday anxiety with serious conditions. Both are important and should be discussed. Thank you for doing that!
Definitely love watching Ben's work. He is a true talent and I'm happy he's gotten to climb to the top of so many 'hills' as he put it.

I only barely know of Ben because my sister watched The O.C. I was intrigued though and because I enjoy the show I've been giving a lot of unfamiliar guests a listen/watch. Two things, Rosey. First, got that Fright Night poster myself - signed by Ragsdale and Sarandon! Also got Ragsdale to sign my blu ray of Mannequin 2. He looked at it, looked at me and goes "wait... they really put this out on blu ray?!" Second, I gotta go grab me some merch. It's time.
I've had to deal with a lot of personal and emotional stuff and idk man... hearing, watching, really listening... it helps. It gives me some much needed perspective, some insight, and plenty of laughs. So, thank you.

Another great interview! Your podcast is the only one I tune into constantly just because of your style. You have a way of bringing out the relatability in your guests which is great. Thanks for those years of playing Lex. I always felt Smallville was as much your show as it was Tom's in terms of character drive, it would not have been as successful without you.

Clancy Brown would be an interesting interview. The Justice League episode where Flash and Lex switched was really fascinating, especially his take on Flash being inside Lex.

One of my favorite IOY episodes so far. Love Ben Mckenzie; especially his performance as Gordon. Gotham gets a lot of flak, but I personally found it to be a fun show. While they did get to wrap things up, I hoped the show would end the way it was originally supposed to.
Also, I hope Michael does more voice roles in the future. He can do some pretty good accents and I was so pleasantly surprised to find out he was the voice of Johnny Charisma is Arkham Knight.
