The childish P.E. teacher, who makes every possible peadagogic mistake while managing a session for his class... from the lovely film by Ken Loach, 1969, UK. Hebrew subtitles.
It's hard to believe they were acting. The film is so realistic and reminds me of my school days, everything from teachers dishing out punishment to freezing days playing football in sleet and snow and sometimes freezing cold showers afterwards if the heating wasn't working.
I only hope today's kids don't realize how realistic this was. With today's standards I could have sues so many of my teachers I'd never had needed to work for a living
I was at a secondary all boys school during the 1970s. Watching these old clips of Kes, especially the head master brings back lots of horrible memories. Psychotic teachers with a taste for violence, bullying, intimidation and humiliation. And I got off lightly! If any of my old teachers are still alive I hope most of them look back on their careers with shame and hopefully remorse.
Sean, i'm old school and very old fashioned in so many ways. Just look at society nowadays, unruly kids, no manners or respect. The school we wennt to we often got a thrashing ,and at on so many occasions we deserved it. 😂😂However, I agree with certain sentiments of yours and one cannot condone violence, but it often madeth the man!🤔🤔 I got the slipper but no caning!
I concur mate but trouble is a lot of these teachers believed that living & maybe fighting through a World War or even two gave them the right to be 🐖's. Shame on them.
@@berttrueman5008 I don't think teachers are to blame for today's kids... it's the parents who indulge them when they misbehave, rather than teachers being nice.
I got cane only nearly broke my fingers off fairy liquid got squirted into my mouth I told teacher fuck off in primary school I was only about 5 year old was loving it though blowing bubbles all rest day lol
Beautiful film. The acting, cinematography, and editing give it such a naturalistic appearance. Im far too young to have lived it, but I feel like this is a documentary
A beautiful film. Did it for my gcse English. Sad, funny, strong, great film. Barry Hines wrote a legendary book. Ken loach bought it to life brilliantly
I think this must be the greatest scene in movie history! Totally hilarious and Brian Glover nails it as the psycho PE teacher. At the time Glover was a French and English teacher a a nearby Grammer school, the schools for the "smart kids". He was also a wrestler. The bandage he is wearing on his leg is from a wrestling injury the night before. Loach was thinking of replacing him because of it. Little did he know that this part would change his life, as he became a household name in the uk after getting parts to showcase his mighty acting talents, as was so well shown here. Check the dive when he has the ball, have you ever seen a non stuntman do that so well?
Our PE teacher at Lady Lumleys in Pickering was cast from a similar sadistic mould. He had been on Norwich City's books but had failed to make the grade - and now someone was going to pay for it! Us! Mind you, I caught him in the face with a beauty of a ball while he refereed a five-a-side match. Most popular thing I did at school.
Indeed. A failed bitter man who puffs himself up bullying children. Comedy gold this but sadly so close to the truth. Sad for the kids under his care. Genius Hines was in capturing & explaining this. Timeless.
Great tale, well told. We in Cirencester merely had an ex Navy PT type who quite definitely had a sadistic streak though some thought they "respected Robbie." No he ruled by fear and to do so with 1st years (year 7 in new money I think), well it was bullying. I loathed him then and loathe his memory. Glover captures the better eccentrics who could find a place teaching in secondary schools. Not so in today's Taylorised educational system.
What a marvellous ,weird and and wonderful world this is. I lived where this was filmed in 1969 ,know the places ,recognise the characters and spoke with the same accent that was so unintelligible it had to have sub titles. And when I search for it ,I find an Israeli geezer has uploaded it and now it has Hebrew sub titles.

The bit that makes me cry is when billy is running through the woods at dawn with the sunshine breaking through and that beautiful music. We grew up with the same skint life.
@@summan41man Yeah - I seem to remember in my class back in 1969/70 no 'Poorly kids' Yeah some skinny weedy kids and big lads girls that would have been picked on, but they seemed to have friends, I was friends with most of them. The greatness of Brian Glover. Wrestled as Leon Arras, speaking fluent French with a broad Yorkshire accent.

Very realistic for me Barry!
This was exactly how a PE class was for me in the 1970's. The best days of my life. I was a Billy Casper. To turn back those days.

Good example of the Barnsley dialect.
It's been shown on the big screen in Barnsley 12/12/22, I can't wait, already booked my seat.
I wonder what VAR would have done with the penalty?
This film still continues to make me cry. Horrible memories from a horrible system.
Indeed 1967 set in & may as well be 1867. Time changes. We are seeing a snapshot in history, a lost world.
