The look on John Candy's face in the final shot makes the whole movie for me. All the pain of missing his wife and all the joy he feels for Steve Martin and his family, all wrapped up in one sad smile. I was extremely surprised to be moved so much by him. I always cry when I see this.
Best Thanksgiving movie ever. Roger Ebert summed it up the best saying, "The movies that last, the ones we return to, don't always have lofty themes or Byzantine complexities. Sometimes they last because they are arrows straight to the heart. When Neal unleashes that tirade in the motel room and Del's face saddens, he says, 'Oh. I see.' It is a moment that not only defines Del's life, but is a turning point in Neal's, because he also is a lonely soul, and too well organized to know it. Strange, how much poignancy creeps into this comedy, and only becomes stronger while we're laughing."
I had a similar shot to the heart when Will Ferralls character is getting extremly annoyed at the voice he keeps hearing in the movie 'Stranger Than Fiction' (2006), until he finally snaps and just starts running around his apartment screaming 'SAY SOMETHING!', and he stops and looks at himself in the mirror. It was the first genuine emotion his character had expressed in probably a decade and he realised he was actually screaming at himself, say something, feel something. I felt like i saw and understood his whole life in that moment as he stares at himself in the mirror.
God, I miss Roger Ebert.
@@Burton-uu1sy Yeah, that movie is definitely a shot to the heart. Shame it's as highly underrated as it is.
@@mitchellhughes5180 You and me both. That was such a sad day when I learned that he died.
Indeed, Ebert was very vocal about his favourite movies, and this one deservedly earned his four star rating, his highest score. He apparently watched it every Thanksgiving.đŠâ„ïž
The car scene with them turning into skeletons and John Candy into the devil makes me laugh every time.
Bringing Del home saved Neal's marriage. In a deleted scene, his wife thought he was having an affair and making up the stories about Del. Neal didn't know it, but if Del hadn't walked in the door, his wife wouldn't have been so receptive. That explains the look of relief on her face when she realized Neal hadn't been lying to her. In the end, the director decided that subplot was unnecessary and took away from the sweetness of the ending.
The deleted scene wouldâve explained why she was so relieved when Neal and Del came in. Without it, her emotional overreaction (the tears, hug, and kiss) doesnât make a lot of sense. They should have re-shot the ending if they scrapped the subplot. Still loved the movie, though.
Personally I think Hughes wanted to include more scenes to explain Neal's wife suspected him of cheating --- but the studio wanted to keep the movie under 90 minutes and so those scenes had to be cut out --- however the final scene where she is in tears seems weird --- he was only late by two days LOL
I always copped that was why she was relieved. I don't think the film missed the deleted scenes at all to explain it. There was already enough context in the final version to see that his wife suspected he was lying and having an affair, and seeing Del made her realise she was wrong. It has always made complete sense to me, even the first time I saw it as a child. I didn't even know there were people who didn't think her relief made sense.
Wow i had no idea about that subplot - i always just assumed its the 80s and no cell phones and she really has no idea where he is.....and then he shows up at home and she's just so relieved he's home safe.
When I saw this movie, I couldn't understand her overreaction for a husband that was simply having trouble getting home and why she was so glad to see Del Griffith when she didn't even know who he was. Then I read about this subplot about her thinking Neal having an affair and then it made more sense. There is also a scene in the movie where Del has a black eye and its never explained how it got there.
This movie makes me miss John Candy even more. He seemed like such a sweetheart, both on and off camera, and nobody ever seems to say a negative word about him. Much like Del Griffith, Candy was the "Real Deal, what you see is what you get." Rest in peace, John Candy. đ
True, this and uncle Buck are two of my favourite comedies
Anthony Michael hall jus talked about how great he was recently.. he was a real life uncle buck.
He was a wonderful person. He was just a good, decent everyday guy. He embodied everything good about Canada and Canadians.
@@justakidfrombrooklyn1517 I love that story.
I miss him, too. Apparently at the Oscars ceremony they have a guy whose job it is to guide the presenters through the maze of hallways backstage so they can find they're way to where they need to be. Years ago I saw an interview with a guy who had that job one year, and he said of all the many stars he helped out only one took the trouble to thank him: John Candy.
âHow could a movie that was so anxiety-inducing and... horrible circumstances, be so perfect and heartwarming?"

Thank you for writing that.
Everyone's laughing and I'm just cringing... all these years I thought there was something wrong with me.
@@chefskiss6179 You're welcome.
This movie was painful in a good way.
You probably get this A LOT but youâre so wholesome. I sometimes watch your videos for the sake of feeling like thereâs still innocence left in this world.

@@Gravydog316 she was raised in Canada, Cassie has said in other videos and streams that she was born in the U.S., and now lives here. But yes, she has a Canadian education
A few fun facts:
The actor who beat Steve Martin in the cab race was Kevin Bacon.
The family home was the same house that was used in Home Alone.
The actress at the rental car office also played the high school secretary in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving.
Oh, that scene in which Del tells Neil that he doesn't have a home and his wife's been dead for eight years...gets me every time.
AndFerris Buellerâs Dadis in the opening scene with Neil in the Conference Room.
All were John Hughes movies, She's having a Baby is why Bacon was around. The scene they got picked up by the semi was on the square of Woodstock, IL, main square Groundhogs Day was filmed, as well as a bunch of other movies and shows.
This is the first movie that made me cry at the end when I was 8
It wasn't the same house as Home Alone. That one had the curved driveway in front of it and wasn't located at an intersection. Same style, though.
@IsoscelesKramer your right, same neighborhood in fact, I think we should look at Uncle Buck when comparing Houses
If you dig this vibe, you gotta see Hughes' "Uncle Buck," starring Candy as the titular character-----and what a character.
That's a terrific movie.
Absolutely agreeđđđđ
John Candy's best role in my humble opinion. I've watched that movie so many times.
Uncle Buck another amazing movie with John Candy!!! One of my favorites.
Also The Great Outdoors
John Hughesâ masterpiece. As much as I love Ferris Bueller, Home Alone, 16 Candles, The Breakfast ClubâŠ.thereâs just something special about Planes, Trains and Automobiles that canât be duplicated.
Well said sir, well said. Hilarious is tame.
Eh, " Red River Rock! ".
Same house as Home Alone.
Dutch movie is another great comedy.
Don't you think due date is inspired by planes trains and automobiles.
It's so similar right?
I will 100% watch this film anytime it comes on. An absolute treasure.
RIP John Candy
That scene with Steve on the L with the flashes of his family was added in unplanned. The camera was rolling between scenes as the train ran and Steve was thinking about his lines and also things that had happened on production. They loved the randomness so much they formulated the scene around it.
Also, the, "I don't have a home. Marie's been dead for eight years..." hits you like an absolute suckerpunch. Candy was such a genuinely kind man that when you seen him sad, even if it's just a performance, you believe it totally and completely.
Yeah, that scene at the end with Candy coming clean made everyone ball in the theater back in 1987. You could hear the sniffling. I know I did. :)
And originally the speech with Marie also had other things on it which made Del seem like an asshole, so they re-cut it, also Neil's wife was scared "Del" was really a woman and that's why she's so re leaved that he's home and Del Griffith is actually a guy.
The Dream Academy track while Steve Martin reflects on the L created the perfect emotional tone.
That line from John gets me every time!
@@Kazeromaru Yup. I kind of wish they kept the affair subplot in. The wife crying at the end seems a little too dramatic but with the affair idea it makes a lot more sense. But Iâm nitpicking.
John Candy is such a legend. JOE Montana spotted him in the stands during the huddle of the game-winning drive for Super Bowl 23. Only legends can make other legends take a pause for a cause.
I have think it was super bowl 23 not 13
That's how calm Montana was. Team down 3 in the super bowl, 3 minutes or so left, one long drive to win or lose the whole season... And he's just as chill as a sorbet.
@@adamplace1414Oh Damn. You're so right. Thanks for the correction.
@@lethaldose2000 No worries
Why do you have to ruin it by bringing up Superbowl 23? đż
Itâs literally rated R for one scene and itâs where heâs swearing F bombs left and right at the clerk. And this is also the scene that made Steve Martin say yes to doing the movie đ
Such a risk to leave this scene in and keep the R-rating, but thank goodness they did.
@@jonathanhill4366 I agree. It's such an iconic scene and still so funny to this day. :)
It's perfect because it's relatable :D
The money made him say yes, not the scene.
And it makes the movie somewhat unwatchable with family during Thanksgiving.
In the original script there was a subplot where Nealâs wife thought Neal was having an affair and he just made up the name âDel Griffithâ as an excuse as to where he was the whole time. That is why she seems so relieved to see Del because that means that Del is indeed a real person and that Neal isnât having an affair.
Haha that's cool, there was definitely a moment where I was like, hmm, she seems very pleased to see him, and vice versa
One story I've heard is that one person who was Jeri Ryan. At the time she was attending Northwestern University and taking acting classes. She appeared on either the train or the bus, but her part was cut.
John Hughes was so insanely talented. He made so many amazing films.
ehhh
"UNCLE BUCK" is a great John Candy movie!
Agreed, I hope that Cassie eventually covers it if she hasn't already!
that it is.
Classic!
Its my favorite, along with Cool Runnings.

I lost my best friend a few months after I got married. This was our favourite movie from when we first saw it in a theatre on its release. We laughed from when we first saw Candy's face in the taxi to its moving ending. Enjoy this treasure.
My condolences on your loss, though at least you both had a classic movie to share, and happy memories. đ
I donât want to take away from your post but I just wanted to share. I also lost my best friend (we were in a car accident together) and this is a movie we watched every year like clockwork. It was one of the few traditions we had.

I saw this in the theater with my older sister. She and I didn't always get along, but this was a joy moment for both of us, bursting with laughter along with the rest of the audience. Since then I've shared this movie with other people, and those are joy moments too. But even when watching alone, it always reminds me that, no matter how bad things get, there's always something I can be thankful for.
-- Happy Holidays Everyone. --
John Candy shouldâve gotten an Oscar for this movie. He makes me laugh and cry so hard every time I watch it.
Agreed. Greatest crime was that he didn't even get nominated for it.
Definitely should have been nominated but that was a tough year to win. Sean Connery beat Albert Brooks, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington that year for playing Jim Malone in The Untouchables. I don't know if I've seen any reaction videos for The Untouchables, would be a great choice though.
@@TBoNAtl imo i would nom Langella as Skeletor , i thought he was amazing in that role but Hwood is a snob about comedies or horror films , I wouldve nom Shaw in Jaws too
@@postersandstuff Oh my God, imagine the looks on the Academy voters' faces if they had to give Oscar consideration to a Cannon film based on a toyline. Golan and Globus should have submitted it.
Absolutely. John Candy's agency should have pushed 24/7 to get him an Academy Award nomination. He totally deserved it. I've been saying it for years. Thanks you.
An absolute classic comedy, one of the all time best.
And a good John Candy follow up - "Uncle Buck"
Uncle Buck is one of the all-time greats!!
Great Outdoors too
John Candy was a treasure of North America. Canadians and Americans, we all loved him. Hell, who didn't?
Steve Martin says to this day when he watches the end, he cries because of how much he respected John Candy.
& because there was a long speech that was cut;
& we learn Del's trunk contains all his late wife's possessions
Always a punch in the feels when it's revealed Del just went on the road after his wife passed and doesn't really have a home anymore.
I really love the amount of subtle foreshadowing concerning Del's reveal. His comment about not being home in years, calling the motel instead of his beloved wife, his wife's picture looking more like a funeral photograph, his pyjamas matching the curtains... Complete genius!
I'd never thought about that, about the picture of Del's wife. But you're so right. Another great layer in a truly great movie. Thank you for the insight.
I love how even in the film Neal catches the line âI havenât been home in years.â and even though Del dismisses it by saying that he was speaking figuratively, when Neal reminisces about the journey, that line and all the other small moments of foreshadowing come together, and you can tell that Neal, and by extension the audience if theyâve caught the foreshadowing, has figured out the truth, even before Del outright says it. Sad though it is, itâs very beautiful storytelling.
When Del finally makes the reveal in the station, it looks as though he's seated in a church pew and making a confession. Even the windows look like a church.
@@mediasawdust2458 Probably a lot of people sitting alone in church pews this week.
He also has a P.O. box number as his address on his trunk.
Well, for a guy who doesn't cry much (at all), I have tears in my eyes. I've been watching this movie since it came out and it was one of my dad's favorites. Thank you for this reaction!
Ah John Hughes, directed and writer for this film, Home Alone, Breakfast Club, Uncle Buck. And many other classics, he wrote the first 60 pages of Planes, Trains and Automobiles in just six hours. John Candy and Steve Martin are legends but we should never forget the genius of John Hughes :)
Six hours?!?!?
@@Slask7 I am just going from google but apparently he had a nightmare commute and wrote the core of the story :)
This is the best thanksgiving movie ever made.
It's great but IMHO I think "Home for the Holidays" is the best.
You are in for one heartwarming treat of a movie.. Makes me feel good your getting to share the "feels" that all of us that have seen it have.. God Bless Ya John Candy!
The humor in this movie is incredible and the scene where they're passing between the two semi's gets me laughing hysterically everytime. The scene at the end when Martin introduces Candy's character to his family gets me everytime. You can tell that Candy's character is a profoundly lonely man and in affect getting to join a loving family is something he has been craving for a while. I'm not ashamed to admit it chokes me up everytime.
i think that, it was the first time Del have to face the fact her wife is gone. And that eventually would help him to move on and start again with his life.
â@@jackprescott9652One thing I've always wondered is did his wife die in childbirth, since we don't hear about him having children of his own.
Was Del homeless for 8 years? If he's between ages 35-40, and his wife's dead 8 years, she died ages 27-32 yet her photo looks like she's 50!
FINALLY someone reacted to this movie..... and you couldn't have done a better job of taking us along for the ride with you

I absolutely love this movie. It has so much heart and charm. John Candy was a gift
Fun Fact: Steve Martin is a real germaphobe and Gus's son wiping his spit in his hand was not in the script. You can see Steve Martin wince as he shakes his hand.

Hey Cassie, I know their pain all too well. I was going to see my daughter for thanksgiving about 10 years ago, on a trip from NYC to DC on the bus. A car hits the bus at the Delaware Memorial toll gate. When the state trooper runs everyone's info, he finds our bus driver has 3 outstanding warrants and must be arrested on site. The company couldn't send another driver for 6 hours. Needless to say, a 5-hour trip took 13 hours to complete, but I made it.
Ouch.
I was driving home to my parents house in Rantoul,Illinois, about 2 hours south of Chicago from Wichita, Ks. Pretty much the same route they were taking in the movie. Itâs usually about a 10 hour drive. Right after I passed St. Louis a snowstorm came in. The last 3 hours turned into 6hrs. I pulled over at a rest stop, took a 20 minute nap and got back on the road. I just accepted it and thought âWeâll, nothing like a little adventure.â I pulled into the drive at 2:30am.
@@McPh1741 Oh that's painful, and intense.
John Hughes once had a less than pleasant traveling experience, and roughed out the idea for this movie in record time. The press release is available on CZcams. Just as entertaining as the movie.
Wonderful Thanksgiving movie! I was an unspottable extra in this movie. It was shot in and around Chicago, and when they asked for people to be extras in the film, I signed up. The group I was assigned to spent two days in a bus station. RIP John Candy
I just had a random dyslexic moment and thought you said you were an âunstoppableâ extra, and I tried to figure out what that might be, for a second.

"Who's Harry Crumb?" is my favorite John Candy movie, not a kids movie, but i watched it a lot on HBO as a kid
This is really an underrated Thanksgiving movie. I watch it every year either right before, during or right after Thanksgiving day. It is a classic. Ok Cassie, you got one more to go, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels". That movie along with this one and Roxanne completes the Steve Martin trilogy of his top films. Interestingly, all 3 of those movies came out in a 2 year span.
LA Story is another one she would love.
@@catherinelw9365 Agreed, as well as "All of Me".

Roxanne is great, but not one of Martinâs top. She would really like LA Story and Parenthood is ten times better than Father Of The Bride which she likes a lot already. Not saying she shouldnât see Roxanne or Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (that one will be very interesting to see her see).
This movie is amazing in so many ways!! Makes you feel so many feels, especially the ending...so emotional. It also bonded John Candy and Steve Martin, they became extremely close friends after this movie! There's also like 2 hours worth of deleted scenes, which most scenes have still yet to be released (locked in a vault somewhere). It explains the scene with the robber...who was actually Neal and Del's pizza delivery person in a cut scene. Del gave a dollar tip in pennies and he went back to rob them. Another cut scene, a rather emotional one and it was Steve Martin's favorite scene is after Del tells Neal his wife his dead. They both go to a diner and Del explains the contents in the large trunk he carries with him, he also explains why he latches onto people. Steve Martin to this day gets emotional when talking about the scene. There's a scene which explains why Del mysteriously has a black eye towards the end of the movie...Neal punches him! The scene is when the trooper pulls Neal and Del over in the burnt car. It was supposed to be a much longer scene. It explained they over-shot Chicago and were actually in Wisconsin! Neal then flips out at Del and they were actually arrested! At the police station Neal is strip searched. LOL!! Then, to make matters worse, Del informs Neal that there was no insurance on the destroyed car that's in Neal's name.....this is when Neal punches him! Also, there was supposed to be a sub-plot during the whole movie where the wife thinks he is having an affair. Which is why she reacts at 25:49...she realizes Del and the whole story Neal was telling her is all true!!! :)
This is one of those films that just baffles me on a creative level. Like, how does one person come up with a script, a film, like this?
The amount of comedic genius of Steve Martin and John Candy are on full display here, but I'm forever amazed at writers like John Hughes and how they can conjure up these kinds of funny and relatable scenarios AS WELL as countless and constantly hilarious dialogue.
PS, the scene in the airport when Steve stares at John and it cuts to that ridiculous, deer in the headlights look with the cab door surrounding him... idk it's so specific but it's the funniest shot in the movie lol
Some of these 80s movie were so amazingly written and acted... you could go from laughing to crying. What a lovely reaction xx
John Candy, "We can laugh about this now", as we survived the whole squeezed by two semi-truck ordeal.
Ahhh Steve and John take a look behind you. I think your car's on fire, 100 miles from Chi-town.
That scene in bed where John Candy and Steve Martin are holding each other while the song, "Back In Baby's Arms" was playing, took six takes to shoot due to the stars cracking up four times and the cameraman twice. The director didn't tell anyone what song was going to be playing, cracking everyone up.
John Candy was in Cool Runnings a true story about the first Jamaican Olympic bobsled team thatâs probably why he said Iâm going back to Jamaica! đđ

Iâm so exhausted that I wasnât sure if I could even enjoy thanksgiving tomorrow. However, watching your reaction to this as made me change my attitude towards it as well. Iâm so looking forward to getting to be with my family tomorrow. Giving thanks for what you do. Have a wonderful day with your family tomorrow! From South Carolina, I will always be a fan and consider you family.
Easily one of the best combinations of comedy and emotion of all time. Itâs one of those movies that can never be replicated.
You know itâs gonna be ?
They tried to replicate it. With Downey Jr. and Galifianakis... nice try but it's not the same.
"Where's your other hand?!..." hahaha... Cassie, there is a zero point zero percent chance that you won't love this movie. Clear a top 10 slot for your holiday movie favorites.
@@kuhpunkt Pretty sure Cassie missed the hand-up-the-butt gag.
John Candy was super wholesome in real life too btw. I love that movie!
The scene where Candy is taking off his jacket and it gets caught had me laughing for a solid half hour. We had to stop the DVD so I could get a hold of myself. I would have been done in a theatre.
One of the best reactions ever.
We got all the emotions. Cassie's laugh, Cassie getting emotional. Even a jump scare haha. Such a great movie glad you got to enjoy it for Thanksgiving
A movie that always warms my heart. Steve Martin and John Candy were perfect. John was a so funny. So funny and sweet. I hope you'll watch It's a Wonderful Life for christmas month. Happy Thanksgiving, Cassie!
I second It's a Wonderful Life!!!
@@catherinelw9365 Third!!
It's a Wonderful Life might be the BEST Christmas movie.. Fourth!
It's a Wonderful Life is a must for everyone! The story never gets old. How much does our life affect other people's lives. I'm tearing up thinking about Zuzu's petals.
I think this is the hardest I've seen Cass laugh on the channel yet.
This is one of my absolute favorite movies in the world. It has so much heart with such great comedy yet teaches some important lessons along the way.
Such a heart-warming movie. Brings a tear to my eye every time đđ€§
Ah man, itâs 1:30am, I just finished work. I got excited when I seen this. I hit playâŠ. And then realized itâs a premiering post. I first watched this as a kid, and thought mehâŠ. (I was 12) After 20 some odd years of life experience, I watched it a second time and I was in tears! Iâll be back tomorrow! Oh look, new firefly reactions! Youâve managed to keep me around a little longer!
That movie was perfect for you. ah ha Seeing John's face at the end before fade to black was such a great homage to him and a good way to remember him by.
In a past job, I spent a lot of time at an aircraft service centre in Wichita. Everyone there had my favourite line memorized
; "train don' run outta Wichita, unlessen you're hog or a cattle; people train runs outta Stubbeville..... snort" lol!! đ€Ł
25:57 Thereâs an added poignancy to this moment when you know that the original story has Neals wife believing throughout that he is having an affair and the âdelaysâ were just excuses to be with the other woman. Itâs not until this moment when she meets Del that she realises itâs all been true and she had nothing to worry about. â€ïž
I donât know if thatâs true⊠Neil did have his hands in between Delâs cheeks.
Cassie, youâre gonna love this one. Steve Martin and John Candy at their best... Yay!!!
The cheerful lady at the car rental desk was played by Edie McClurg whom you might remember as Herb Tarlek's wife on WKRP in Cincinnati.
That guy running the motel's gonna think a smashed up building is no big deal when he gets eaten by a dinosaur.
It's interesting how different people react to things. My brother, parents, uncles, aunts, and cousins laughed so hard watching this at my grandparents' house. We were rolling the whole time. I never once felt a single bit of anxiety. So many younger people these days seem to take ridiculous comedies so seriously that it feels like to me they miss out on some joy that's to be found.
Oh my lord đ You are in for a treat. This is one of my favorite John Candy movies. I love it so much.
Two incredibly talented and funny people. RIP John Candy.
her reaction when that guy spits in his hand and shakes Steve Martin's hand LMAOOOO
