  • In this video will take a closer look at a species of finch that is considered a PARASITE in the bird world. The village indigobird or the steelblue widowfinch (or in U.S. aviculture the Combassou finch) (Vidua chalybeata) is a small song bird belonging to the family Viduidae.

    Very cool and a beautiful species for sure. I wonder if there are other potential host birds that they would/could use. Maybe some australian species that has a nest that resembles the nest of their usual host? Just a thought :)

      @paradiseaviary  Před 2 lety

      Thank you @723darwin, i want to put some whydahs in here also some weavers and other species. The white eyes still haven't done anything but they've only been in the aviary for about 2 months. Let's see what they do this season

  • @breedingaviandinosaurs2728

    Very nice birds. I haven't seen these a lot since import of tropical wild birds was banned in Europe in 2004. It would be very exciting en interesting if you could get breeding succes with them. I'm looking forward to a video of that (u 2 I guess 😉)

    • @paradiseaviary
      @paradiseaviary  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you my friend and don't worry I don't get jealous i know people come here to see the birds not me 🤣🤣 . I'm exited to see if they adapt well to the aviary and lay in the fire finch nest. Keeping my fingers crossed!
      I was aware that Europe had an import ban but didn't realize it was since 2004 😮. With Africa so close I would assume some wild caught still make their way in correct ? We still get imports of different wild caught from africa although the species list always gets smaller and smaller, I'm sure there will come a time when all that stops and there won't be any more ☹

    • @breedingaviandinosaurs2728
      @breedingaviandinosaurs2728 Před 2 lety

      @@paradiseaviary The ban officially came into effect in 2007, but imports from outside Europe had already been stopped earlier to prevent the spread of bird flu. But the import was of course not good for the birds, 2 out of 10 captured birds did not survive the trade. Prices have risen for many species as a result and there are now species that are much harder to find. But that's actually not so bad, bird keepers are much more careful with their birds and are now making serious efforts to breed and conserve species for aviculture. Moreover, people now think twice before purchasing a particular bird species. So we have to make do with captive-bred birds, but every now and then wild-caught birds from Afrika do end up on the market, but the question is whether that is completely legal. So keep up the good work and preserve the rarer bird species for aviculture so that others can enjoy these beautiful species too!

    • @paradiseaviary
      @paradiseaviary  Před 2 lety +1

      Its a shame but very true so many of the imported birds die along the way. Many forget the ones that die in the country of origin while undergoing quarantine and being medicated then again in route to the destination some die and then again when they arrive at the origin facility other pass so i believe its more than 2 out of 10.
      Unfortunetly here many don't take some of these species seriously and i believe its due to how easy they are to obtain because of these imports. Hopefully people start to take them seriously and work more with them before its too late. Like they say you don't know what you have till its gone !
