India's Double Win in 1994 In 1994, India won two of the most prestigious beauty titles : Sushmita Sen won Miss Universe in Manila, Philippines while Aishwarya Rai later won Miss World in Sun City, South Africa. But did you know that the Miss India organizers favored Aishwarya Rai to win Miss Universe that time? Aishwarya was already a famous model before she joined Miss India, her beauty is comparable to a Hollywood superstar. When she joined Miss India, more than half of the other candidates backed out because they believed they have no chance against Aishwarya. Sushmita was a fresh face that time and she also feared losing to Aishwarya that she even told her mother not to attend the coronation night. On the finals night Aishwarya and Sushmita tied in the final round, the first time ever in Miss India history. The pageant rule stated that if ties did happen, everyone in the top 5 would be given another round of question and then the judges will select the winner. The judges gave Aishwarya an easy question (because they really wanted her to win), and they gave Sushmita a complicated question. However Sushmita is more eloquent and she easily answered the question and in the end she won Miss India with 9.41 pts (over Aishwarya with 9.39 pts). Aishwarya cannot accept the results and after the coronation she ran and cried a long time backstage. Even the Miss India organizers were disappointed because they believed they lost their chance of winning their first ever miss universe via Aishwarya. In an interview with Sushmita a few years ago, she said that one week before her departure to Miss Universe 1994, she realized her passport was missing. The Miss India organizers let another model (Anupama Verma) borrow Sushmita's passport for a show in Bangladesh. Then came the big shock. Organisers of Miss India suggested that the Miss India pageant’s runner-up, Aishwarya Rai be sent in her place instead to the Miss Universe pageant. Meanwhile, Sushmita could go for the Miss World pageant. Of course, the proposal made her very angry. The Miss India organizers declared they will send Aishwarya to Miss Universe '94 (because she has a valid passport that time), while Sushmita will process another passport and will be sent in Miss World' 94 later in November. “Because when you win something, rightfully so, you’re not requesting it. So we now have to come together and ensure that this gets done. It’s easy to say ‘Yea, well now we can’t find it. The passport is lost. Miss World is in November. You go later, we’ll figure out your passport till then.’” Sushmita fought over this and said she will not compete in any other beauty pageant other than Miss Universe. Her family asked help from the government (from the late union minister Rajesh Pilot), and gladly she obtained a new passport and competed in Miss Universe. And who would have expected that Sushmita would win the Miss Universe crown that year (despite being a black horse), earning the first Miss Universe win for India. The following day the Indian government declared it the "Philippines-India Friendship Day". Aishwarya Rai also won Miss World later that year, accordingly she won the hearts of the South African people the minute she stepped in Sun City. That's why beginning 1995 the Miss India organizers began to crown two national winners... Miss India-Universe and Miss India-World, both with equal status. India would win three more Miss Worlds that time winning in 1997, 1999 and a triple crown win in 2000. a perfect example of, " don't give up without knowing the outcomes." Sushmita was going to back out of the competition when she found out that Aishwarya was in it, many girls withdraw their names upon finding out, but her mother scolded her and told her that she can't give up without knowing even if Aishwarya is in it she should just give her best, everyone was assuming that Aishwarya was going to win. Sushmita went there and crowned herself at the age of 18.
Here Sushmita was not having much money to buy a designer dress for herself and was planning to not attend the show but her mother told her that all the people are coming to see you, not to your dress.. you have to attend the show And her mother helped her alot and just buy a ordinary simple cloth for a dress..her mother stitched that flower with her hands and for arms she buy a black socks and by putting some elastic in it she gave a outstanding look to her daughter..hats off for her outstanding support ..huge love from Pakistan ❤️

Sush decided to withdraw her form from Miss India when she heard that Ash is taking part in it. She decided to try her luck the next year. The judges actually favoured Aishwarya to win. When aish was second place the miss India organizers were very disappointed because they think they lost their chance of winning their first ever miss universe through Aishwarya. If we observe the crowning and final moments, we can clearly see that the other participants congratulated sushmita and the second runner-up and no one approached Aishwarya to even shake her hand. It was clear that Aishwarya was very entitled and expected to win! She knew the judges of each round( as she was already well established at that point) and was also favoured by the make-up artists. Even in the tie-breaker question, Aishwarya was asked a simple question regarding a soap whereas sushmita tackled a much harder and historic question. The organizers really wanted Aish. They gave Sushmita the hardest tie breaking question so Aish can win, that failed. Instead of helping Sushmita sort out her passport problem, they were all hell bent on sending Aish in her stead. They just won't quit.

Didn’t know about Sush losing her passport… but, my concerns are for the question that Sush got, three questions in total, know about textile heritage, how old is it , and how does your wardrobe looks like…. Its amazing how Sushmita wore a gown with a fabric she and her mother bought at a flea market made by a local unknown tailor , who also used black socks to make her gloves. Sushmita revealed that all a person needs to win is good intention, not money.

If we observe the crowning and final moments, we can clearly see that the other participants congratulated sushmita and the second runner-up and no one approached Aishwarya to even shake her hand. It was clear that Aishwarya was very entitled and expected to win! She knew the judges of each round( as she was already well established at that point) and was also favoured by the make-up artists. Even in the tie-breaker question, Aishwarya was asked a simple question regarding a soap whereas sushmita tackled a much harder and historic question. Well, the joke's on miss India organization cause sushmita nailed it.

Ash is beautiful and intelligent and she answered the question directly. Sushmita is equally beautiful and intelligent. She however showed courage and wasn't afraid to ask what the questions were again to answer them perfectly. The other two contestants seemed lost and did not answer the questions properly. Ash's question was ridiculous "What husband would you prefer?" 🤣 🤣 While Sushmita's was "What is India's textile heritage?" 😲
Sushmita’s question was ridiculous. I think the organizers were trying to make Aish the winner but it backfired on them as Sushmita tackling a much tougher question gave her the higher tie breaking score.

Sush won Miss India barely ahead from top favorite Aishwarya Rai. She later lost her passport and the organizers decided to send Aishwarya in miss universe (Sushmita can still compete in Miss world in November by securing another passport). However Sushmita fought her right and said she won't compete in another contest other than Miss universe. And the rest is history...both Sushmita and Aishwarya won that Year in 1994
The organizers really wanted Aish. They gave Sushmita the hardest tie breaking question so Aish can win, that failed. Instead of helping Sushmita sort out her passport problem, they were all hell bent on sending Aish in her stead. They just won't quit.

Didn’t know about Sush losing her passport… but, my concerns are for the question that Sush got, three questions in total, know about textile heritage, how old is it , and how does your wardrobe looks like…. It’s a difficult question , I believe, related to history and Indian culture… but Sush could have answered it even better… I mean why did she needed a permission to Answer the question in sections… but the way she answered her question in Miss World is WoW… essence of being a Woman, what a beautiful question and how beautifully answered. ❤
