haven't seen anyone mention this yet but at 00:57 when the word for 'villain' appears over the protagonist's face, it's done in such a way that it very specifically censors the blue stain on the corner of their mouth as well as the tear mark on their cheek. basically symbolizing how, when labeling someone a villain, society purposefully ignores the signs of any suffering they may be going through (edit: fixed the timestamp)

Dang, I didn't notice it until now... Thanks for pointing it out! I completely agree and want to take it further by saying that it's a bad part of human nature to want to play "hero vs villain" or "binaries" in everything we see. It's something we all need to be very careful about for the entirety of our lives since it's so ingrained.

Hello I'm Japanese. There are many people who can't understand this song. So I want to tell you what this song means.
A boy in this video, he loves men. He says "if I tell you my real feeling, you must hate me, feel sick in me. So I pretend to be a boy in front of you."
He thinks his love is evil. So this song use word "villain" .
Traffic lights impor boy's feeling. Red light means his women's heart. Green light means playing as a boy. When he lives like he is, he feels better but he can't move forward. So red light.
In Japan, green lights are called "blue light" So red lights growing, his hair is red. Green light growing, his hair is blue.
At last, who is Dr. Duran Duran?
A character in the movie "Barbarella".
A rock band "Duran Duran" acted.
He ploted to destroy the earth and there are a lot of sex scene in this movie.
This trans man in this song worried about sex and society makes him sick.
So, this song use "Dr. Duran Duran" 's name.
    sorry for my poor English.

just to clarify, because the japanese person wanted to explain, but this is how i view it- the song is about a trans boy! he likes men, but society keeps viewing him as a girl, and therefore just a mutated straight woman (0:19). he is dating a (cis) man (from what i can tell in the lyrics) and to everyone else, he's prying on him. he's intruding in his life by "pretending to be a boy" so the gay man would date him (0:34 and 0:43). the song is about how he struggles with these views and the idea that he's "the villian" (also, the japanese word for villian looks a lot like the english word for girl; multiple people pointed this out), until he eventually comes to terms with it all and accepts the fact that people may always think he's something/someone he isn't (2:16-2:56). i'd also like to add that people often associate red with female and blue with male, and throughout the entire video, when he is doubting himself, his hair is red. only when he accepts himself as a man does his hair turn blue (he also looks happy when his hair is blue (2:38-2:40 and from then forth). the stop lights could also be a hint to this). anyways, the facts he has to face are sad, but true, and the important part is that he knows who/what he is, and that no one can tell him otherwise.
(many thanks to all the japanese people that helped explain! i just wanted to clarify)
(this has nothing to do with the explaination, but, 2:16 is a really important message. i think the lyrics here are quite beautiful. so, remember them. this song is dedicated to the great villians)
(as for the explaination, might i add, i considered the possibility of the character being some masculine version of nonbinary, but all the other lyrics point to him being a trans man. atleast, in my eyes. anyways, hope this helped)
edit; okay, so, i was approached with the idea that the song is about a trans woman instead, and how the song ends with the character going back to pretending to be a boy. i considered it for awhile, but in the end, i don't think that's the case. when the song starts to near it's end, it talks about acceptance and how the dirtier the town, the prettier the rainbow. which makes no sense to me, personally, to have the song talk about accepting yourself and just being who you are, despite what others think, and then having it end on a bad note. especially, also, drawing the character in masculine clothes rather than feminine clothes. this is also because the japanese person who explained corrected themselves about the character being a gay trans man, and not a trans woman (i think this is because they were trying to say he's a woman who became a man, or something of the sorts, but translating that can be iffy). you can interpert it how you want, ofcourse, but i'm very positive the song is about a (trans) man. thank you for sharing your theory! i like seeing others' perspective on this. // 10.10.2020; i keep getting comments about how they think the song is about a trans woman. that's fine- interpert it how you wish. i think any trans person can relate to this song in one way or another, so i can't stop how you see this song as being. i just have a strong belief that it's not about a trans woman/nonbinary person for reasons i stated in this comment already. if you wanna see my other anwsers, you can look at the replies in this comment. i also was under the impression that the japanese person had troubles translating their thoughts into english, so that they got it wrong. my bad- i didn't mean to put words into anyone's mouth. anyway, again, thanks for sharing your theories! have a good day.
edit 2; there's so many other good comments about this, too. about how ranpo was a person looking to find as much books about love between two men as possible with their friend, how when the character's hair is blue, he's wearing a male japanese school uniform, how some fish can change their sex, how the part about flowers is asking whether a male-on-male relationship will always be unfruitful, and so much more.. i'd like to, again, thank everyone who shared their theories and helped me realize what the song was about. much thank yous. have a great day, and stay strong!

The line "I wear different clothes and pretend to be a boy in front of you" really hits me because it's something that my own family thinks about me
Even after coming out as trans, they let so clear that they don't see me as a man and that i'm just wearing other clothes pretending to be other person, they even claim that i like women because of the way i dress even after i told them so many times that i like men
So the line it's like what they think, they think that i'm just wearing other clothes and "pretending to be a boy" to make them mad or something
And the line gives me a feeling of empowerment at the same time, like "i'm not afraid of being like this, so i'll do it in front of you"

@@katalinperna8907 Ehh, correction: Gender roles are a social construct, gender itself is in your brain and develops in the womb. Which is how trans people come to exist, their brain develops into one direction while their body develops into the other.
Some non binary identities could actually make somewhat sense (like bigender, having a brain that just developed into both directions somewhat), while others, like agender or genderfluid would be scientifically speaking impossible.
Agender emans your brain would have taken in no hormones of either gender during development, which would end up with a child being stillborn, as it is vital to our development.
And genderfluid... the brain can't just change genders on the fly, let's put it that way.
Some non binary people even admit it doesn't have to do with gender for them, but gender roles they want to reject. They don't consider themselves trans either, in those cases.
All in all, it's still a pretty new research topic, but that's roughly the information that we do have.

It's not at all silly that this song makes you feel valid given how often trans people are genuinely seen and appreciated as people who should not be oppressed in society. This song captures why LGBT people in general sometimes feel disassociated from everyone else along with why they should not be held back by who they are given how one's identity is not determined by chromosomes. As a masculine female who identifies as gender neutral, I feel fucking *good* listening to this, sometimes having the instrumental in my head, so I know exactly how this makes you feel valid.

I love how the line "I wear different clothes and pretend to be a boy in front of you" can be interpreted as someone who is MtF or FtM. Someone who identifies as a boy might dress up and act like a boy because the boy they like might not suspect them of having a crush if they're the same gender. And someone who identifies as a girl might dress up as their assigned gender because they don't want society hating on them. But I like to think that it's about a FtM person just because the last chorus felt like acceptance, especially since the MC wore a boys school uniform and almost looks like they're cackling, as if they've embraced the "villainous" side of themself

And “I am here!” Makes me feel unapologetic about my gender. I remember thinking once to get one of my past dream jobs i’d have to hide the fact i was trans, and that it “shouldn’t be that hard.” I can’t believe past me would hide away such a crucial part of me for the comfort of other people. _About Rampo._ (or Ranpo)
Rampo had a friend, the historian Junichi Ivana, who spent a lifetime researching homosexuality in Japan. During the 1930s, they held a mock competition: who would find more books about love between two men. Rampo was looking in the West, and Ivana was looking in Japan. The latter died in 1945, having published only part of the collected bibliography. Rampo continued his friend's work.
I think that s(he) calls attention to the fact that there were adequate people who tried to understand the nature of such feelings, who saw this as the norm.

This is just my personal take, but I've noticed something; I'm not sure if it's intentional or not, but the katakana characters for "villain" in the video (like in the thumbnail), the way the art style is, makes it look VERY similar to "girl" in English. I just thought that was super cool cause to me, it feels like that this person might've been assigned female at birth (so afab) but identify as another gender now, whether it be male, nonbinary, etc., but present themselves in a more masculine way. But since society still sees them as a "girl," this "girl" to society is the villain.
Just a little addition, but it also feels like to me since the letters are so sharp and almost look like slashes, that our person in question rejects that notion of being "the girl." (Like crossing or slashing something out, like how you would do on paper) But society still holds that against them, as stated before, so them being "the girl" is a topic and a label that still keeps coming back around. They come to accept the term "villain," but the "girl" part of it will always be an underlying theme, just like how it's subtle in the katakana, because society won't change their perspective and see them for who they really are and what they really identify as.
They eventually come to terms with this and aren't bothered by it though! They know who they are and are comfortable with themselves, no matter what anyone else says or thinks (because of the line near the end where they say "Here I am!" as well as the art almost symbolizing they've broken out of their shell and became who they've always wanted to be but was restricted from being who they are because of societal judgments.) They know their identity and gender is still valid no matter how people feel about them, which I think is an awesome way to end the song.
Edit: I came from the original! I just wanted to say that I love this song so much and miy yuu did a FANTASTIC job! I got so excited when I woke up and saw that his cover was in my notification bar LOL I had been hoping he'd cover this song and he did! Much love from the U.S 💜

@@mads1847 Aww, thank you so much for saying that, I really appreciate it! I tried to word things as best as I could and kinda felt like I didn't come across great (mostly because I read it over like a thousand times so it started to not make sense to me LOL) but it's great to hear that it did come across well!
Also, trans fam, aayy! I'm a trans guy myself! c: Listening to it and reading the lyrics for the first time, as well as the art, it just feels SO MUCH like it's talking about a trans guy or a nonbinary person, and I just had to get my thoughts out there xD

Howdy. As a fellow trans person, I've been thinking this song to be more about a straight trans woman.
For example, they reference X&Y chromosomes, and then they say they have to "dress up and pretend to be a boy" around someone. I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound like FtM at all. At least, not from my experience. It felt like more of a show to try and dress up like a girl lol

Not sure if anyone mentioned this: in 0:27 you can see some France/German. "Einige psychische Folgen des anatomischen Geschlechtsunterschieds" (Some Psychical Consequences of the Anatomical Distinction between the Sexes) a writing by Sigmund Freud who formulated theories such as the Oedipus complex and much more. You probably know him! Anyways, the writing mentioned in the MV exhibits Freud's "image of women" and "female sexuality" and at some point he describes a "Penis envy" and "Castration anxiety". It's way too much and complex for me to grasp it completely, so I'm just leaving it here for the smart people to do whatever they want with that information haha! I think i'ts very fitting to the theories of this MV :)
I think it's really amazing for the people involved with this MV to include complex theories such as Freud's into their music. I'm amazed!
