  • Jessica Cox demonstrates how she rides her custom built scarab trike without arms. The three wheel trike features extended handle bars with the gear and brake moved near the peddles.
Jessica is an international keynote and motivational speaker. She is most well known for earning the Guinness World Record for being the first armless person in aviation history to earn a pilot's certificate.
Born without arms, Jessica flies airplanes, drives cars and otherwise lives a normal life using her feet as others use their hands. Convinced that the way we think has a greater impact on our lives than our physical constraints, she chose to pursue a degree in psychology at the University of Arizona. Since then she has traveled to 20 countries sharing her inspirational message.

Hi Jessica, enjoy the ride and make it fun that we do hope you can.
Your fearless attempt would encourage many people to try what they've been afraid.

Hi, Jessica, I hope you are still riding 2 years on, (you seem the kind of person that keeps VERY busy, and may not get the time!). There is a guy called Gary Solomon who hosts an on-line blog called the "Laidback Bike Report," covering recumbent bikes and trikes of all forms, that may be of interest to you, and in early August the subject is the various health advantages of riding recumbents. There is a follow-up planned on looking at machines like your Scarab, that have been adapted, and how 'bent trikes may be uniquely suited for that purpose. "Laidback Bike Report's" are all up on u-tube, if you are interested. In the mean time, keep on putting the rest of us to shame!

Unfortunately, the company went out of business. But really, the bike isn't special by itself. I bought extension handles from a local company that modifies cars for people with disabilities. Maybe if you reach out to a similar local company they can help you pick a bike and how to modify it?

It can be done, that's a given. Start thinking about how you're doing to do it. Then go do it.
