At some point in Death Stranding, you'll need to go toe-to-toe with enemies, and there are a bunch of creative ways you can take down your foes. Death Stranding is available now on PS4 and will be available on PC in 2020.
As you continue through Death Stranding, BTs aren't the only enemies you'll have to worry about. You'll encounter antagonistic humans too, such as MULEs--a band of bandits that steal cargo from anyone who wanders into their territory. There are terrorists too, who are even more dangerous. Dealing with both groups can be tricky, but with the right equipment and strategy you can take out entire encampments.
In the above video, Max Blumenthal details the different weapons and strategies best suited for taking out enemy MULEs and terrorists. You'll encounter MULEs first--as early as Chapter 2--but most of the equipment that you want for dealing with both groups is found in Chapter 3. You may want to beeline it to Chapter 3 as a result. Remember, no matter what affiliation they're a part of, you do not want to kill human enemies. Use less aggressive means when fighting MULEs and terrorists, whether that's hand-to-hand combat or firearms equipped with nonlethal bullets.
If you're not sure you'll enjoy Death Stranding, check out our review. In GameSpot's Death Stranding review, Kallie Plagge writes, "Death Stranding is a hard game to absorb. There are many intertwining threads to its plot, and silly names, corny moments, and heavy exposition belie an otherwise very simple message. That comes through much more clearly in the game's more mundane moments, when you find a desperately-needed ladder left behind by another player or receive a letter from an NPC thanking you for your efforts. It's positive without ignoring pain; in fact, it argues in both its story and its gameplay that adversity itself is what makes things worth doing and life worth living. It's a game that requires patience, compassion, and love, and it's also one we really need right now."

i love how GAMESPOT is elaborating all the complexity about the game. Not like IGN, linearity tsss
Yeah. People should just ignore Ign now. They win just by us viewing their crappy content. You don't like the game? Ok move on. Shouldn't be that hard. Ign are anti gamers at this point
What's funny is that they're milking it hard by putting up some videos. Even though they don't like the game. How desperate is that for views
@@mikaru9342 it's absolutely pathetic. Unfortunately the casuals keep them in business
@@ovoj hahaha the WANNABE hardcore gamers are those who simply just play casually. And whine whenever no generic shooter-based gameplay mechanics are in the game.
Gamespot > IGN, nuff said.
No one gets in the way of my pizza delivery
I always do this for fun. With no cargo on me... I find them and just assault them with Reedus' fists and that kick. It's really fun.
I also go rambo on them with my punches and kicks ahaha. It's incredibly fun!
We got that dog in us! Go loud or go home, ain't no stealth around here. They finna suffer.
I love this game, but I'm not ashamed to say that I'm very bad at it. So I just mash the attack button as I charge the OPFOR while screaming "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!"
you can also do a body charge by holding both L2 and R2 and pressing Square. It takes some Endurance but if you can line it up properly you can stun 2-3 enemies at once. Additionally it guard breaks too. Helps with the crowd control problem and sets up for easier melee knockdowns as they're left vulnerable on contact.
MrVince329 wow thanks
Coming to videos like this and reading comments like yours make me realize how much harder I made it on myself when I first played this. So so so many things I can change on the next playthrough.
@@keving7743 the game actually displayed this hint on one occassion to me. Think it was during one occasion I walked into a mule camp or flipping through tutorial text on a load screen.
@@MrVince329 I've probably missed so many of those hints cuz in this game. But that's what you get with a well made game, lots of options and different actions.
Yeah. Kojima goes really in depth with his gameplay, even death stranding has some of the best
This is a great video, I had honestly no idea combat is getting so complex. I've been playing for like 20 hours and all I do i running away from MULEs. Well to be honest, I just found out that I had to kick them after hitting them with the BOLA gun. I always wondered why they keep coming. Great to see that actual weapons are coming later in the game too, it's just weird that it takes the game 30 plus hours to introduce them. But still. Cool.
Realistically speaking, there's no way for all that tech to be available before the cities and all the specialists that produced them are connected to the network. And to be honest, there's not a single game out there that gives you access to its entire weapons arsenal at the first 5 hours of the game, so...
Sam isn't supposed to be a fighter or hero. Just a man that's pulled into this world and forced to adapt
isnt it funny that the game explains some very stupid details over and over again, but not the fact that you can kick the "bola"d enemies...
If you hit them in the head, they go unconscious, no need to kick them.
@@polisherci I mean to be fair they do squirm around and have a different icon above their heads.
My personal favorite trick: Put a remote stun grenade on a cheap/damage resin (since those are always in surplus), then hurl it over the Mule detector and let them pick it up, once the do, detonate the stun grenade and take out a bunch of them. You can pick up the same damage resin, stick another remote stun grenade on it, rinse and repeat since the cargo won't disappear even if it's damaged. Cheaper, multiple use and more effective than smoke/vog decoy.
People are still saying this is a walking simulator
yes! the best of its kind!
I really like this game but I’m not going to lie to myself and say this isn’t a walking simulator. It just happened to be a really good walking simulator.
JewlzBeats it’s almost like you.... get into vehicles like trucks and motorcycles too! That’s never before seen in a videogame!!!!
Played ist 43 hours. And yes ist is. Dhl trainee programm
Psychohendrix It’s almost like....you are still playing the first half of the game and didn’t get to the snow area yet. Let me know how the driving going for ya once you finally played more.
Things become more and more complicated
The first time they got the machine gun I was like, that is not how I'm used to doing this..
Game spot makes a nice fighting strats footage..began to love this game even more
Use the time slowing down feature when you knock one out to chain slow mo headshots on groups.
That's really clever and underrated
How do you do that
Absolutely excellent help & info. Really appreciate this.
Great info. Well done on the work.
Once you finally get better at the stealth it is just incredible
After 20 years on metal gears, mules are pretty easy to handle. Nice tips man!
So this is metal gear with norman reedus?
Still gonna play it
*and instead of metal gears theres giant tar(?) Giants
Awesome channel 👍👍
Thank you for this! Made me realise I’ve been using the decoys all wrong haha
Great Video, cheers mate😁🇬🇧👍
bu bu bu but buuuuttt walking sim.. *headshot*
haha you sU- *voidout*
This was super useful thanks.
Some things I learned disabling mules/terrorists with trike or truck.
Be sure to have a charger nearby or a long range vehicle. It takes a lot of battery to ram everyone in the camp.
You risk ruining some cargo, but it's a much simpler to use a vehicle if you're not as good with the combat yet.
You can ram the big stationary machine guns to disable them. You want to disable those before the mules get to them. I accidentally killed a mule with a grenade trying to disable a machine gun because mule was too close. Ramming them is easier. You can tell machine gun is disabled when smoke is rising from it.
At first I thought I killed a mule by ramming into him, but apparently not, although IRL it probably would. So Death Race 2000 it is in Death Stranding.
My recommendation is to use a long range truck, the higher the level the better for the super long battery life. That way you can pick up everything in one go. Plus it can ram mule trucks without taking too much damage, it's twice as big. Try and ram the cab section just as mule is getting out, lol.
This is not a subtle method and not recommended for missions where you have to pick up fragile cargo, but in early game, until you've mastered the combat tips in this video, it helps a lot to farm resources.
Oh yeah, one more thing. I think the terrorist camp sensors will ping you no matter what you carry. By the time you get to them you should have plans to fabricate armor and pouches for lots of blood to counter. But again, it's just easier with a big truck. And fun too.
Great video, thank you
So useful. Loving it so far on pc
What a fantastic video
I've avoided the ping by jumping while sprinting too. Precise timing though.
I had that realisation when flying over a ping on a zipline and noticed I didn't give a return ping, took me awhile after that to get the jump right, but it was an awesome feeling using that. Kind of useless later when you have the hologram and ping negation, but very valuable on a repeat playthrough
@@julesmasonlynch So that's why the game told me : Scanner evaded.
@@TheKazuma410P bingo! It's good to get feedback that it worked
Grapple gun, bola, smoke grenades and throwable containers. Sam is future Batman!!!!
Very good thanks a lot
Why can't anyone pronounce "cryptobiote" correctly?
To be fair, I was calling them cryptobites for the last 30 hours of gameplay because of Fragile's accent in the opening. She whooshed right over the o in biote.
You mean "cryobites"? Lol
I just avoid 'em, even if it's a 7 mile detour.
Why not give it a try? Even on hard difficulty the Mules are not hard to deal with.
I’ve been raiding them to fund my roads. I go into a camp and clean it out completely, including their trucks.
@@skynet3d 🤝
This guy Strands
Naw. Beat them up and jack 'em for their stuff. Some orders ask you to go into a MULE camp and recover something. You can get a boatload of materials.
Metal Gear Solid : The Package Pain
One smack with the decoy package knocks them out good.
Playing on the hardest difficulty you can just run in with a case in hand and be unstoppable. This game is super fun but it’s way too easy..truly
Needs a harder difficulty
A bola can annihilate the whole camp. The game’s too easy.
@@Clyne69 what about Ebola?
Another good thing to know is that a MULE/Terrorist doesn't have to be stunned for you to bind them! As long as you're behind them, hold L2 and press R2 to tie them down! Also stun grenades will temporary stun MULEs/Terrorists, and can knock you unconscious if you're not careful and get caught in the blast (I.E. 4:04)
If you fall unconscious, you will be stripped of all your cargo and thrown out. Then you'll have to sneak your way back in and get it back. Although most postboxes are on the outter perimeter of the camp,
Keep an eye on your yellow bar and retreat when needed!
So there IS combat... I was really wondering
of course there is. There's tons of it, if you're looking for it of course. But since the concept of the game is DEATH = VOIDOUT, the focus of the game is not combat. It prioritizes survival. It encourages you to stay away from danger.
@@Cnupoc lol i balls to the walls in combat, i needed those mats for the roads so as soon as i got grenades i started farming BT mini bosses and racking every mule settlement i could! Plus stomping out mule encampments makes it safe for other porters too
There is so many combet, you will wish there was less honestly.
Stun grenades, as advertised, stun enemies... thank you sir!
especially challenging endgame when you want Premium Miscellaneous deliveries for the Trophy achievement when you need to play on hard ... and there is no mid encounter save
I just ram them with vehicles, its so so easy.
Now I just got the power gloves yesterday, haven't tried them out yet
Thanks :)
The first time I encounter mule, it drove me to the mountains in panic. Then, they back out because it started raining. It gave me relief until I encountered BTs. What an absolute experience.
I needed this! Just got knocked out. Thanks baby.
Bola-guns against BTs is a MUST HAVE! :)
wait is there a upgrade for fist fighting a mule i see you can two hit attack a mule with bare hands
You get special gloves later in the game and it makes punching stronger.
Thanks bro! I have just been spaming square everytime I come up to them. I was sure I was doing it wrong and knew that their encounters should be more fun. I'll be sure to come back to this vid
And there are people who say this game is just a walking simulator, let's see if this video helps them see that it's not.
bongo it’s only been 4 days. Do you not have a life?
I was 70hrs lol just can’t stop playing
bongo not counting hours of driving, building, scavenging resources, fighting mules, bts. I think that makes every game a walking simulator.
@@iampaulallen Thanks, you said exaclty what I was about to.
@@sharktales6982 I finished the entire game, and after I got the first veicle I almost never walked again. When Mules appeared I liked to go and take them down by being stealth, and sometimes just punching the heck out of them. After the hematic grenade I would fight every BT. So yeah, if that is a walking simulator, then RDR 2 is too, and many other games.
Awesome video! It may seem like a hassle right now, but you ca never have too many Likes! 👍👍👍
oh my god you can dodge? thats SO helpful to know
i still dont get way this game has some negative reviews... its so fucking good !!!
The stealth parts really feel like MGSV. Any death stranding fans who haven't played Metal Gear Solid, if there are any out there, you really need to check those out.
While running slide into an enemy, it'll them open for an attack.
I you just a gun and have multiple dead mules that need... "disposal"..?
Mule's open bed trucks can hold up to 6 wrapped corpses at a time for "efficient delivery" to the incinerator
What other video? you expect us to go through dozens of your videos just to find it?
Bola gun + Kick = Success
I was stunned by a pack of these guys when I was attempting a delivery via motorbike. They completely locked my vehicle up and did a number on me. When I died, it said I had to go back and retrieve the stolen cargo, and that my weapons were taken to a "mule dump site", or something like that...
What the heck is a mule weapons dump site? Is there any way to retrieve my lost/stolen weapons, or do I just create new ones? I haven't seen anything about this online yet.
Thanks!
Do you know the places where you can send cargo to other people to deliver? That appear as a green icon on your map? Mules camps have those dedicated to the cargo they steal.
It happened to me too and I found the bike and all my weapons on my map inside their territory. I also got my loot back from their postbox and a few other things in there.
Kinda cool how I got revenge on them and took some of their stuff.
@@KKarkatVantas awesome! Thank you!!
@@raingraver5892 nice! Yeah, dude them pesky MULES... thanks again!!
They always dump me on the outside of the camp somewhere with my vehicle and equipment all over the ground. If you have a truck it's a pain putting everything back in..
"Sneak into a mule camp hiding behind rocks and using the odarek scanner"-me OK ill try that with my 70ft high wobbling cargo😏
Thanks for the tips lol I got the Bola gun and used it like you showed and dropped the whole camp then took their truck! 🤣
The first truck I took got stuck in the creek with tons of material in it.. then I went back and they got their other Truck stuck on the cliff..
Ok but like how do i start with only the strand, i literally have no idea how to fight in this game
0:44 you can jump over the scan to avoid being detected you can search it on yt if you don't believe me
Why is it so much harder to sneak in this game than in mgsv? Even with no cargo alerting them to our position?
Great video though. Wasn't sure there was anything I could learn from it but I was pleasantly surprised
Tyler Neal because you are not big boss
You are carrying a bunch of cargo and equipment that will make you stick out like Eiffel tower .
It's realistic, they can see you up on a mountain. I learned you actually have to watch and wait for them to turn around. They will see you if you are in range to use a weapon.
@@thothheartmaat2833 haha thanks for responding! I’ve actually gotten a lot better about sneaking since I posted this three years ago!! Once you get it down and learn how to use everything at your disposal, it really is a lot of fun to sneak around a MULE camp
Edit: plus I’ve also gotten really good about nailing headshots from a huge distance away -even when they’re facing me. Reminds me of when my friend and I spent years playing MGS3, perfecting sniping people with an unsilenced AK-47 from so far away that nobody could hear the gunshots. Ahh, those were the days… lol
does anyone know what the corresponding bindings on PC are? i've tried holding different combinations of LMB or RMB when they attack and have never seen a parry prompt with the strand equipped and/or readied. i also can't bind the MULEs with LMB, RMB, M6, or M7 when I'm sneaking behind them.
literally just figured it out but for anyone on PC, your "ready weapon" command must be set to "Hold down" AND NOT "Toggle" for you to be able to hit the parry window. it becomes very easy after that
I wish the camp would stay unoccupied for more than 1 visit to the your room.
so he has a 2319 problem (monster inc)
1:20 "it's usually not recommended to run into MULEs without better gear"
Meanwhile I'm on my first playthrough going to MULE camps with nothing but fists and excess materials shredding through them
if we can have a cardboard box too, it will be perfect XD
Hideo Kojima's game has so many "hidden" tricks that the game won't teach unless a person playing it try to experience. this is why DS is so underrated, but the only issue I have about Hideo's game is that the game will punish players for murdering lots of people, in MGSV enemies will try to put helmets, body armor and other items for countering the players strategy, in DS killing enemies will make a voidout.
IGN are like the BTs: Stay the hell away from them lol
Fighting multiple MULES is too much of a challenge if you're not fully equipped to take them on, make sure you don't run out of stamina or you'll get beaten.
I’m relatively new to this game and I took down a whole camp, every time I pass by they’re still unconscious on the ground, is this supposed to happen?
It takes a while to respawn.
You beat the game!
1:50 could anyone tell how to do it on pc?
Do they revive or something after you leave the area? cause it would be hell to go through that shit again after you did it already. Seriously do they revive??
Yes. They will revive again but it'll take 30+ mins.
no one can die otherwise a giant hole appears, so you smartly use weapons and a string to almost kill people lol?
Just wanna know how to superman punch
Fun fact
If you have no cargo, the MULEs will just look at you and point for you to leave.
Do you lose blood when get hit by real weapons?
Pure Natural yes
Omer Cora That’s awesome. Thanks for the response.
if you kill all MULES, they won't respawn for a long time if you have an incinerator nearby.
I find the settings very confusing
5:27 It's over I got the high ground.
Get them power gloves to do more dmg
Not playing the game through but does someone mind explaining why lethal weapons aren't used? Does it attract BTs?
Pretty much, more dead equals more BTs and if a BT comes into contact with a corpse it will cause a voidout
If you kill one, it becomes a BT. When a BT touches someone living, it creates a voidout. (Like how matter and anti-matter destroy each other.)
how do you dodge backwards on pc
Build ALL the roads in Chapter 3! After that, ALL the MULE camps will have machine gun turrets and it will be way difficult to loot those.
Does anybody else find it difficult to stealth their way around MULES? I just started the game and don’t have the equipment to take them on in combat so I’m struggling.
You can 1 hit ko a mule by swaying a cargo, when a mule being knocked out there is a slow mo, pressing L2 or R2 to grab their cargo, and then repeat using it to ko the next mule.
蛤釦子 So you can do a chain of KO’s?
@@OMEGAxWARRIOR Yes :D It's very useful for melee combat. Do pay attention to your yellow bar though. Stealth wastes too much time and is not rewarding in this game.
I always do the Bola gun lvl 2 then kick them. That's pretty much the only way I do mule camps. Stun grenades for machine gunners.
The smoke grenades?
So why not use real guns? I can't find this video you mentioned during the video.
I feel like the only person on the planet who thinks MULE combat is too hard
It really makes you FEEL like you're attacking mules
Everyone has to do their parts in the society. Mules collect resources for road work and Sam collects the resources.

I just road killed (I mean road knockout) everyone with my long distance truck.
@Gioco Royeca what I meant is, I road knockout them.😅 but I didn't know you can cause voidouts. I just thought they will be back as bts.
Stun bombs and cargo catapults destroy these guys lol, I love MULEs though. I sneak past them all the time. Or just engage them head on with the non lethal assault rifle or bola gun. They have so much great stuff to take!
Should’ve just named these nerds Packer Jackers 🤷🏻♂️
But they just get back up again, so this is really not helpful. Knocking the out for a minute or two doesn;t help in a large area with 15-20 MULES. And there IS no way to kick or punch them once they are down, at least not on PC. The command doesn't come up.
R2? L2?
THEY STOLE MY SHOES 😔
Im in chp5 and havent dealt with terrorists
Nasty bastards they are, armoured too, don't bother trying to stun them, get high powered weapons and blow them away

thats right!
Is it possible to use a Voidout to destroy a Mule base? Like going lethal or purposely dying on a Mule base? It would be satisfying to reduce those fuck- heads to craters.
I tried. It just reset to a save point.
some one steeling lines from the game not 1m in to the video lol
It's more fun to just steal their truck and ran them over with it. Plus, it can help to carry all their precious resources too. I purposely go to their camp to loot all the ceramic to help on the road construction.
sigh....just smash square button!! Eventually MULEs will incapacitate themselves
I am actually stragling as fuck against mules xD
