- Mary Todd Lincoln’s spending habits received much criticism during her time as First Lady. Under pressure to live up to the expectations of her position, Mary felt the need to spend exorbitant amounts of money to keep up appearances. Mary’s compulsive shopping created many problems for herself, as well as those around her, and led her to accumulate large amounts of debt.

Mary Todd Lincoln's shopping addiction was a symptom of PTSD, as were the rest of her "oddities". It started with the loss of her mother at a young age. Abe was one of the very few people who understood her oddities, depression and frustrations as he suffered from many of them himself. The early days of their marriage was rough at times, not just Abe's long absences from home, but they sometimes argued and lost their patience with each other, yet at the end of the day their shared losses, PTSD, and underlining love for each other actually brought them much closer together rather than apart. They were perfect for each other. After so many loses in her life, especially after losing her husband and her youngest son being the last straw, she naturally never really recovered. She thought her only surviving son Robert betrayed her by having her commented to a luxury asylum. All he was trying to do was keep his mother from committing suicide after a failed attempt at jumping from a window and it was on the advice of her doctors. He didn't know what else to do, he was just trying to save his mother. Non the less, it did serve as somewhat of a wakeup call to Mary and prevented her from completely losing her mind. At least she found some happiness in her last years living with her sister and with her grandchildren, whom she saw regularly despite her estranged relationship with Robert. They forgave and reconciled with each other before her death. If only doctors, Robert, and even Mary could've known then what we know now. Not their fault. They did their very best.

It's a fire screen, actually a fabric panel mounted in a wooden frame. It was used to deflect heat from the fireplace away from someone sitting beside it, while still warming the area.

Shopping addiction is a serious problem. I still struggle to understand how wealthy people can spiral out of control and end up broke, but still somehow manage to continue living in luxury. I must be doing something wrong.
