      as most things it started out as a more simple idea.
      i did cg art as a hobby now since the year 1998 so i knew i could make a whole game by myself if i wanted graphically. even if it has AAA graphics, i'm very confident in that as i have worked in every form of cgi including game projects
      but my programming was still nearly 0. so in 2006-2007 i began to really learn programming. i was done with my most basic indie game engine for fighting game around 2 years ago and i coulda started working on it
      but i weighed the game as a competitor to shovel knight and then i imagined the game as a triple a game. and i have been just trying to program a modern graphics engine for 2 years... lol.
      i decided that i shouldn't just assume programming the video card shaders is too difficult for me to do just because other indie game devs dont do it. and i have come far in learning to do that even if the documentation is kinda all over the place if i'm being honest. i have recently entered no man's land. i ask a question to other programmers and most of the time they can't even help me.
      i know it seems like i wasted a long time just researching things like light pre pass engines.
      but i do think the difference in quality will be worth it

    Here's a thought: We can easily project 3D to 2D while still maintaining some depth information under the premise that "further away = smaller" and "something closer to the camera obstructs something furhter away".
    Could the same thing be done for the 4D to 3D projection? He said in the video that you can either render all things in 3D ignoring the coordinate (like FEZ does it for 2D) or just render a small slice of it (like in his game).
    Wouldn't it be possible to figure out a projection that somehow displaces objects based on their 4th coordinate?
    Also: Could things like an HMD or even a hologram as the render target simplify that, since you no longer have to do the leap of 4D => 2D screen, but can leave it as a "real" observable 3D thing.

    • @zaphim12

    • @bigglessy
      @bigglessy Před 9 lety +3

      Not particularly. To put it this way, a three dimensional object casts a two dimensional shadow. A four dimensional object casts a three dimensional shadow. How do you even begin to represent a 'three dimensional shadow'?

    • @bigglessy
      @bigglessy Před 9 lety +2

      ***** it's far, far more complicated than that. Your shadow under a fixed distance from a light source is always the same area. Same would be true for a 3D shadow. Filling in all the 'dark' space would not remain the same shadow 'volume'.

    • @Nonsequitorian
      @Nonsequitorian Před 9 lety

      The amount of dimensions doesn't really make the mathematics any more difficult. It's just incredibly hard for us humans to understand and visualize it because we live in a 3D world.

    This one surely will be pretty awesome. I could imagine lots of 4D puzzles, that could be done. • @DrDress

    I really hope for this guy that it will be succesful. It will definetly be an interesting game, but will it be fun? I think this comes down to whether or not you can get an intutive feeling for moving along a fourth dimension and if so, how long time does it take to aquire. I think it will be hard as one can more or less only image moving along a fourth space axis by a 2D to 3D analogy (like he does in the video).
    But still a very cool idea and good luck!

    Ah, the eternal question of 'stealing' ideas. If you include people that don't ever implement the stuff they think of, then it's a lot more difficult to argue that point.
    For instance, this sounds incredibly similar to ideas I had a over decade ago but never really acted on it. If I were to implement those ideas now, could It really be said that I 'stole' the idea from this guy, or is it actually just a coincidence that we both had similar ideas?
    For that matter, having watched this video, can it be said to influence my thoughts on my original ideas any?
    Original concepts are messy like that... XD
    In some ways I've arguably had lots of ideas of mine 'stolen'. Except, clearly that's not true, because I've rarely mentioned many of them to anyone.
    So rather than theft, it means that others had the same or similar thoughts as me, and had the determination, skill and resources to implement them, whereas for me they never got beyond being an idea.
    Neither has stolen the idea, it's just a coincidence.
    Anyway, I always did find higher-dimensional geometry fascinating.
    It's not completely impossible to visualise 4d geometry using 3d space, if you think through the logic behind how 3d computer graphics works. (We use projection transforms, perspective, and other tricks to make a 3d image visible on a 2d surface whenever we draw, watch video, or deal with 3d graphics).
    While what the result looks like would be unfamiliar to us, and look strange, it is quite possible to extend these projection methods, and project a 4d object into a 3d volume, which is then projected onto the 2d surface of a screen.
    Very messy, and the result is confusing to look at, but it's certainly possible...
    I used to draw hypercubes all the time. That depends on a very simple trick of perspective, in that you have 4 axes, which logically speaking are at 90 degree angles to one another, but in fact when drawn are at some lesser angle. It's usually the equivalent of a wireframe drawing though, because just drawing the edges of such as shape is already hard enough to wrap your head around, compared to trying to shade it. (also solid geometry would seriously confuse what it is you're looking at even further).
    I've also drawn a few 5d and 6d cubes. (usually cubes because the logic behind the shape is easy to follow. It's easy to see how a point becomes a line becomes a square becomes a cube and follow the logic through into higher dimensions).
    However, past 4 dimensions even a line drawing of the edges of a hypercube starts to get so busy it's hard to follow what it is you're meant to draw...

      The Pancakerizer It uses only *3* dimensions at a time. When you can move in the 4th dimension, it shows the fourth dimension shifting in 2D representation, the character moves from one area, that is the value of the 4th dimension, to another and then going back, now in a completely different dimension in 3D.

      @Nixitur Před 9 lety +2

      The way he showed it, I just imagined each 3D-slice as just being another world that was, say, way in the sky above the original 3D world. It doesn't seem that hard since, unlike, the usual three dimensions, the fourth dimension isn't continuous; it only has an extremely limited number of discrete 3D-slices.

    In a 2D world, switching to a 3D one like he showed in the video, a top view can give the player a map of the relation between his previous location and his possibles steps, in the case of the wall and the girl, the x axis view could see the wall and the girl, but could not see the path. The z axis view could see the wall and the path, but not the girl.
    A top view, however, can see all elements of the game, and work like a map to guide the player's actions. I wonder if in a 4D - 3D scenario something can work like a "top" view, a view that connects both 3D views and give the player a hint of what path to follow. Btw nice concept, I hope to see it greenlighted someday at Steam ;D

    I've been checking up on this game every couple years for a long while now. Can't wait to play it. The only thing that concerns me is whether the gameplay will actually take real advantage of the fact that the world is programmed in 4D. The player could easily understand this puzzle by analogy to time travel, for example. Move to the future where the wall is rubble, travel across the wall, and then move back. The player doesn't actually have to attempt to conceive the 4D structure of the world.
    I hope that later on, the "90 degree rotation" of the 3D world is also a plane that must be explored, leading to a more thorough explanation of 4D structures.

    • @WildStar2002
      @WildStar2002 Před 8 lety

      +Quentin Lightner Time as a vector in 4-dimensional space*time* is only useful as a mathematical abstraction for solving the equations of relativity. Time is not a dimension in any literal sense - clearly far different from spacial dimensions. A two-dimensional universe would still have time - so is it then 3D? No, certainly not. Our universe may contain more spatial dimensions than the three we are familiar with - albeit very small. Referring to time as a dimension is mixing apples with oranges and referring to all of them as apples.

    • @JoseRodriguez-rx4ck
      @JoseRodriguez-rx4ck Před 8 lety +1

      +WildStar2002 I am not an expert but I think you and +Quentin Lightner are quite right, and my opinion is that time is the manifestation of the above dimension, that's why we have time in thes second and fourth dimensions, because there is a third and fifth. So yes time is a vector, we can just using it as that as we are limited by our three-dimensional posibilities. And again is just a thought

    • @WildStar2002
      @WildStar2002 Před 8 lety

      +Jose Rodriguez That's a very interesting way to think of it! I've sometimes wondered if time is *visible* from a higher dimension - when you start talking about what are called "world sheets" (I believe) where events in space-time might be stacked together in higher dimensional spaces. The problem for me is directionality - you can't go backwards in time.

    So there's the main world view of 3D, then you can switch to a view where only a slice of that main world is being shown and you can run around the outsides of that slice in regular 3D and go in to the areas of the slice with which you don't clip. And those "outside" areas on either side of the slice are just other levels that exist in the same coordinates as the main 3D world which you can switch to. So it's like getting inside a closed cube by only rendering a slice of that cube like a slice of bread. And not rendering the ends. But to get inside that slice of the cube you also render some space on either side so you can run around to see that slice from the side. And those sides are also a place to stand that will result in you switching to another level that exists in the same coordinates.
    I think I get it, and if that's what it is, it's cute.
    But is it 4 dimensional? Or is it 3dimensional. And there's 3 game maps in the same space. Which you switch between through that narrow clipped rendering of the primary map which lets you run around the edges of it, and the edges are your means of switching to one of the two overlayed maps?
    When I think fourth dimension I think tesseract. I think of the difficulty flatlanders have of understanding the third dimension being the difficulty we have of understanding the fourth dimension.
    Is it just 3 game maps in the same physical space, with a transitional area that's an oreo of all 3 with a clipped slice of the primary map as the cream and the other two maps as the cookies on either side?
    Or have I completely misunderstood it?

    I really hope the game will have weirdly rotated 3D objects.
    So, for example, that house is a 3D object entirely in one slice. However, there's no reason it couldn't be rotated so that each 3D slice would contain a slice of the house. Maybe the game would even allow the player to do such rotations on 4D objects. A 4-dimensional cuboid that was 2 wide, 1 high, 1 long and 1 in the 4th dimension could be rotated, so that, instead of looking like a 2x1x1 cuboid in _one_ slice, it looks like a 1x1x1 cube in _two_ slices.
    If the calculations that the game performs are truly based in four dimensions, both of these things should be simple to perform and would make the game even more interesting.

    I wonder how exactly the levels and the especially the 4th dimension are designed. Because it looks like he made just different parallel worlds with a teleporter hub he called "the 4th dimension" which he could have done in a month with existing engines. Hard to tell if he found a really hard mathematical way to do stuff that would be a lot easier to do in a boring oldfashioned way. I guess we'll have to wait for the finished game.

    I was really hyped when I saw the first videos on it (long time ago). But the more I watch on it, the more it comes across as a brilliant engine, but not necessarily a great game. The animation transitions are out of this world. But all the gameplay examples that have been shown so far are quite tedious and don't really introduce interesting puzzle options. Look though all the 3d worlds, pick the one that gets you some progress, repeat? I'll still definitely get it when it comes out, though. Good luck!

    I've already seen a 4d game before. It was a game made in Java with very basic geometric graphics. You had to move a block through a hole without being seen by another block. There was a 2d mode, a 3d mode and a 4d mode. The 2d mode was of course very easy and the 3d mode was a bit harder. They were intended to get used to the controls and projection. But even after quite a while I found the 4d mode really hard. I think it had a perspective projection instead of the slice method from Miegakure.

      In Super Paper Mario, you can go to the 3rd dimension and then have a _3D view_ on the level, where as in his case, the player never has a perspective in a higher dimension. Super Paper Mario should _still_ be in a 2D world after he rotates in the 3rd dimension. He doesn't do that dough. He doesn't even rotate.

    Eh...I'm not convinced by this. I absolutely loved Fez but rotation of the game world through a 4th dimension here looks an awful lot like a trick, it's not mathematically structured, you're just teleporting from place to place.
    Traditionally the 4th dimension would be time, and it sort of looked that way with the wall and the rubble, the rubble possibly being the wall which has collapsed in the far future...if that's the case then it could be interesting.

    • @IceMetalPunk
      @IceMetalPunk Před 9 lety +11

      That's the fourth temporal dimension; it wouldn't work quite like this game if that were being used. This is instead the idea of a fourth spatial dimension.

    • @Frosty-oj6hw
      @Frosty-oj6hw Před 9 lety +2

      IceMetalPunk Which to our knowledge doesn't exist, only as a mathematical concept by simply adding a 4th coordinate to all vertices.
      Something tells me if I check the source code for this game it wont have a well crafted 4th dimension represented in the maths, but rather a cheap trick to simply transport the player from place to place.

    • @Kahadi
      @Kahadi Před 9 lety +14

      actually, common science says that the 4th dimension is a spatial dimension. actually, up to the 9th dimension are all spatial dimensions, with evidence (don't ask me for the evidence, as I didn't understand it. while it is difficult to explain, think of it this way: you are switching which spatial dimensions you are occupying. so instead of just occupying X, Y, and Z, you can switch it to, say, X, Y, and V (with V being the "fourth dimension"). since the wall only occupies the X, Y, and Z planes, when you are in the X, Y, and V planes, the wall doesn't fully appear, instead only appearing in the X and Y planes now. so it has length and height, but the width is now gone, making it look like rubble. or perhaps the coordinates along a specific plane switched from you new perspective, so while Y was height in XYZ and X was length, Y becomes width and X becomes length in VXY, again making it look like rubble. or the rubble is in the equivalent spot in the other dimension, perhaps being the previously unseen V dimension of the wall. just think of it similar to his 2D and 3D example and consider how different an object looks when you can't see all of the dimensions at the same time

    The developer says you can't represent a 4D world on a 2D screen but that's not true. You just use projection. The same mathematics that turned the 3 dimensional world into a 2D image you can extend to four dimensions. You just have to project the 4D world into 3D and then the 3D world into a 2D image which is displayed on the screen. Most hypercube representations are based on projecting 4D to 3D to 2D and then displaying the 2D.

      Nonsequitorian I can imagine 2D projections of a 3D cross-section of a sphere as I'm passing it in 4 space? I should add how I do it. If you use a line to scan the distance between the edges of a 2D by with uniform unchanging motion by moving the line in a direction perpendicular to it you can imagine the intersection starting by getting larger very quickly and then the rate at which it gets larger decreases to the point it stops (which is when your line is in the middle of the circle) and then it goes in reverse shrinking faster and faster to the point it dissapears. Now use that image of that line getting bigger and then smaller to scale a sphere and you have a way to approximately visualise moving in 4D space past a hypersphere with uniform and unchanging motion!

    • @Nonsequitorian
      @Nonsequitorian Před 9 lety

      Look up a 3 Sphere, it doesn't look spherical. Remember that a sphere is by definition the shape created of all the points that are equidistant from a central point. Now remember that this central point exists in 4th dimensional euclidean space that we can't see.
      What that means is that it looks more like the 3d representation of a wave than it does like a sphere in some cases, and then in others it takes up infinite 3 dimensional space. It doesn't follow the same, neat hypercube rolly polly thing/
