    Appreciate the work as always. I realize it’s an unpopular opinion but I think the story is leagues better than the first but is told in a more confusing and fragmented way. It might be because I’m very into that period of history so I know a good 80% of the characters already but seeing how the mosaic all fit together by the end of the final DLC, and seeing what comprised the legend of ‘Hideyoshi’ in this universe was actually quite moving for me. Fortunately it’s entirely vestigial to the main draws of the game!

    One thing to mention about how the game feels on PC vs PS4. The game(s) have a certain release cadence that plays into both how they ARE designed and how they WERE played. Often there were months in between releases, with each release bringing in a new difficulty level in addition to the new missions. The hope with these games is that you'll spend time in each difficulty creating, changing, or refining your build. If this is done the health bloat is much less noticeable (no boss will take more than 3-5 minutes for someone who does this with one of the many 'endgame' builds). When this is not done, everything feels like a slog, and the bloat can be overwhelming. Nioh2 released with all DLC available on PC so there wasn't a built-in wait between each difficulty. Additionally, this game also takes the 'pick one move and make it awesome' idea from ARPGs in addition to the loot explosions. Mortismal's gameplay does not show them using the high damage moves often. With the axe, this would have the player seeing high damage hits more often and in multiples (11k for single and 3-5k for combos on dotw). Nioh 2 (compared to the first game) is much less forgiving to those who don't adapt to this style of combat, and it would behoove new players to find a build they like from guides online (Or identify a fun move and find gear to support). This does mean if you're someone who likes to find their own way through games that you will probably have a worse time than someone who found a build they enjoyed online. Finally, while ninjutsu was incredibly broken in the first game, it is much more reigned in for this iteration, while Onmyo has gone from mediocre to amazing in its stead. All of the good builds online use some aspects of both to buff themselves or debuff the enemy, so expect to have your specialized weapon backed up by a general support package from Ninjutsu/Onmyo. Great review nonetheless.

    Phenomenal review. I just started Nioh 2 recently, and I’m currently around level 80 (early/mid game, I suppose). Having a lot of fun… I really enjoy the visceral/impactful combat & initial challenge. However, I will admit that missions do seem to become rather repetitive (even at my point in the game), making me wonder whether or not I would really want to sink “hundreds” of hours into it. Interesting that it seems that the game doesn’t even truly start until NG+ and on. I’ve played/completed every souls game & love this genre. I still look forward to picking it up and playing at for 1-2 hours at a time. Thx for the review!! 💪🏻🔥👍😎

    There are several armor sets in Nioh 2 exclusive to the late floors of the underworld.
    You start fighting bosses in pairs or 3 in a roll later on. More reused Nioh 1 boss, which I didn't mind because I didn't play Nioh 1.
    I really enjoyed the Underworld in Nioh 2 overall. I felt challenged by it in ways previous difficulties couldn't and basically ended up mastering the game with my preferred weapon, the Splitstaff.
    What I did not like was the loot frequency. Even if you use the filter to only pick up Orange rarity weapons, you still get like 100 per floor. With a 600 inventory limit, it fills up fast and takes you away from the action to soul match, store weapons, etc. I had a particular bad personality for dealing with this so I was always agonizing over what to keep

    I really enjoyed Tokichiro when I played Nioh 2. Mainly because of his overall outlook on the world. He doesn't want to fight and kill, he hates that shit. You are first introduced to him by him showing up and saving you from a demon rage, and quelling your anger. Then you see his main motivation is profit, but he's not evil about it. He just wants to be wealthy, and would like to do it without anyone dying. And this is reinforced in a later mission, when you are trying to get wood to build a fortress for your lord. It didn't really hit me until that scene, when you fight the forest spirit and beat it, and then Toki rushes up and purges the corruption from the spirit. The look of satisfaction and joy on his face as he sees the spirit going back to it's normal state, without the evil corruption, genuinely touched me. Especially when the other main character shows up next to him and asks "What is this then?" And he proudly proclaims "Victory! The Tokichiro way! Where nobody has to die!" And i dunno, just something about that just made me love him. I'm always a fan of non-violent, pacifist characters and games that allow for that option. I know it's not how Nioh works as a game overall, but for Tokichiro, it IS how he tries to operate. And then at the end of the game, when a particular fight is going on, and he's helping you, it was just done so well that I thought it was an awesome way to portray the character.

    On Demon+ difficulty game expects you to use confusion mechanic actually. Hence the hp scaling. As for yokai forms, Brute counter can counter all attacks, but need to trade with some. Phantom/Feral can't counter some attacks at all. Generally you need to run Feral/Phantom+Brute, because game expects you to switch between the two on the fly during combat to counter.

    • @ANDELE3025
      @ANDELE3025 Před 3 měsíci

      Phantom can block effectively all even if it can't actually do the counter on a good chunk, Feral tho 100% can dodge all attacks even if aoes, bolt spam and high tracking attacks will sometimes fully ignore the afterimage.
      You can run pure of any of the 3, but why ever give up a option of extra dodge and combo extenders for a block unless you like the Phantom form look (which i cant blame anyone for, it is very cool) or want to do a challenge run (no consumable use, no damage taken or no core+no weapon parry runs for example).

      @mpurratorapply 2 elements on the enemy. Bonus points if you can apply water (20% defence reduction) and then add for example purity, which creates confusion (50% defence reduction, for total 70% if you applied water too). Demons won't enter dark realm if confusion is applied right before you deplete their ki too for the full duration and will be unable to regenerate ki, humans regenerate ki very slowly. Can keep adding 1 element to refresh duration. Keep in mind corruption and purity negate each other, so they don't cause confusion, although you can apply purity and let's say fire to start confusion and then add corruption to refresh confusion (purity status will go away tho). So you can easily go Purity+ Water > (confusion) > Fire > Lightning > Corruption.

    • @TheVDaddyo
      @TheVDaddyo Před 3 měsíci +1

      Agree re: “lack of sense of progression”.
      Once I got over the initial learning curve, the difficulty hasn’t been noticeable (steamrolling early/mid game right now). Re: gear, not much of an incentive to keep tempering/leveling the same weapon… When you get increased level gear with each mission. However, I did grind the obsidian armor set and will probably run that for a while.

    • @Lahdee
      @Lahdee Před 3 měsíci +5

      Another common issue is sticking with old gear for too long, most of your damage comes from the level of your gear and very little comes from your stats. So if you are feeling weak and squishy then perhaps looking at switching your gear to gear dropped in the current mission will give you the boost you were expecting.
      Also a fairly common mistake from souls players is thinking armor to be mostly cosmetic, the damage reduction from light to heavy armor is very noticeable. Even if the "defense" number is the same the "vs physical" is different. If you have a light piece that gives 100 def and 1.0 vs physical and a heavy piece that is 100 def and 4.0 vs physical then the heavy piece will still mitigate more damage than the light piece.

      @@RicochetForce"getting killed by same enemies" was more in the sense that the mobs that I killed in say 3 axe swings, still took 3 axe swings to kill. I have no problem the game being difficult (sekiro is my all time fav) but it felt like the player vs enemy curve was just constant throughout.
      Also I like complex combat systems, but not a fan of the other convulated systems (which I believe isn't important for first playthrough, but I can't help but get confused in them)

    To use the American Revolution as a comparison point, you'd probably need to be able to describe all the significant battles in order, name most of the generals and big names involved + their most important character traits too... My favorite yokai form has always been the brute too. The burst counter is very easy for me to pick up because it's really just a smack attack and all you have to do is bop the enemy while they glow red (as opposed to waiting to be attacked).
    And the kusarigama is hilarious. I didn't even know about it until I played this game (I think it was in Nioh 1, but I've never played that one). Most of the time, you're trying to pull the enemy (human ones, anyway) towards you with the ball-and-chain and then hit them with combos from the scythe. The concept of actually trying to tie somebody up with that in a live battle is just absurd, so I had to go look up live demonstrations with the real thing. Sure enough, all anybody is trying to do when their opponent is actually fighting back is to bash them with the the weighted ball. There are some pretty ridiculous theoretical demonstrations out there where they do yank away somebody's sword with it, but the guy holding the sword is in on it just as much as the guy with the kusarigama.
