I live about 15 miles from Olympia. I met Colin before. I met Peter Davison who was great wonder how he really feels! If I could be bothered to go in November it would be only to ignore blooming Ncuti who is rubbish! I truel y hope no one nor their children will pay! I am actually really sad that RT D is using the programme for his own sexual message. Not anti gay or anything live and let live not indoctrinate!

My abiding childhood memory of seeing Warriors of the Deep the first time back in the mid 80s is indeed that whole sequence with the Doctor swimming in the tank, desperately in search of a way out. Everything else is a total blank. Warriors really needed a hands-on director like Peter Grimwade or Graeme Harper to break the house rules and treat the story like a film rather than another piece of BBC drama. That said, I do feel sorry for Pennant Roberts, since this thing came close to being another Shada, which he'd directed previously, and it's not his fault that they lost a couple of weeks in production time. And he's good with other stuff - earlier Who episodes, Blake's 7, etc. How hard would it have been, though, to have said to the lighting crew, 'Make the Seabase look like the interior of a submarine'? They'd have probably done a great job with it.
Even then though, the story just isn't properly fleshed out. Johnny Byrne wants to write an action-based story, but he doesn't quite seem to know how to do it; a more studied drama like The Keeper of Traken is clearly his forte. The Sentinel 6 scene is a great bit of tension, but just feels like it's there for a bit of jeopardy, having only a tangential relationship to the marine-based drama that ensues. Terrance Dicks spends a lot of the time in his novelisation filling in the blanks that would have helped us care about characters and situations on screen, for example why the Sea Devils defer to the Silurians, why humans are fighting their new Cold War underwater, why Solow, a doctor, is willing to sacrifice lives for her ideology, why Maddox is such a wreck. Ironically, even Dicks's novelisation clearly comes from the period when he's churning out a book a month and lacks the finesse of his earlier work.
What Would Ncuti Do in this story? Lasso the Myrka to the airlock door with smart rope, then challenge Icthar to a twerking contest. As he gyrates around the Silurian leader, whose expression of disgust is strangely visible despite the rigid perspex mask, the last survivor of the Silurian Triad delivers the final line: "You know, Tarpok, maybe going back into hibernation's not such a bad idea. Let's give it another hundred years. I'm sure there'll be another way."

I actually liked this ep but agree lighting was too bright. As a ABC tv designer in Australia in late 80s - 90s it was often so hard to convince the Studio tv lighting dept to do darker it was lights on!
The OB shoot were done with a different filming team so we also had that as well..
( OB meaning Outside Broadcasting had a separate camera team to studio ) yeh mid 90s ideas changed I remember having serious discussions with about shadows etc they were VERY old fashioned so I would say BBC probably same locked mentality we had those must have tea brakes with tea ladies till early 90s etc & we were very BBC.. but still the director could have been stronger in many ways for this ep but High Ups ruled..& costumes look like Liquid Sky 80s film. Love Janet's look .❤ yes the Myrka was a Smirk & Jerk for me😊
15th doctor over it & cannot imagine him in any classics the assitants would do it all & he couldn't handle the old work load the old doctors did..
    Cheers team❤

This was a fun discussion to watch, certainly.
For me sadly this story resides in the irredeemable category for me, beyond saving, should never have been commissioned, and pretty much epitomizes what you call 'fanficion too far'.
I do get the excitement that would've come from the announcement of the Sea Devils' return back in 1983, but the final product only proves right the producers the show had before JNT who knew it was wiser to leave the past in the past. The Silurians and The Sea Devils had iconic endings which should've stood rather than having their memory sullied.
Going back on their endings opens up far too much of a can of worms. Not least the fact that it requires the Doctor to go from being best chums with the Brigadier a story ago, to suddenly acting like he never forgave him or humanity for what he did in 1970. And then of course there's the whole retconning about 'the hand of friendship' which just doesn't add up.
I do unfortunately think this is one classic story where comparisons to modern Doctors are redundant. This is one story where there is no difference between the Doctor of old and Jodie's version. Both equally weak, sanctimonious, sentimental and useless, and both practically telling the viewer to go look elsewhere for a hero worth rooting for.
I go into some of my many issues with the story in my own video "1980s Doctor Who- An Eccentric Decline", mainly in the context of it representing Eric Saward going completely wild with the body counts and misanthropy.

Yes I like to focus on controversial classics rather than those we all agree on - more scope for debate

As you know Warriors was affected by the 1983 general election which took valuable pre-production time away from the story. This could explain the problems relating to the Myrka. The direction is flat which is surprising as it was Pennant Roberts. I think the story/script is decent base under siege stuff. Ultimately it doesn't quite come together. It's a decent effort, but a missed opportunity in my opinion.

The review of current news...Well, I continue to roll my eyes at the presumption of Gatwa at the coming convention. Were Gatwa present in this story...all the tropes of his 'undoctorlike' performance are legitimate. He'd not have performed here any better than he did for RTD. As for the opportunity in Warriors from the Deep: This narrative had a great deal of potential but wasn't able to meet the promise of the imagined story. So it rather became a 'missed' opportunity, a victim of events going on around the production. I rather like the end when, sometimes tragically, nobody lives. Sometimes all the choices are bad choices, but you still have to choose...Truly, "There should have been another way..." What if there is no other way?

I think it's shameful. These people are actively exploiting the very people who keep them where they are. In that position, I'd be saying, here have my autograph and thanks for your support. Gatwa and his ilk are disgraceful hypocrites Having said that, anybody who pays those prices to simply talk to people like Gatwa, basically deserve all they get. Still, each to their own. I wouldn't give that guy the time of day.
