  • Kalamata is a major town and beach resort in the Southern Peloponnese, Greece.
    Here we explore Kalamata's vibrant Beach, Harbour, Seafront and Marina.
    Popular in the summer with holiday makers and vacationers, it is also busy as a commercial hub and shopping destination in the winter.
    The major attraction is the beach, but Kalamata also has the benefits of a Byzantine Castle, a Cathedral, a medieval old town, a modern commercial shopping area, a Marina and Harbour, and uniquely a Municipal Train park!
    If you are touring the Peloponnese, or perhaps looking for an extended day trip from Athens, then Kalamata is worth considering as a base for exploring the southern Peloponnese, with The Mani Peninsula, Koroni, Methoni and Pylos all easily reachable.
    With great transport links to Athens, via fantastic roads, for car or regular bus. The marina and Harbour are also a destination for sail boats in the summer, plying the coast and the Aegean.

    Ferries can also be taken to Crete from this Kalamata. The town is a good base for visiting the Mani Peninsula, Koroni or Sparta.
    The town is also famous of course for the Kalamata olives, eaten world wide.

    Kalamata is an excellent choice not only for summer vacations but also for year round living, a relaxed, no-stress life style! Kalamata also offers the top quality olive oil and the famous Kalamata olives!

    Been going to this area for over forty years. When I was a student did the islands; the mainland is so so much better. Now we visit every year with children and grand children. Great video, thank you.

      The whole area is worth visiting if you have a chance, either down into the Mani Peninsula, or along the coast south and then up to Coast Navarino. It is spectacular.

    If you fancy a swim in the sea at Kalamata be prepared for the Garra Rufa. When you stop swimming the fish will come and nibble at your legs. It doesn't hurt and some people claim it's good for you, indeed the Garra Rufa is often called the doctor fish. It's just a little surprising when it happens, and if you go up to chest height, it will definitely happen.
    Not so long ago people were paying good money to sit with their feet in a tank in one of those "fish pedicure", spa-type places - so look on it as a holiday bonus.

      Agree, there is a place in Nafplio with a fish foot tank…. Though I think the fish bite you all over the Peloponnese. I agree, it can be a bit of a surprise at times… not always my favourite, I try to keep moving to avoid it often.

      I covered it in a previous video, this one was specifically about the seafront - Kalamata, Town, Beach and Olives, more of a look at the history and town, love that you are enjoying watching all my vids though, thank you and always good to learn, I can only present what I know, and I am only an expat here, never know as much as a local

    Brilliant and comprehensive video. Thanks. Looking to stay in Kalamata for five days and to use it for day trips to surrounding areas. Seems Greek beaches are rockier than South Florida beaches. 🌴Many more private beaches

    • @GreeceExplored
      @GreeceExplored  Před rokem +1

      Thank you. Generally in the Peloponnese beaches are rocky. Many are small shingle, which I personally prefer, but many are also sand, especially in the south west… videos coming in the next few weeks

    Thanks for the hot tip on Casa Marina. When I eventually make my way there, and I hope to some day, will definitely check it out 🙂. To me Kalamata is about the eponymous olives which are so delicious. Are their celebrated olives an especially big thing in the town, or do they regard it more like an interesting footnote?

    • @GreeceExplored
      @GreeceExplored  Před rokem

      The olives are important, but more as a commercial activity and a food rather than being widely influential in Kalamata vacation life itself. There is a monument to olive pressing in the main square. Unless cold pressed, the olive and fruit factories are actually pretty polluting.

    Another great informative video Andrew. We really enjoyed our stay at Kalamata and are looking forward to returning. It was good to see all the places you mentioned in your videos. Does it get really busy during summer?

      It is packed in the summer… really busy. I have other videos coming on other resort villages in the South West Peloponnese in the next few weeks. Then I have to do some Uk vids as I am going on vacation there, perversely!

      @@GreeceExplored also there are not beaches for Greeks and for foreigner tourists. There is not such a think here in Greece. If think that you notice something like this, it's mistake.
