The major attraction is the beach, but Kalamata also has the benefits of a Byzantine Castle, a Cathedral, a medieval old town, a modern commercial shopping area, a Marina and Harbour, and uniquely a Municipal Train park!
If you are touring the Peloponnese, or perhaps looking for an extended day trip from Athens, then Kalamata is worth considering, with great transport links to Athens, via fantastic roads, for car or regular bus. Surprised to see the lack of graffiti considering how ubiquitous it is in Greece but are the shopping options even better than Patras?
I think the shopping is a good as Patras, I prefer it because I find it easier to navigate, and as you say, they look after the place.
