In France, and in most of Europe I think, we don't pay for anything by weeks, we pay by months. The wages/salaries/incomes are received monthly and all the bills are paid monthly (in like, 99.99% of the cases). So that's VERY complicated for me to really have an idea of the cost. I get that it would make more sense for Us citizen "at a glance" though.
US person here and we pay all our bills monthly! However, depending on where you work and if youâre a salaried or hourly worker, you may get paid weekly, biweekly, or monthly. I believe he just split it into two weeks to make adding together his expenses more easily.
I was also thinking that if you DO want to calculate the weekly costs you have to multiply your monthly cost by 12 and then divide it by 52 because not every month has exactly 4 weeks.
I'm a US citizen and I yelled: "Just figure out how much it is per month!" I think it's because, as he has admitted, he doesn't budget haha-so he doesn't know how!

I feel like I gain so much wisdom from every thing you say, please continue making many more videos on your opinions of life and other topics! I feel you are so knowledgable.
Only Americans who live in Southern California (like me) or New York think it's cheap in Paris. And anyway, I don't agree. I was there. I don't even think it is less than Los Angeles, I think it is probably comparable to Los Angeles. His rent is 995 euros, which is $1172 for his tiny studio with no full kitchen. In Los Angeles you'd at least have a full kitchen for that cost.
I live in Geneva (Switzerland), and my expenses aren't that much per week. I just checked and apparently the cost of living index in Geneva is 27,26 % higher than in New York. I guess I don't just spend that much money. I rarely go to restaurants, I have a coffee maker at home etc.
Just wanna point out how you make videos on such important, authentic topics for anyone around the world. Always a pleasure to watch. + that editing and shades are the cherry on top
Iâve always lived in Paris, and what I spend the most on are those GRO-CE-RIES like? Thereâs only the tiny express stores so everythingâs more expensive and since I canât just drive to a store and have to carry my shit, I go grocery shopping every single day, itâs a freaking pain. Also just sayin, if youâre looking to move to Paris and this scares you, just saying spending so much isnât a default itâs all about lifestyle! I personally spend around ~500 a month excluding rent.
kanekiji i mean you can, but it gets heavy and Iâm weak as fuck haha. I also always walk to the grocery store bc I hate having my groceries in the metro for some reasons? Thatâs how irrational haha
I live in the center of Paris, and I'll give you a tip on how to spend less money on groceries: Try Carrefour Drive, you pay the suburban prices, it's like 20 to 30% cheaper than Franprix or Monop', it's a free service, you just go pick your groceries in a Carrefour Market near you, it reduced my bills so much it's crazy. :)
Me, a Colombian girl, noticing how Damon spends more than the monthly minimum wage for Colombians in just A WEEK, and he does it to survive. Like, even when he's responsible with his finances it is too much to process for me who wants to live in Paris đ€Ż
@Winyl I'm well aware of that, however, the minimum wage here doesn't make up for the cost of living. See, Colombians get paid 8 to 9 dollars for 8 hours of work in a day. That's far from fair.
In France minimum wage is approximately 1200 euros per month, which represents 5 000 000 pesos as of today. Plus being French and having lived in Colombia, prices are a lot cheaper if you compare it to the minimum wage. A restaurant in Colombia is usually around 30.000 pesos, but in France itâs around the equivalent of 70.000 pesos (at least when I was there before the Covid made the Colombian peso weaker)
In reference to what you were talking about at the end of the video, the sad thing is some people work very hard and are still in poverty. Unfortunately, capitalism doesnât allow everyone who works hard to flourish, even though many people believe that to be true. I totally agree with your philosophy on money, though. Iâve found that even as I start to make more money, my happiness level is about the same and the amount of problems I have is more or less the same.
I love these types of videos, even though it's hard to take every financial aspect into account. Even though we'd have different lifestyle and make financial choices, it's good to have a reference point from someone our age. Yay
Love the message of this video! Reminds me of this quote: "The less you eat, drink and buy books; the less you go to the theater, the dance hall, the public house; the less you think, love, theorize, sing, paint, fence, etc., the more you save - the greater becomes your treasure which neither moths nor rust will devour - your capital. The less you are, the less you express your own life, the more you have, i.e., the greater is your alienated life, the greater is the store of your estranged being. Everything which the political economist takes from you in life and in humanity, he replaces for you in money and in wealth"
Chris Nice quite and I agree to some extent, I do believe in spending money to do hobbies, socialize, see art, support shops I respect, treat loved ones, travel with awareness... But what our society usually encourages is for people to spend whatever remains on possessions, not experiences, and most of them are superfluous and overpriced. I intend to be frugal for the next years, not because I want to make a pile of money, but cos Iâd like to buy a house one day, in a region that is massively deserted tho quite beautiful, and I refuse to work overtime just to be able to spend more.
@@gingersal8052 I think your situation aligns with the spirit of the quote! The money you extract from your labor is in essence an alienated abstraction of you under capitalism. So if you want to buy a house with it, more power to you, but make sure you enjoy your life because your labor may define you in a capitalist system, but it doesn't ultimately define your life.
@@chris8915 yes definitely if I were to have a house it would be credit free and to be able cultivate vegs, and organize some projects with the region around.

as a french person moving to Paris in a few weeks... let me tell you that's THE most expensive city of France

I agree with the cafĂ© thing, I donât go to a cafĂ© for coffee at least not JUST for coffee, I go because itâs probably really nicely decorated and I genuinly feel that I feel better and have deeper/more enjoyable conversations at cafĂ©âs rather than at home. Change of place is good guys.
Paris coffee shops must be packed with CZcamsrs working on their films.
Damon out here looking like tony stark with those glasses. We stan.
Down to Earth with Zac Efron: The woman in charge of the Parisian water said that citizens aren't required to pay for water anymore.
I think thatâs only drinking water in public and not the water bill for households.

French person here :
Your cold water bill is included in the rent, and you pay for the gaz used to heat your hot water.
Also, the fact that you divide everything in weeks is killing me.
I'm a US citizen and I yelled: "Just figure out how much it is per month!" I think it's because, as he has admitted, he doesn't budget haha-so he doesn't know how!
omw part 2 is everything! this is the mindset about money I need to internalise, especially as a student. i need to live for my own enjoyment and in the present, rather than accumulating stuff/money based on what others think I should do.

I did all my travelling on virtually no money, how did I do that?,between the ages of 30 and 60 then our UK Govt had changed the law so all the ladies of my generation who had worked hardfor a lifetime on the promise of retirement and a life of ease and travel had to work till the age of 66 which totally pissed off most of them and also put great distress on some. Then I rejoined the workforce and now have reached that new state pension age and there is covid so there's no travel. Which proves I was right.

i'm moving to spain in january so it was super helpful to hear about having bank accounts in both countries! and i 100% feel like money isn't real and is just a game, like you're literally EARNING POINTS??? issa video game fr

i don't know how I'd feel about "money not being real" >> but when the argument comes out of damon's mouth, for some reason, it sounds like points are *being made*
this made me think a lot about my own relationship to money. sometimes idc how much money i spend bc i feel like im investing in myself and i like the things i buy. sometimes im buying necessities and i want them to last a long time and so i dont mind paying more for "luxary". but the way i was conditioned to think about money i feel like is in such a negative way and i'll hear that little voice in my head saying "hmm idk is it worth it? it's kinda pricey" but like honestly is money even real?? america is in trillion dollar debt like how??? so yeah i mean i feel like it's important to be smart with your money (save it, make sure you pay off the important stuff) but also spend it in a way that makes you happy and is necessary for you

I love your videos and your vision of the world and life. I laugh so hard whenever I watch them. You make my days!
Water bill is usually included in the "charges" when you pay rent "les charges" are included (water, maintenance of the common areas/elevator, trash removal...)
you dont pay water bills in paris bc the municipality pays for you!! water is publicly owned and free!!!
Hahaha, no. If you don't pay it it's because your landlord pays it for you, and you pay him back in what's called "charges".
He does pay water, it's just included in his rent (bc the "charges" are included except electricity) it's how it worked usually for apartment in france at least
Yeah the usual in Europe everywhere where lived so far the water is included in the utilities you only have to pay electricity and WiFi separate.
Wooot are you serious?
My edf charges say otherwise
I feel like I gain so much wisdom from every thing you say, please continue making many more videos on your opinions of life and other topics! I feel you are so knowledgable.

americans "omg that's so cheap"
europeans who live (alone) outside the major cities: ...
right?? i literally never spend more than 40ÂŁ a week (but iâm also a student)
I live in Madrid and Damon spends more in a week than I do a month. The groceries were really shocking to me
Iâm American in NYC and cost of living sounds so cheap in the video. Like damn, We might spend $150-$300 on groceries that could last 2 weeks maybe.
I rarely go to restaurants, I have a coffee maker at home etc.
damon you are everything ! Watching your videos lift me up from my depression !
I personally spend around ~500 a month excluding rent.
i mean for groceries you can make a big trip once a week a little further away, that what i was doing when i was living there
kanekiji i mean you can, but it gets heavy and Iâm weak as fuck haha.
NeimaDParis wait really?? Iâve got to look this up, iâm downloading the app right now!! Thanks for sharing that I appreciate it so much!

I really appreciate this kind of content. In a world driven by greed and excess its a reminder of what is important xx
you're such great influence, damon! thank u for putting these out xx
every time he mentions shut up and go i'm like tell us the drama already đ
In reference to what you were talking about at the end of the video, the sad thing is some people work very hard and are still in poverty. Unfortunately, capitalism doesnât allow everyone who works hard to flourish, even though many people believe that to be true. I totally agree with your philosophy on money, though. Iâve found that even as I start to make more money, my happiness level is about the same and the amount of problems I have is more or less the same.
I love these types of videos, even though it's hard to take every financial aspect into account. Even though we'd have different lifestyle and make financial choices, it's good to have a reference point from someone our age. Yay
tbh i am subscribed to this channel because you have a fly vibe and dope style, love you
"If you want to ruin my day ask me about taxes and numbers" SAME.
