Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

In every city, there are a bunch of entrepreneurs starting businesses. The common thread is almost always: 0 knowledge about technology.
Many can be salesman and boots-on-the-ground people, without realizing that their operations can be automated.
So by literally just showing up at your local entrepreneurship development center where they give courses to starting entrepreneurs, you could easily be anyone's CTO by just:
- showing up;
- listening to everyone's beginning business;
- showing them casual interest and asking further questions; and
- offering to participate setting their tech up.
Small businesses I met, in which I could/should probably have given a helpful hand:
- elderly people moving company;
- a zero-waste grocery store in a new yuppie part of the region;
- construction guy starting up (was and continue to be booming).
This is so smart!
As a professional tutor (LSAT) I would highly recommend charging AT LEAST $50/hr. If an agency is paying you less than that, DON'T work for them. Some agencies take up to 80% of what clients pay. Finding clients on your own is difficult, but not THAT difficult, and considering you get to keep the entire fee, it's well worth your time to seek out your own clients. Also, remember that people want to pay for quality service. Between a $15/hr tutor and a $75/hr tutor, 9 times out of 10, they'll go with the $75.
Freelancing is awesome 🎊 but I think a 4/5 rating for ease of starting is way too optimistic. It takes a long time to build a portfolio & find clients, and even on sites like upwork you need to build a reputation & do work almost for free until you gain good ratings. It's "easy" to get started, but definitely not easy to actually make money 😅 Keep in mind you will work very hard with little income at the beginning (unless you already have great skills, projects, or existing connections to leverege)

I've done courses before (and hope to do more). If a course has a lot of value, you can charge a lot and focus on a handful of students at a time. I agree with the strategy you recommend!

Totally in line with your final remarks, formerly Nuclear Engineer transitioned into DS with Masters degree and aced my first full time DS after 2 internships (1.5 years ago). Now transiting the path of content creation (baby steps), still wondering whether I'll go into the course route as well or just invest in taking videos from Informational/Tutorial to a more creative / performance once my audience is built

I don't particularly like my industry, and want to make the switch. I know there's the self taught, bootcamp, or degree route. I was just curious what your opinion and recommendation would be? A combination of IoT and chemical engineering would make for a great understanding of certain industries, regarding the management of field devices, no?
@@themore-you-know I have not. The problem I have is mostly that I hate working out in the field. I'm in Canada, and most of the chemical engineering roles are either up north In the oil patch, or out east where cost of living is exuberantly high. I want to leave chemical all together eventually. My motivators are: better work environment, better pay, remote work opportunities.
@@abdullahabid218, yeah, work up north can be harsh I can imagine.
How about water treatment? Almost every water treatment plant and industrial plant with process waters have numerous field devices, both inside the plants and in their pipe networks. If you want to get a feel for the field, you can visit your nearest big city water treatment plant and ask for a tour, they might give you one. (I live in Quebec, so non-Quebecer plants might be different as we take most of our water from rivers, whereas many other cities outside of Quebec might process water using much smaller distributed systems of wells).
Rockwell Automation, etc. all have fields dedicated to the automation of chemical processes, no?
How about Transport? I hear read somewhere that railways are looking for embedded systems engineers.
Sorry for repeating the whole IoT thing numerous times, haha. I'll shut up now.
@@themore-you-know I currently work as an ammonia plant process engineer (in training). Cast majority of my work is carrying out MOC's and small project implementation for turnarounds regarding catalyst replacement. I have almost no exposure to automation or programming here. I'm hesitant to just up and leave as it took me forever to land this role, even with extensive coop experience. I'll look into what you've said, but more and more recently I've seen fellow grads from my year go from Chem e jobs to entirely software development.

While I like your videos, this vedios is full of BS when it comes to the freelance part. You make it sound easy like you have done everything.For beginners, freelancing is one of the toughest. It is very hard to find your first client. Almost everything "earning money with coding" is very hard and, in some cases , virtually, impossible . So, please don't mislead people with your naive assumptions
