  • 5th March 1966: First of four season-defining games involving Manchester United that were broadcast by the BBC over the next few weeks. Following these games history will show that Matt Busby's team have peaked too early and will now have to wait another two years to win the European Cup. In this first game United face promotion chasing Wolves at Molineux and will have to dig deep in a classic high scoring 5th Round FA Cup tie. A nice side bar is Wolves new upcoming star Peter Knowles attempting to become the new Georgie Best with the great man playing.

Thought I'd seen them all but never seen that Best goal before. What a magnificent match, fantastic stuff from both teams.

Law, Greaves, Muller and Hurst these guys have the instinct to be at the right place and score.

Trust the 60s to come up with the goods. Just before heavy metal and hooliganism spoiled everything beautifull.I love these old soccer matches.Obviously the standard is higher now.But this era will shine forever with its special magic, which I am old enough and lucky enough to have expierenced in real time 3d...

On the pitches they had to play on I think there technique and skill was up there with today’s players, how would the current crop cope with a mud bath or a sand pit……

Wolves threw that one away; terrible blunder from Knowles, he should have booted it the opposite way.
