Adapting Manga to Anime is a difficult task. You're dealing with two completely different entertainment mediums. One print, and one animated. As such, there are a lot of different ways it can be approached... not all of them are good. Today we're talking about how to adapt manga to anime in a way that is faithful to the original work, entertaining and meaningful. I may have gotten side tracked talking about the many ways that One Piece does every possible thing wrong. Well really, how Toei Animation does everything wrong. As opposed to Land of the Lustrous and Studio Orange, who produced and excellent adaptation of a phenomenal manga.

My biggest gripe with the One Piece animation is turning one hit KOs into beam struggles with fists.
In the Manga, Luffy's Grizzly Magnum and King Gong Gun one shotted Ceasar and Doffy.
In the Anime, Luffy has to do a beam struggle where he pushes his fist against his enemy.
My problem with this, is it completely changes the sense of how strong that attack was.

those are exactly my thoughts, by extending and slowing the pace of the clashes the anime completely changes the narrative, that is objectively a bad adaptation
I finally caught up with the manga of one piece around the beginning of Wano and was super excited to see the first encounter with Kaido to be animated and was honestly genuinely frustrated when i saw they turned what was basically an intense 3 panel moment into some bizarre episode long fight scene. It completely changes the context of the story and the power each of the characters display.

It kills me that they don't do cover stories in between arcs it can give the anime a break while the manga continues to give more space and they canon
there aren't that many creative writers in toei to do the cover stories

@jjasuka This is actually one of the biggest false myths that spread and the truth has just never stuck. People have looked up the ratings of the 5 cover story episodes from East Blue and they have the same viewership as all the other episodes of the time. There is no reason for them to stop doing cover stories other than someone at Toei thought it would be weird to focus on Jango and Hachi and just never went back once they skipped those.

@@1suuuperfrankystan812 I also don't even think it's too late, but Toei probably just doesn't care to see it this way. Just add a 3-5 minute segment to the end of every episode, basically giving it the run time of the recaps, call it "Side Story Theater" or something. Start with the more recent ones since that'll be more interesting to current viewers, but then you can always still do "How Hachi met Camie" and stuff later. But they'll never do it.

One Piece deserves better
It needs to be said louder and more often. This isn't an elitist "my opinion is always right and you have to enjoy media my way" sort of situation. It's more like, you're already dreading how long One Piece takes to get through. Why would you consume it in a way that takes several times longer and is even *slightly* less good? The easy version is the good version, just do yourself a favor!
Wano is so much better in the anime though. Especially for a weekly anime, not a seasonal

I really wished the OP anime used it's filler by using the cover stories to give the studios time to slow down and improve the quality. Hell, the time skip would have been a good opportunity to transition the One Piece anime into a seasonal series with cover stories to fill in the gaps and help offer viewers something to enjoy between seasons/arcs.

@@nobodyimportant4778 I mean, kind of? Avatar: The Last Airbender was just a cartoon. There wasn't a source comic series that the show was based on. ATLA would have scenes and episodes dedicated to other characters to flash them out. One Piece has a ton of cover stories following other characters who have their own adventures outside of the Straw Hat Crew. Problem is, the anime hardly uses this material for filler episodes. Half of the Foxy Pirates stuff is not canon and could have been filled with Ms Golden Week's adventure where she and a couple other agents help rescue several of the other Baroque Works agents from the Navy (which is canon and explains how Mr. 1, 3, Bon Clay, and Crocodile get into Impel Down).
It boggles my mind how Toei just decided not to adapt any of the cover stories after the first two. You would think that they did that because of poor ratings and people on the internet will tell you it's because of that reason but no, if you actually look at the ratings for the Buggy and Koby episodes the drop is not at all that significant. So why do they refuse to do it after that? I'll never know.
In the early anime they did adapt the cover stories, for example Cobymeppo. I believe viewer-numbers dropped during those cover stories, which is why they went to use filler arcs instead. Such a shame
@@forte_dx1813 I'd guess it was the audience not understanding the importance of the side stories and the impact it has later. A good example of this is Misters 1, 2, and 3, Crocodile, and Buggy being in Impel Down. It's not really shown how they ended up there in the anime because their stories were continued in the cover pages. Coby and Helmeppo's training arc seemed like a dead end at the time, however it paid off at the end of Water 7/Ennis Lobby with their glow up.
If it's viewership numbers that they were concerned about, that'd suck because later filler arcs don't really work for the story except for G-8.

I fully believe that the reason the One Piece anime - or more accurately Toei is not fixing these issues is because it is One Piece. It is one of the most beloved pieces of fiction with die hard fans of all ages. The anime will ALWAYS have millions of people watching it. Why fix the problem when they’ll have watchers? And that sucks. Because both Oda and his series deserves better than that. Amazing video! Can’t wait to see what is next.
Yeah I'm with you. They didn't fix the animation until they started losing viewership. They won't go to a seasonal model until people stop watching. So that's not gonna happen

@@CaptainMack Sad but true! And it's not like it can't work, like you mentioend Demon Slayer, it goes through seasons and movies and doesn't try to put any filler in between. Thanks to this approach (seasonal + no fillers + amazing animation and adaptation), the anime is absolutely loved worldwide regardless of the quality of source material. It can be done, just Toei doesn't wanna change the status quo at this point.

For instance DB is one of the biggest medias ever created in general they have a super popular sequel series that’s still ongoing but after TOP they haven’t even THOUGHT about it bringing the series back. My point is I don’t think they’ll actually continue if they ever tried to switch up the schedule a lot of those animators making the show would be dispersed throughout the company to work on other anime’s

Edit: I know Wit have a very good reputation (loved first three AoT season and Spy x Family) and I don't underestimate their abilities, but if they're going to remake the anime from the beginning to the end (if it'll EVER gonna end) I hope the quality stay consistent. Of course, it might be shorter then Toei's since:
A: it's seasonal
B: There won't be fillers (hopefully).
C: They can adapt multiple chapters instead of what Toei did where they adapted one chapter and dragged it on. They have many MANY chapters and materials available and a long road ahead and they don't have to worry on catching up with the manga.

Honestly my concern is that WIT will drop the project, like they have done to so many others (rightfully so), and then its gonna get dumped on a studio like mappa and will go back to looking like crap.

Never in my life have I been so offended by something I 100% agree with. Like to this day I still haven't continued watching the anime despite knowing that the anime got better in Wano. Dressrosa just did something to me man.

Doflamingo continues to be my favorite antagonist to this day and I die a little inside when I remember how the fight was handled in the anime. Everyone was out of model in every shot, the impact of every hit was just gone bc it lingered for like 4 whole seconds, not to mention the goddamn Birdcage closing in and the same fucking shot of the residents running away at the start of every episode.
There is this myth going around that the anime has drastically improved in Wano. Um it depends on the episode, Zoro vs King for example was incredible. The gear 5 transformation despite how polished it looks has the same issues we see in Dressrossa. When I watched that episode, it reminded me why I read the manga. I stopped watching the anime weekly after the middle of whole cake.

The thing that pisses me off most about the anime, is that there are spans of episodes where it's clear that the adaptation could be INCREDIBLE. Scenes like Luffy vs Katakuri and Zoro vs King are AMAZING and beautifully animated and paced. If the rest of the anime was on that level of quality, I feel like it could've been considered the greatest adaptation of all time. Also, imo Romance Dawn through Alabasta is GREAT, but Jaya onwards is when the animation and pacing goes downhill.

The anime has ALWAYS done this padding shit, it was just less obvious in the East Blue, but it's there. The anime still didn't feel like it did the manga justice.
Newer fan here, I absolutely adored romance dawn through to skypeia (I've just passed the time skip now) would you recommend switching to the manga? The anime's pacing is fucking killing me

As a lover of manga and anime, I love it when the panels and the adaptation of those panels make me feel like I'm witnessing something absolutely amazing. Smooth and cohesive scenes that aren't cluttered and hide the action behind onomatopoeia and dialogue bubbles and adaptation scenes that aren't dragged out.
I love beautiful visuals and amazing storytelling that leaves you speechless. Kentaro Miura and Junji Ito are easy examples of that.

Polygon Studio is another that has been doing great things with 3D anime, particularly their adaptations of Tsutomu Nihei's works. The Knights of Sidonia movie looks so beautiful.

Bruh I swear there aren't as many VA's doing it like Luffy's VA! I don't think I've ever heard anyone give a character so much personality through voice alone! Like she makes Luffy sound like he's too lazy to talk right now but he'll get this sentence out cuz who he's talking to matter to him, HOW do you even capture a character like that!?!?!?! At the very least I'm so happy that this franchise has kept these amazingly talented artists with work because they deserve to shine.

I don't know how it is now, but music and especially voice acting were so good, that I don't regret watching it up to Zou arc. I can not overstate how much voice acting elevates some of the emotional scenes

The comical scenes too. all the scenes of the crew just interacting are so similar to watching an actual friend group banter because of how good the voices are
most emotional moments hit way more in the anime of OP than in the manga imo (just because of voice acting and music) . - prob the best thing about the op anime.

Scamboli’s vid on Land of the Lustrous got me into checking out the anime. It’s truly an incredible use of CGI animation that shows what it can really be when used to its fullest potential.
Beastars is another INCREDIBLY well done adaptation. Some of the scenes are amplified tenfold which is exactly what the medium is meant to do, and really shows how much the studio appreciates the source material.
I love the Beastars anime!! Was going to bring it up as an immaculate adaptation if no one else did :3
Agreed! Beastars is fantastic (both the manga and the anime). Studio Orange are doing a great job with the adaptation. It's clear that an immense amount of effort and careful consideration went into virtually every aspect.

The title was changed *After* the announcement came.
The current anime isn't a poor adaptation, its that One Piece is an incredibly flawed manga in general especially in the 2nd half where a lot of the charm has burnt out and the main characters are way too stuck on repeat and foregone conclusions.
@@9751matt I won’t argue OP’s story quality, but that being said I otherwise disagree, you can have a great adaptation for a mediocre story that improves on the original, like DS for example, or a terrible adaptation for an amazing story like Berserk (2016) that ruins the story. Everything he critiqued in the video could (potentially) be remedied by a new adaptation and heighten the story.

It's one of my favourite pieces of media of all time, and I have been reading it since it started, back in 2012. It is a literal gem, and I always adore seeing more people talk about it.

I am actually terrified at how much of these opinions match my own. I also got caught up during dressrosa, reading the manga I think around the start of it. It really fell off during them remembering the recaps getting as high as 9 minutes. And agreed that one well animated scene does not make the rest worth it. one scene of great animation for the gear 4th reveal does not forgive everything else besides it being thrown to the wayside.
houseki no kuni is truly a masterpiece, a masterpiece whose ending i really hated but also loved and i got something no other anime could give me: “depressed satisfaction”

I would argue that many moments in the anime are worse than simply being a lesser copy. When animation gets looped or drawn out in scenes that weren't meant to get drawn out, it can feel borderline sociopathic. Friendly interactions get this weird malice to them. The joke becomes uncomfortable. The manga is built upon emotional intelligence, but the anime feels like... It feels like it was written by someone who couldn't even tell you human emotion exists, they just know that we do weird things with our faces and voices when good or bad things happen.
I was initially like "Damn, Mack wants to be a contrarian I guess" then realized the title said ANIME and as a manga reader I GOT EXCITED

Another anime that really makes use of the strengths of the medium is Bocchi The Rock. The anime elevates the humour of the manga in a way only animation could, the animators not only knew the strengths of the medium but also where and how to use it to enhance an existing work. If you haven't watched it I recommend doing so, and then going back and reading the manga at least a little to compare and contrast the humour.

Two adaptations that also do everything right are Mob Psycho 100 and Love is War, two of my favorite anime period. They take what works about their manga and expand on the visuals in such a dynamic way that isn't possible in manga. They don't adapt every chapter, but they adapt what's most essential to the overall story while keeping the pacing consistent in order to adapt the material chosen phenomenally.
The art style changes, excellent paneling and occasional detailed close up that makes both the drama and comedy of the Love is War manga gets turned into lovingly boarded and animated scenes that have attention to lighting and visual style to emphase the gag or emotional beat. The character designs of Mob clean up the messy character art of the manga into a style that perfectly distils the appeal into consistent yet expressive characters that look amazing in both comedy and dramatic scenes. I love these adaptations even more than most because they perfectly capture the many tones shown in the source material with the medium of animation.
If One Piece did that (or got the DBKai treatment) I would watch it in a heartbeat.

It just isn’t possible for One Piece. It’s too large a body of work. This kind of often underwhelming weekly system is realistically the only way that getting One piece animated is possible.
If they had put more effort into production, they would have lagged behind the manga. If they lagged behind the manga, they would have taken a few decades to catch up to the manga once it finished.

I disagree about the Vinland adaption but understand. There were anime original scenes (like Leif talking to Thorfinn in jail), and they restructured the end of S2 with the handshake coming after the Canute talk. Both choices enhanced the story in my opinion.
Agree. It is virtually impossible to adapt the visual style of Vinland Saga faithfully in the same way that it is impossible to adapt Berserk, but imo the vinland saga adaptation captured the heart of what the manga is about and they even tried to add as much detail as possible
It might just be my preference with manga over anime in general, but when I read Vinland Saga, I feel like I'm "fully experiencing a story," as opposed to the anime, where I felt a lot more of a disconnect and like I was just "watching a show." The contents of the story were incredible to experience simply because the plot and story itself is amazing, but I still found myself leaning more to the manga than anime, again most likely because that's my preferred medium.
@@azquidif6319 I like manga for the exact opposite reason than most I think. I like it because I can speed through the story at my own pace, anime forces me to stop and smell the roses I guess? Idk. But interesting to see how different it is for everyone.
@@Ez.bake_evan oh for sure, self pacing is a strength that really moves manga to my preferred form of entertainment. It's also super nice for absorbing information, I've seen so many people being confused or mixing things up with JJK'S anime adaptation, but in the manga I can take my time to absorb the information without pausing the episode.
The only thing I can say is that it feels like a lot of nuance is lost in the anime.
The only anime original change I 100% agree with is the decision to move the promise to the end. As I think Einar lashing out at Canute without any other future in mind works slightly better. But then we miss all the cool moments of the two calling eachother “brother” too tho

And THANK YOU for talking about the sound effects. *Nobody* seems to have a problem with them, but it annoys me so much because everything either sounds like it's from 20 years ago, or every character has the same sounds effects meaning none of them feel distinct at all

If you want an example of needed changes in anime, I would say Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a brilliant place to look. In Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the manga leaves out a lot of important and necessary context to understand the importance of a lot of these characters and then only brings them up again in the Shibuya Arc 10 volumes later. In the anime though, it adds context with the knowledge of the Shibuya Arc and gives it more flavor. Miguel is a very prominent character in Yuta's growth because after Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Miguel and Yuta begin training on an island together. In the manga, it never explains who Miguel is, why he's important, how he knows Yuta, and how he was affiliated with Geto except for 3 panels showing him next to Geto. In the anime though, it spends more time going through Geto and his relationship with his group so we can understand their values and who they are as people. In fact they added 3 whole new fight scenes exclusively for this reason, and Miguel is one of them. In Miguel's (short-lived) fight with Gojo it's basically stated through his actions, quips, and mannerisms that he's only doing this because he agrees with Geto and nothing more.
Yes, I would say that JJK, in general, is a great adaptation, especially in s2. You can feel the love everyone has for the source material, even if it's flawed. It's the added details that make it great. Shame Mappa treats their artists like dirt.
Newer shounens like Jjk & demon slayer is the reason why I don’t do shounens anymore. It’s all the same shit. Can’t even read shounens mangas anymore without the backing of a good story. Don’t care how much they fancy it up in the anime. It’s still shit.

i will tell people this until the day i die but JJK is a SHONEN ANIME DONE RIGHT. In JJK death actually matters, you learn character's opinions and reasonings, the "Strongest Sorcerer" is constantly outsmarted and defeated despite having a lot of moments where it is VISUALLY established that he is immensely powerful and intelligent. Gojo is a 3-Dimensional character that still struggles and has reasons to feel the ways he does. When he asks Geto why he shouldn't just kill the sea of people in front of him it's to establish that he doesn't feel anything when people die and to establish that he doesn't see the point in doing the right thing if the wrong thing has no consequences to him. This is brought up later on when Geto leaves Jujutsu High because their roles have reversed; Geto now sees no reason to help people because the consequences of helping people are either death or overbearing depression and the consequences of being bad is the potential that you might be overpowered, which isn't likely since the one person strong than him is his best friend. Gojo now realized that Jujutsu Sorcery was designed specifically to save the lives of those without it, he knows that there would be no consequences for doing the wrong thing but he doesn't believe that other people should suffer the consequences of his actions. The amount of thematic elements and callbacks to other scenes and internal turmoil that is portrayed accurately in this series is enough to talk about it for hours and the show isn't even on episode 50 yet.@@ssaribay

For the Remake, besides the modern and improved Wit Studio animation, no filler, and improved sound design. The pacing will be the #1 most important update for this new anime. Right NOW, as of December 17, 2023, we are deep into the Egghead Island Arc in the Manga with 1,102 Chapters total. If this new anime remake, The One Piece fully adapts the manga faithfully and does it at the standard 2-3 Chapters per episode that most other anime typically do. Then we can easily estimate how many episodes it would take to reach the current manga of Egghead. If 2 chapters are adapted per episode it would be 1102/2 = 551 episodes. If it adapts 3 chapters per episode it would be 1102/3 = 367 episodes. And on average if it adapts 2.5 chapters per episode (typical 2-3 chapters), 1102/ 2.5 = 440 episodes. This all means that from episode 1 in the East Blue saga all the way through to current Egghead arc it would take either 367 episodes, 440 episodes or at the very most 551 episodes. For further context episode 367 in the current original anime was at the Thriller Bark arc, episode 440 is at the Impel Down arc, and episode 551 is at the Fishman Island arc. This means that all of the sagas/ arcs: Romance Dawn, Orange Town, Syrup Village, Baratie, Arlong Park, Logue Town, Reverse Mountain, Whisky Peak, Little Garden, Drum Island, Alabasta, Jaya, Skypiea, Long Ring Long Land, Water 7, Enies Lobby, Post Enies Lobby, Thriller Bark, Sabaody Archipelago, Amazon Lily, Straw Hats Separation, Impel Down, Marineford, Post War, Return to Sabaody, Fishman Island, Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, Zou, Whole Cake Island, Reverie, Wano Country, and Egghead Island will ALL be covered and done in UNDER 551 episodes. That is incredible. Just wanted to really bring home how amazing this series could potentially be.

I can tell the animators for Vinland Saga tried to keep the original greatness of the art as closely as possible because in close up shots the characters faces or whatever the camera is pointing at the detail becomes much higher

As much as I love One Piece, I’d have to agree. Toei brings so many problems into it that it’s sad to watch it unfold. I think one saving grace in my opinion would be the voice actors. They really bring the characters to life and make them feel real. When I think of One Piece I always think of Mayumi Tanaka. (Not the dub omg-) She IS Luffy to me. They are really gem in the chaos Toei has created.
