  • In this video, I show how I replaced a serpentine accessory drive belt on a Kia Rio 1.6L GDI.
    I also show how I tested the accuracy of my Krikit II tension gauge with two pulleys and a belt attached to a static load of 185 pounds.
    Multiple measurement readings were done on a short 7 inch span and other ones on a 12 inch span.
    The accuracy was quite precise for the 12 inch span but was not accurate for the 7 inch span.
    Since the values were constant with the 7 inch span, I only compensated by adding a specific percentage to the average readings.

    Great informative video,fifteen minutes later done and dusted. Old belt was in very good condition after 60,000 miles,could have done the same again.

    Excellent tutorial. The trick of sliding the belt of the pump was especially useful, and disconnecting the battery is also a good idea. In my kia picanto removing the wheel was unnecessary . Like your accent to. Thanks form Israel .❤

      Only the 1.6L version is sold in Canada. You should contact your local Kia dealership for specific details.

    Thank you for the video,it was really helpful, but one question, what’s the details for the type of belt you purchased if I want purchase the same one without any samples ? Like what’s the belt number?

    • @mtlcarguy
      @mtlcarguy  Před 2 lety

      When a part is easy to get, I do not give any specific product name or part number in my videos.
      People can select and buy a product with the help of an auto parts counter person.
      Usually, I buy parts made by national brands because they have up to date technologies and they have to protect their brand reputation with good products.

    What would happen if I removed the idler pulley? what is your function? Why does the belt tighten with the alternator?

    • @mtlcarguy
      @mtlcarguy  Před 9 měsíci +1

      1: What would happen if I removed the idler pulley? The drive belt would vibrate, be noisy and it would not last long enough.
      2: What is your function? ... You mean the function of the idler pulley ?? It is used to stabilize the the drive belt when it is in motion.
      3: Why does the belt tighten with the alternator? It is a simple system and KIA wants to save space and money instead of using a belt tensioner assembly.

    Dernière question, est-ce que la poulie de droite de votre banc d'essai de validation de 7''C.C. pouvait pivoter ou elle était fixe?

    • @mtlcarguy
      @mtlcarguy  Před rokem

      Oui elle pouvait pivoter et il n'y avait pratiquement aucune restriction de rotation sur chacune des 2 poulies.
      Chaque arbre de roulement dans les poulies avait du jeu pour tourner librement et avait été graissé.
      Les 2 écrous qui sont visibles ont été mis en place par mesure de sécurité et ils n’étaient pas serrés pour nuire à la rotation pour ainsi obtenir une tension égale entre la section verticale de droite et la section horizontale de la courroie.

    I have a 2012 kia Rio. I cannot get the belt over the water pump pulley. I have the alternator pushed back as far as it will go. Did you use a authetic kia part?

    • @mtlcarguy
      @mtlcarguy  Před rokem

      No, it was a Gates Micro-V Serpentine Belt K060494 and it was matching the original one.

    • @avcarballo
      @avcarballo Před 2 měsíci

      @@mtlcarguy Yeah, certain companies may make the belt just a bit smaller than others. I would recommend getting the original version and obtaining a back up in case. I had replaced my belt just cause and I order a belt that was too tight and my god. It made the loudest squeak in history at idle and acceleration. I reverted back to my original and the noise was gone. I do have to fix the idle pulley after having it strain too tight over a day's worth of drive.

    Bonjour, qu'est-ce qui vous a motivé à réaliser une calibration de votre jauge de tension sur un centre-en-centre de 7''? Est-ce que cette jauge est limitée à une distance ''X" de centre-en-centre entre les poulies selon son fabricant? Merci et bonne journée

    • @mtlcarguy
      @mtlcarguy  Před rokem +1

      De 1975 à environ 1995 j'avais l'habitude de tourner les courroies environ 90 degrés avec mes doigts pour ajuster la tension, donc j'ai une certaine expérience.
      Avec les serpentines c’est plus difficile de vérifier avec les doigts quand la longueur entre 2 poulies est courte.
      Quand ma vieille jauge est disparue, j’ai décidé d’essayer ce nouveau modèle mais je n’avais pas l’impression que la tension était bonne quand je l’ai vérifié avec mes doigts.
      À ce moment, comme je n’avais pas trouvé une documentation du fabricant qui me convenait, j’ai décidé de faire mes propres tests et de les montrer dans ma présentation.

    • @davidyoung8521
      @davidyoung8521 Před rokem +1

      That 90 degree technique is an old mechanic trick.

    Félicitations pour votre vidéo. Que veut dire le sigle AOD?

    • @mtlcarguy
      @mtlcarguy  Před rokem

      En fait, OAD veut dire ''Overrunning Alternator Decoupler. Pour le modèle Kia Rio, ce type de poulie pour alternateur est seulement disponible avec certaines options.

    This is the worst video I have seen to change a serpentine belt on a kia rio. Literally the only video ive seen where the tire and plastic shield are removed. It's like you are creating more work on purpose to increase labour costs for the customer (or waste your own time). Also don't understand the testing at the end, you literally just keep torquing the belt until it doesn't squeal. The only thing this vid accomplished was overcomplicating a simple job, unbelievable. I try my best to avoid mechanics like you like the plague.
