  • Situated on the main roads of Can Tho City, this house serves as the residence for a three-generation family, following the cherished tradition of "tam đại đồng đường" - three generations living together. With a rich history spanning over 300 years, starting from the migration of Vietnamese people to the colonization by the French and the subsequent urban development, this place encapsulates the cultural essence of the region. The architectural design of this dwelling has transformed into a precious heritage, offering insights into the roots and characteristics of the Southwest people.
The rapid development of today's urban areas has caused subsequent generations to gradually forget their cultural roots. Children who are born and raised in a materialistic environment are becoming disconnected from the cultural identities that shaped their parents and grandparents. It is with these concerns in mind that the concept for Can Tho House was developed.
Situated in a southeast facing position, the house takes advantage of its expansive length of land. The interior spaces of the house are arranged in a specific order: starting with the commercial area, followed by the courtyard, then the living room, dining area, kitchen, side yard, and finally the bedrooms. The altar, study room, and additional bedrooms on the first and second floors are arranged in a way that progresses from the outer areas of the house to the inner areas.
The architecture of the Southwest region reflects the owner's lifestyle by strategically positioning each living space. The inclusion of gardens between the spaces and extending eaves serve as communal and flexible elements for socializing with neighbors. The roof structure is designed with rhyme and rhythm, resembling the floating houses of the Southwestern people. The living spaces are separated like these houses, moving along the rivers without ever feeling lonely. The static spaces gradually recede within the house, with approximate boundaries between them. This setup allows for effective cross-room ventilation and noise reduction in the bedrooms.
Our aspiration is for this house to create an environment that nourishes the children's soul and fosters a strong bond between all generations. Additionally, with this project, we aim to make a modest contribution towards the preservation of the local culture and identity.
