I know I've said this before, but I love how Hot Toys is releasing older figures using their modern techniques.
I was tempted to pick this up but I am going to hold out for the new release version. Hopefully it will be worth the the wait

I agree because. In the past this figure was not so good but now they basically remaked it. And this goes for many other figures they remake.
Now they gotta do that with their Eric Draven figure
This is the very figure that got me into the rabbit hole of high-end collectibles. I used to just enjoy looking at my friends’ collections, but when Hot Toys announced the DX08 and DX09, I thought I gotta have them on my own shelves. I remember getting the DX09 from my local comic shop then carrying the box all the way to a dinner, my first dinner date with the lovely lady I’d date for the next 6 years. She’s now my wife of 4 years, and she still supports my hobby. She bought me the Batman Returns figure many years ago for my birthday :)

I remember seeing this figure in person more than a few times during my early teens in 2012-2013 and I gotta say this still looks great even for an older piece, although I’m still curious and eager to see how different or how improved will the new 2.0 89 Batman turn out compared to this older version

Michael Keaton is the Batman of my childhood.😐 I remembered watching the Tim Burton Batman film as a kid and I loved it, and it's the film that made me love Michael Keaton as an actor.🙂

I think it's interesting how each HT Keaton Batman faces are sculpted a little differently from each other, but they all still look like Keaton.

Maybe it's just me, but I LOVE the original cape, especially the way you scrunched up the ends like that and draped it over his shoulders. It looks way more screen accurate and it looks more real/in scale. The custom one, to me, looks like one of those microfiber cleaning cloths, and as a seamstress I can't get over the fact the edges are just cut straight out of the fabric and aren't hemmed off.

This figure serves to illustrate that just because a figure is getting on in years, it does not diminish the outstanding work that the artists produced at the time. The artists knocked it out of the park with this one. The likeness: facial, physique and body proportions, is so good that, even though I have ordered the newer version, I cannot say that it looks better overall, or more like Michael Keaton. Certainly, paint apps and realism in the eyes has improved over the years, but this DX09's facial likeness - on all 3 faceplates - and expressions are near perfect to my eyes.

Great review as always Justin. I absolutely still love my DX09. I took him out of the detolf The other day and he still holds up as good as he looked the day I received him from sideshow collectibles. The only reason for me to get the 2.0 is to get that gargoyle statue. And more articulation for poses. The DX09 is like a statue, you just let him stand there and admire how awesome this figure is. I also have a custom cape and it makes a world of difference. Tony Meis from the sideshow freaks back in the day

I got this a couple of months ago, I am very pleased to have all of the 1989 figures now, as I’ve hade the jokers since 2013!

@@JustinsCollection thanks! Yes I agree, I’ve taken measurements off of him for my life size suit project, so I can guarantee the sculpt is accurate
The older one still looks good. The new version should be sick if looking at the older one can be used to measure their work. Like going from great to fantastic. This video was very satisfying for a number of reasons. I remember seeing this movie in the theater. This brings back what I was feeling when I watched the movie.

I have it and its 100% true what you said about the cape. Its God awful. It is however a stunning figure with a great presence on the shelf.
The cape lets down what is otherwise an epic figure!
Batman 89 is my favorite Batman. I’ve been using the user name “DX” for over 20 years now. 9 is my favorite number.

I'm a Sideshow statue collector but I saw the 1989 Batmobile in some random vid and checked Sideshows site and saw one is coming out in 2024 so I ordered it, then I had to get a Batman to go with that so I added the new one that's coming out in 2024 (Keaton Deluxe). This will be my first Hot Toys and I'm hyped.

I like this 1/6 scale figure because it resembles the 1989 Batman so much, and I like how the Bat logo for the stand is yellow because it does go with black. Nice review too!

The cape will stay in one piece and will not flake if its not kept in the box and kept in the right conditions. It needs to hang naturally. I've had three in total only one I had cracked and flaked was a boxed figure with the cape baged and sealed and left for years in the box.

I remember seeing these in my local comic shop many moons ago but I wasn’t collecting them at the time so I skipped them and by the time I was into collecting Hot Toys they were too pricey to pick up. I’m glad they’re making a 2.0 so now I can get one that’s better than the old one.

great review it's always nice to see how figures hold after years, even when cape is flaking it's not end of the world since it can be replaced for a better one and the whole body looked really well

I heard the production already had a promotional deal with Nike while making the movie and were trying to decide where to put them in the movie. And then they just chose to make Batman wear Nike's, which Keaton happened to love for their comfort

I had this but it was more of a statue than an “action figure”. Elbows wouldn’t move and as long as he was standing still you’d be fine. Cape was also terrible. Best thing about it was selling it years later for more than 2x what I paid. I did put a pre-order on the reissue last week tho!!

It's actually a very good looking cape, so we will see if the new version 89 is a better version, I've mine on PREORDER too but by the pics it looks like it had a texture? Anyways let's wait and see.

Beast Kingdom does a really cool version and you can get it and the Nicholson Joker for about the same price as this Hot Toys Batman(as someone that has a ton from this brand including the Bale Batman) but I was very impressed with the BK version. Not perfect but hard to beat for $150!

I dont own the DX09 so I pre ordered the 1989 2.0 immediately when sideshow announced the pre orders haha

They really screwed up with the chest symbols. The Returns ones should be larger and more round, and the 89 one should be slightly smaller. That’s actually one of the reason I don’t like the Returns suit… the symbol is too big.
Thankfully the 2.0 89 version it looks like they got it absolutely right.

Great review. I really really hate the location of the pers-eye system on the back of his cowl that sucks. hopefully on the 2.0 new 89 Batman figure pers-eye system is in a new location.

This figure definitely needs a 2.0! However...it still holds up even to todays standards. 89 Batman is of course the first major Batman of my childhood. But I prefer the Dark Knight Christian Bale! I've always thought that the older Batman movies were way too childish! And I personally prefer the more darker, adult content Batman movies.
