The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

That sure went fast! Cute rendition of it. I liked Gary kissing her at the end. TY for sharing this. God Bless You & stay safe.
This Diamond Ring sums it all...
He was a good singer
WOW! Lucky lady.
I appreciate this posting as it presents Gary Lewis singing live, without a playback singer, in his own often-enough-maligned voice. And even if his assignment in Vietnam was two months at the Saigon Airport, it still represents the American experience of that era.
You're right. At least he went unlike so many that packed their bags and fled to Canada. Ole cassius could have done the same thing, but he wouldn't go.
if you had been treated like Ali had been treated when he was growing up in the south, you probably wouldn't go either , tough guy.@@MrDynafxdc
It's so great to hear a clip of him singing live!
Edit: Read the second paragraph for another "Bye Bye Birdie" connection I have discovered. This is the last part of a segment which featured Gary Lewis performing a medley of his hits. After he did so, Ed Sullivan brought a girl on stage to give Gary a kiss before he joined the army, a la the famous scene in "Bye Bye Birdie" (a movie which also featured an appearance by Ed Sullivan). He sings a little bit of "One Last Kiss" to her as it was the song featured in the same scene in the movie. Gary's service in the army effectively stalled his chart career and he never regained the success he had previously. Gary Lewis and the Playboys are one of my favorite bands of the '60's, and I'm looking forward to seeing the medley of hits posted someday.
I have figured something out! The movie "Bye Bye Birdie" was released exactly 60 years ago from April 4, 2023, on April 4, 1963, so all these consecutive Birdie song videos being posted are to commentate this event. Am I right, Sofa Entertainment? :)
I like them.. The group has 9 top 15 hits on a row. He did have one top 20 hit in early '68, a remake of "Sealed With A Kiss".
@@sexymama1966 Gary had said that releasing that recording of "Sealed with a Kiss" turned out to be a mistake, as he was rusty after finishing his military duty, and didn't turn in the best vocal. He also wasn't double-tracked on the record, as he had been on all his earlier hits, and it spelled the end of his chart run. In addition, music had changed a lot while he was away.
I thought I was losing my mind but thanks for putting the pieces together
@@BuffaloBeatle You're welcome!
@@TomElvisSmith he probably didn't have the wrecking crew on later hit either
This is adorable!
I'd heard about this but never thought I'd see any clips from it! Thank you for uploading this!
Very charming.😂
Gary looks so much like his dad
Jerry Lewis' Last Will and Testament left Ø provision for his son, Gary Lewis.
Great Video , thanks for posting. Sadly for Gary Lewis, during his 2 years of military service 1967-68 pop music changed greatly and on his return to civilian life his music style hadn't changed , you can see him here on youtube on a January 1969 appearance ( fresh out of the army) on the Jerry Lewis show with the Playboys singing his 1966 hit She's just my style , the band are all wearing their matching Beatlesque 1965 suits, no acknowledgement of the change in music/ fashion. It's a shame his music didn't have the opportunity to develop post army stint.
At least he was one of those who returned and was able to rejoin civilian life...
His record company people also told him that idea specifically tho. That there was "no longer a market for him" right when he got back. He talks about that in a youtube interview somewhere. Gary did what he could. I think that it was more that he liked older pop music from the earlier 60s and late 50s (ie: Del shannon, Brian hyland) and did not jump on the psychedelic wagon like most people. He easily could have made a psychedelic album but chose not to. I also wanna throw out there that he still has some great tracks on his albums after the service. For instance his cover of Elusive Butterfly is wonderful. Can you f*cking imagine being gary and missing 1967?! It must have been so weird getting back and feeling down having literally missed the summer of love. He also mentions in an interview that the service is where he felt he "grew up". By the time he was back on the right road in 68 he released that "Main Street" song and it was very telling of how he was feeling. The hippies were entering the burnout era fast and the romantic teen dreams of the late 50s and early 60s were fading away completely. "Neon signs have lost their glitter, now they just seem so much duller, watching happiness all fade away"
@@June_Magoo Translation from the record company. With all the so-called Americans spitting on returning servicemen for being involved in that damn war it would be very hard if not impossible to market his fantastic voice. Much honor and respect to ALL returning servicemen should have gotten, but didn't .
I love this, it's awesome. ❤
That was back when a kiss really meant something.
This is incredible, never saw this send out before. Perfect!
Live vocal from Gary and it was pretty good! Not all that different from the studio vocals where his voice was usually double tracked (common for a number of teenage idols back in the 60s and 70s).
GREAT point! The haters can suck it!! Gary is god!!!!
That was the producers decision. Gary was a great musician. He played piano guitar and drums and he never needed his vocals doubled or backed. The producer was an idiot
Gary Lewis & The Playboys are great in Live concerts. Saw them live at the Ky State Fair with The Turtle's Happy Together Tour in the Old Fairgrounds Stadium behind Freedom Hall Coliseum. That Old Fairgrounds Stadium had great natural acoustics and echo chambers for the audience's and fans experiences. It was a Landmark Stadium that had to be torn down because of structural roof problems and concrete cracks due to old age. It was built in 1950 or 1955.
❤❤❤❤❤
That's one moment in time that she will cherish forever! 💋
Happy Sunday 🕊 Thank you for sharing! 💖
I like that girl..
Since March 24, 2023, I have been wondering why the channel has been uploading all the various interpretations and cast performances of the music from Bye Bye Birdie. I discovered that the 60th anniversary of the film's release occurs on April 4, 2023. Or maybe all the Bye Bye Birdie uploads are just a coincidence.
Drafted into the U.S. Army in January of '67
can't wait
❤❤❤
Looks like Carl Radle on bass guitar.
Yes it is
@@paulreed2138 I thought so.
Love it :)

Is that Carl Radle on bass?
The one and only
😆
Who’s that girl with him?
As Mr. Tom Smith responds to That 70's Girl, she probably was a previously selected public volunteer or a fan who won a previous contest for that purpose...
Cindy Palmer
Gary Lewis looks like some of the guys I see on Grindr. I bet Gary would have been on Grindr if it was around back in the day.
Man, what a stupid comment.
I bet you're the president of Grindr
You a top or bottom, toilet boy?
BYE BYE BIRDIE
Oh stop. He’s not hot.
