4K CABVIEW Dimitrovgrad - Niš (Sićevo Gorge rock cliffs and Nišava river valley -- Southeast Serbia)

  • Railway line Nis - Dimitrovgrad is one of the two southern branches of Corridor 10 through Serbia. It is the main international
transit line for freight traffic to and from Bulgaria and Turkey. The renovation and electrification of this line was planned many years ago. As the plans are not realized, this line is left to years of non-maintenance and infrastructure deterioration. Today,
mainly transit freight trains between Europe and the Middle East pass through this line. There are a few pairs of passenger trains, too. This video was recorded from one of DMU trains from Dimitrovgrad to Nis.
The ride from Dimitrovgrad (Serbian/Bulgarian border cross station) starts along the valley of the river Nisava and the railway gradually descends towards the Sicevo Gorge. Sicevo Gorge is the most scenic part, because the track runs through high cuts, rock cliffs and several tunnels. Along the line, track often crosses from one to the other side of the Nisava river across the numerous steel bridges. Among them there are bridges of closed steel construction and there are also ordinary ones.
A very unusual phenomenon for the main railway lines is very lush vegetation that has overgrown the entire track. As the last overhaul of this railway line was done several decades ago, there are many limited and slow ordered speeds. This is the reason why the passenger train runs over 3 hours to cover 97km of this line.
During the video the location and maximum permitted speed of the train are constantly displayed. Limited speeds, slow ordered speeds, all tunnels along the line, train stations and stops elevation and important events during the train ride are also also shown.
    Date of recording:
    June, 2020.

It would be hilarious if it weren't so sad for the people who live there: 30 km/h, 10 km/h on a mainline railway, stops in the middle of nowhere without any visible infrastructure, leaving one to wonder how people get on and off the train without breaking their neck, and station buildings burnt-down or in ruins. The politicians responsible for this misery should be forced to watch this video every single day. Thanks for documenting all this, Dušan.

Come on, don’t be so negative. There are reasons some countries have less money than others and it’s not only corruption. Serbia had a war going on not so many years ago. I’d prefer a slow train anytime over none. Maybe you can live there with little cost so you can afford to take a little more time to just enjoy life.
Most corruption money comes from oil, coal, nuclear and gas industry plus military. Trains never had a lobby.

Consider Denver to Sterling CO, a two hour trip by auto on I-76 vs twelve hours by train, even then we might not make it. Single track, frequent slow orders, stops in sidings for opposing traffic, higher priority traffic, plus the most I could do was sixty mph at run eight. Eighty thousand ton coal trains with ninety to one hundred five cars.

I travelled on this line 3 times with the old Istanbul Express between 1989 and 1990. That was before Yugoslav war and Serbia-Kosovo war; anyway trains were riding at this speed, even on the main line south of Belgrade, where every train from Skopje, Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey had to travel to reach Belgrade. Trains were riding very very slow, tracks were in a miserable situation. And war had yet to come.

Excelent video, especially the part of Sicevo Gorge. But, the condition of the line is awful - it`s not normal in XXI century to have speed limits like 50, 30, and even 10 km/h(!) on a main line, which connects Belgrade with Sofia and Istanbul. I hope that you can rebuild this line soon, as it needs that urgently. And also put the electrification on. Greetings from Bulgaria, mate, like your videos, keep up the good work! ;)

Railways are probably the worst state company of Serbia, so state of this line is normal to them. They even sold (actually just gave away for free because of political favor) and closed The Main Belgrade Station in the city center (in fuction since 1884) because of private residential project, only idiots can do such thing, and on top of that they didn't even complete construction of the new station (it is years away from being completed, although in use lol), which is also on a pretty bad location and with poor public transport connection (most of people living in Belgrade would not know to tell you how to get there if you ask them on the street, can you imagine something like that anywhere for a central station of the city?).

Hi! I'm from Germany and planned to visit Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia&Herzegovina for the first time in my life in March 2020. Then Covid came and I hoped to do my trip in March 2021. Sadly that turned out to be impossible as well. But thanks for your videos of these countries, it's a pleasure to enjoy that beautiful landscape there, making it all a bit easier to deal with. Hvala!

Eto ukratko o mom putesestviju nasom zeleznicom 😃

This line may be an international route to Turkey, but it’s very obvious that it’s not the route of the Orient Express, isn’t it?! Still, another of your high-quality films, Dusan: well done again.

Thank you. Yes, this should be the main rail link between Central Europe and Turkey, but unfortunately that is not the case precisely because of the desperate state of infrastructure and numerous border crossings, which are outside the Schengen zone.

I understand now why Turkish hauler Ekol sends its trailers by ship to Trieste then rails them to Germany. Sad to see such an important line reduced to this state.
