Jeff, one thing I've looked for and can't find is how to manage a marsh or wetlands property for deer. There is so much lowland for sale but it's hard to plant food plots in, is there a chance you could do an episode of "what to look for in a marshy lowland property for deer hunting?" Also how to properly manage that property for a better deer herd.
Wetlands between ag as a travel corridor might work for you, it’s up for sale for a reason though
Jeff keeps showing a square 35 acres, here in Ohio we have long narrow parcels, how do you make access if you have one access point from the West and 1/4 mile of 100yd property. Can you hold deer? It also has a creek through it, so alot is wet.
I have the same thought. I have 48 acres in the swamp. Its a L shaped parcel and 250 yards wide at the widest point of the legs. I want to build bedding, food and access but don't know how this will be possible.
@@chrisfleet7324 It can be done, the most important thing to keep in mind is screening and walls of cover for access. Getting sunlight into those wet areas to help dry them up can be huge so bucks can bed on high mounds in those swamps.
Could do browse plots like he talks about, i know ROD (red-osier dogwood) strives in wet soil and is a preffered form of food for deer

Great job, one question I have, and maybe you can incorporate into a video sometime, is 30% of our land is cedar swap (north central Wisconsin) so what can you do with it? You can’t make a food plot, and we don’t ever see deer beds there, and it’s difficult to use as an access point.

I got lucky and had Kevan visit me a couple of weeks ago. It was freaking AWESOME! I learned so much in that one day. Kevan was super in seeing what my little place could provide and to stitch together a truly cohesive plan. I am implementing it right now! I highly recommend getting a WHS associate to look the property over. Kevan was able to see things I had walked by for years without recognizing the potential. It was definitely worth the fee!

Living on the edge haha, Also ends up being the travel zone. When a person walks the big woods an clear-cuts they being to understand the importance of edge much more
Hey Jeff, I know my simazine is working Awsome…. Had a little left in my sprayer in March, and used on my driveway. Got 1” rain 2 days later…… The edges of my lawn are burnt up already after spring green up, lol 😂

Yea, im dirt poor and spend all my money on my first lease ive had...100 acre lease and supplies, so theres no way i could ever afford to hire anyone..im 100% bow hunting, and i am a complete freak, live and breath to bowhunt white tails ...is all i think about..im the guy with a target at end of my hallway...if i stand just right i have 20 yards i shoot across my living room at night..paper tuning rack by sofa..i love shooting perfect holes as much as i do shooting x's....3rd year on this property coming up.. 1st year its completely raw land ...but very diverse with a creek system through it, with very high doe count...to many.. just hunted where i could get to via creekbed and watched deer, and how they moved through the property..shot does...managed to put a nice 4 year old 8 on the ground..its a very wierd shape with poor poor access for anything other than east or north winds, but its the woods behind my home...wich im loving..i have neighboring foodplots on the property lines on 2 sides...wich blocks me accessing along tbose border due to deer bedding on me 50 to 75 yards from neighbors plots and im trying to be a good neighbor and fullfilling my dreams without messing up my neighbors setup hes hunted his whole life...i was really unsure about what to do with it.....until i found your channel...so 2nd year, last season, i got some food in place but clearing it all with a limb saw i carry in my bow vest, all by hand and by myself, so plots were small, 1/8 th acres... i used your cereal rye no til tactics...and for most part the rye managed to almost keep up with browse pressure, by end of our season, feb 10th, they had it ate to dirt...with a late january rut it means i have to go from oct 15th to jan18ish til rut gets going, thats a long time to hunt AND keep everthing fresh and undisturbed...i opted to not shoot a buck 2nd year, had 1 undersized 4 year old that lived on me that i knew of, of course he got shot by neighbor chasing a doe onto his piece.. saw a couple of nice traveling bucks in rut out of range but i think i had every single 3 year old i had pics of within bow range at least once, some of them several times due to bullet proof access and exit...they just kept coming in...on natural feeding pattern not just during rut, following your principles, access, depth of coverage, learning about the bedding hierarchy...lol...and i thought i knew alot til i started watching you...so im surrounded on all sides by hunters tight on my lines, 2 sides the guys will not shoot anything thats not mature...but other 2 sides shoot alot, guys to my north killed every single 3 year old i had pics of, 1 just minutes after i let him walk, he walked straight to neighbors plot checking for does and got shot, i just climbed down and went home disgru tled...but what happened next was the magic and im assuming its due to keeping my food spook free, bullet proof access, and keeping my smell out of their safe places...as the neighbor to my north killed my 3 year olds, new 3 year olds moved into their slots from my south neighbor, the year before ,all our mature deer fell...about 8 or 9 four year olds or older fell my first year here,,,on my 100, and surrounding me is bout 4 properties of 100 acres...everyone killed a mature buck, so i knew pickings was gonna be slim last season..went into it hoping something mature would shift in..but not high hopes...all neighbors were the same so anything mature would have to shift a long way to get to me..so a week after season i put out some bait piles with cams, and was amazed at the number of 3 year olds that survived and moved onto me, i killed the rye as greenup came, im not feeding them in summer anymore and hoping to let some doe move onto neighbors that do run plots in summer..cuz i really dont have anywhere im comfortable shooting does now...not sure how im gonna deal with that...prob just pull some to cornfeeder as far away from my bucks as i can... this season, plots are all bigger..with bow hunt setup kill plots all along my west edge of property for east winds..and southern edge for north winds, still no access for west winds...to risky to spook deer...but i should have several really nice 4 year olds that im expecting to shift onto me when make the fall shift, one is staying put now even with me working on land...expecting my funnest year ever...mostly due to you and others putting your knowledge out there to help us...mostly yours, first time i listened to you it was evident you really know whitetails.long story i know, your plan start to finish....has me in position to expect to arrow my biggest buck this year...and i just wanted you to know how grateful i am for the FREE knowledge...best wishes to you and yours, hope you have a great season as well

Perfect example of my land. Also need to ask yourself questions about your neighbors parcels as well. For me, to the east is 18 acres of cover. Difficult to build on, so this will likely stay this way for years. To the south, mature hardwoods and lodge pole pine. Owned by a novice hunter who walks the entire length of his property to hunt near my land. Not a well managed property. To my west, mature hardwoods. No cover, you can look through the entire parcel. Not managed, but hunted. To my north, a road and lots along the river that owners camp on. All of these things need to be considered as well when pla nning your own land strategy.

Jeff, would you ever consider the use of a creek (canoe) for access to chokepoints on the land, which would be inaccessible otherwise? Terrain and swamps do not allow machinery to access parts of my land here in Central Illinois. Great stuff! I always learn from what you are putting up. Thanks.

Oh wow that looks like my property!! So where you had the ag before the map change is the neighbors property and i have no control in what they plant for my access Now what...I did start waiting untill pre dawn or grey light to walk in like you talked about a few years ago but any other ideas?

The problem I have is the amount of deer that actually bed on my peice, I have a property almost the same layout now after watching hrs of your videos and it has improved it 10 fold BUT after a poor shot on a big buck last yr while tracking it ~1mile I learned that I have bedding within half a mile of me I just cannot compete with. Not the biggest problem in the world as there are no hunting neighbors between said bedding and me but still would love more deer bedding on my peice. Maybe video idea Jeff? How to better controll a herd when you have primo food but bedding is uncontrollable off your property id love to hear your insight
Install a Barn Owl nest box. Owls will put pressure on the rabbit and rodent population. This will reduce hosts for ticks and viruses. With less food on your property the coyote will pass through less frequently.
If you have limited time to hunt, and you’re focusing on those high percentage days like after a cold front when you get NW winds, would a person be better off developing stands to hunt at that time and not even worry about stands that you hunt on warm, SW wind, low percentage days?

Good morning Jeff! Have you ever planted buckwheat too early that after you crushed it late July, it reseeded? Is that a concern to ruin fall plots? What date is too early in say SW WI? Looks like frost may not be an issue after this week. Thanks for all you do!
Hi TJ! One thing I like to teach is that you should always plant 6 to 7 weeks prior to when you plan to ant your Fall plots in good soil areas...8 to 9 weeks in poor soil areas. Never plant before June 1st. A typical planting should take place some time during the first 3 weeks of June depending on your location.

I used many of your ideas on my own property last year. In this video it seems different from your normal D.O.C. layouts would think following your normal guidelines that entire N.W. corner would be depth and not hunted or rarely anyhow?
Hi Mark! The backside of the DOC is always hunted as more ing stands. Late October to mid Nov rut stands, opening day of gun season and some secondary rut. Even early season once or twice if they show promise. But other than that...only rut morning or all day stands, at thr backside of improved cover. Those end up being ao.e of my best stands for morning mature buck opportunities.

Hi Isaac! I spray 2-4D on my switchgrass at least 2 to 4 weeks before it germinates,, in a new planting (I have about 5 acres this year along with another 18 acres of food plots to spray). After the switch germinates I never spray it again.

Jeff, with today being May 2nd and in NW WI is it too late to apply the 24-D to my frost seeded switchgrass? Glyphosate only? or will 24-D and glyophsate be okay if I apply it soon.

Several questions. Imagine this property is 120 acres in a square/rectangle. If your home is actually located where you have the neighbor’s home, and the Big Woods and Woods area is big public land with no roads along those areas, plus you're trying to attract deer from these areas, will you spook those deer as you access the stands back there? Keep in mind ill be having an at path surrounding the periphery of the property.
How close to the road can you have a food plot if there's mature timber in between?
How close can your food plot be to your house if you do plant switchgrass in between?
120 has a lot of depth,It would depend a lot on the placement of the food
@@gregruotsala6266 Imagine the house on the property in the northwest corner, with the public land adjacent to the eastern and southern property lines. There's a road north and a lake west. I'm putting two connecting plots north to pull deer from the east (and access a stand from the road), and two plots west to pull from the south. By doing this there's a sanctuary formed in the remaining property. My concern is accessing any stand on the eastern, southeast, and southern borders for deer coming from the public lands. From what Jeff shows, walking on the periphery in the public land shouldn’t spook the deer.
Topography would play a role as well as screening, but with enough depth an cover between food an public any pressure from public should benefit you,including your pressure. I would access that side from public rather than walking the property line. Perpendicular access
@@gregruotsala6266 Thanks, makes sense. It's an easy walk through the public property to stand on the east side because the road is right there, but the south side requires about a two-mile walk around the public land from the road to get to it. During the fall I can take a boat from the lake on the west to the southern stands, but when ice starts to form in November I'll have to walk all the way around the east to get to them. Either case, if the bucks are coming from the public areas to the plots, I'm just afraid of spooking them when I travel to the stands, even when I'm on public land.
Assuming you wait for the very best couple of days per year for those stands, it sounds like it’s worth the time to go the long way around. At least until a means to hide yourself can be achieved. Good luck 👍
Doesn't the northern and western stands violate the dreaded "stand on the property line" discussions on other videos?
No...they have prrmission...AND, they are 30 to 50 yards in and facing in. 1 is near a shared easement road.
The stands I have a problem with are fencesitters sitting in the ine facing way from their own land. As long as neighborsbare sitting on their own land facing their own land with no intention of ever shooting on Mt land or walking my land...even if they shoot a deer...I have no problem with them being there. In fact most hunters push deer obto the neighbors and do more harm than good to their own hunt. You can use them 😉

I try not to harvest too many firsts before the actual season starts. Let things calm down over the summer and focus on getting those mature firsts once the fall hits. Just collect moon info for the database.👍
