    GERSHWIN Piano Concerto in F Major
    Growing up in New York City, Clayton Stevenson found musical inspiration in community programs. As he describes it, the “3rd Street Music School jump-started my music education; the Young People’s Choir taught me phrasing and voicing; the Juilliard Outreach Music Advancement Program introduced me to formal and rigorous piano training, which enabled me to get into Juilliard Pre-College; the Morningside Music Bridge validated my talent and elevated my self-confidence; and the Boy’s Club of New York exposed me to jazz; and the Lang Lang Foundation brought me to stages worldwide and transformed me from a piano student to a young artist.”
    Clayton now studies in the Harvard-NEC Dual Degree Program, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in economics at Harvard and a master’s degree in piano performance at the New England Conservatory under Wha Kyung Byun. And his accolades along the way have been bountiful: 2021 Gilmore Young Artist; 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts; Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award; Gheens Young Artist; Young Scholar of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation; and a jury discretionary award at the 2015 Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition and Festival.
    Highlights of Clayton’s burgeoning career include recitals at Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, Kissinger Sommer Festival in Bad Kissinger, BeethovenFest in Bonn, Stars and Rising Stars in Munich, Swiss Alps Classics at Switzerland, and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. He has been featured on NPR, WUOL, and WQXR, and appeared in the “GRAMMY® Salute to Classical Music” Concert at Carnegie’s Stern Auditorium.
    He has performed as a guest artist with orchestras including the Calgary Philharmonic, Chicago Sinfonietta, Louisville Symphony, Augusta Symphony, Colour of Music Festival, and Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestras. On the 69th U.N. Day, Clayton played with the International Youth Orchestra at the United Nations General Assembly Hall.

    I've been going to this concerto since I was a young man when I was on the verge of a depressive mood. Gets me right through and out of it---90% of the time. Mr. Stephenson's rendition might just pull that number up to 100% Gershwin would have loved you. 💖

    I was fortunate to hear Clayton play with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra a few days ago in their "Rhapsody in Blue" concert. He brought the house down & received two standing ovations. What a talented young man! He plays with great feeling & skill.

    Clayton’s tone has body and great projection. He’s therefore able to bring out beautifully the quality of a Steinway and the soulful sonority and passion in the works of Brahms. I’d love to see him on tour playing the Brahms concerti.

    So refreshing to actually hear the Gershwin Concerto in F in the final rounds of Van Cliburn. When I used to compete in international piano competitions in my youth and college years.. I sometimes got snooty reprimands for choosing the Concerto in F.. like it was somehow "inferior" to other typical standard concerti played in competitions aka. Prokofiev, Rach, Tchaikovsky especially. Clayton added some interesting embellishment improvs.. and to me some of them were a bit distracting but .. I have to give a bravo to Clayton for his bold choices and making me hear one of my favorite piano concerti in a fresh new light. The Concerto in F... will always be dear to my heart as I had the pleasure of performing it for Ron and Nancy Reagan back in 1985 when I was only 15.

    • @classical.pianist
      @classical.pianist Před 2 lety +31

      To make such a derisive and inaccurate statement is to eschew all he's done in the previous rounds. If Gershwin is easy, you play it. To be able to capture the American spirit in such a magical way is not something many can do. His playing was sensational, on point and well-conceived, including his embellishments. Also, the jury selected the pieces. Would not have included something "easy" by any means. Further, you fail to mention his final performance is of one of the most challenging concertos in the literature.
